Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Yes, Toni, it actually is.
https://dmnes.org/name/Tobias
It's one of those names of Hebrew origin that have been part of European languages and considered international names for many, many centuries. And according to that dictionary, the first written record of "Toby" in English, in that exact form identical to the present day one, occured in 1580. Fuller or earlier forms are known in English since before the 16th century. Toby is a colloquial form, and it likely wasn't recorded directly in preceding centuries. In addition, as seen in TDM's The Tears of Saint Lucia and elsewhere, the timeframe of TDM's rough "present" isn't strictly medieval. It's more of an early modern setting with some medieval throwbacks and a much earlier industrial revolution.
Even a female name like Tiffany (at least the English form of it) isn't some recent fad name, but goes back to the Middle Ages, originating as a rendering of Theophany. It's actually a name with pious connotations.
Speaking of medieval female names, the name Agnes (derives from "Lamb", as in Agnus Dei, "Lamb of God") was once very common throughout medieval and early modern Europe, in a large number of countries. Part of why I chose it. Nowadays, it's one of those names that are seen as a bit old-fashioned or quaint, if nice.
If we were to be completely realistic with many of the names occuring in The Dark Mod's universe, many that reflect our real world's history, cultures and religions would likely not exist in the setting's alternate history, and the same goes for all the fantasy elements. So, many of the names are a bit anachronistic anyway, though they try to capture either a certain atmosphere (thieves, the criminal underworld, grey areas between legal and illegal) or historical inspirations (names that would fit a medieval or early modern style world, even if they're not necessarily always 100 % accurate to our history).
I do have a whole section on medieval and early modern names in the Historical resources article on the wiki.

I don't think he hates "Toby", he seems to take it in stride (at least based on the backstory I have for him).
I will likely use Farrier. "Very metal !", as the "cool kids" say these days.
There'sa a wide array of occupational surnames in a large number of languages.
As for Toby's significant other, I was thinking of a certain surname for her, but haven't fully decided yet.
I could see him using "Tobias" as an alias, while wearing a disguise and meeting more "posh" people.

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
-
I played two of the April Fool's missions, they were pretty good fun.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.
-
Righto. I need to update a fair few things regarding the FM articles (including some of the older links) so I'll have plenty of work with this in the weeks ahead.

Now I know that, but only because I noticed a very small note in the main released missions overview. I'm going to fix that soon, don't worry. Once I'll be updating the latest FMs that form a series.
Also, you can tell me these things more politely. I like updating everything, but sometimes not all of the information is included clearly and properly.

I've been gone for a while, but now I'm back, have a new desktop and I want to get back to making missions and playing missions. And doing other contributions. Waiting for my reset password for the wiki, but I'll take a look at it soon. Hello, all.

I already wanted to revisit the forums this past autumn and winter, but other stuff kept me busy. Now that I've jumped over to 64-bit TDM on a brand new machine, I also want to revisit my old FM projects and complete a smaller FM.

I don't think there's a link to thedarkmod.com on forums.thedarkmod.com ...

I drew attention to this several times in the last few years. No one payed it any attention, so I just gave up.

I'm doing some major archiving and updating on our wiki and the Thief wiki. It should be completed soon enough. I would also like to ask a question: The author "Digi", who made the TDM FM "Poets and Peasants", is Digital Nightfall from TTLG.com ? Or is he a completely different author ? Thanks in advance.
-
Thank you. This is precisely why I'm asking, as I know he's been working at Arkane for years. I wanted to be sure, without a shadow of a doubt, that it was someone else, with a similar nickname. I know that DN's abbreviated nickname back in his TTLG days was "Digi", so that was the confusing element that created the whole conundrum.

I'm going dark
Feel free to reassign all my tickets and delete unfinished work (multi-light shaders, x-ray view, etc) in trunk
Special thanks to @nbohr1more and @stgatilov for putting up with my countless bugs and making great company

With my workload finally decreasing and having to stay at home far longer than I planned for this spring, I think I'll try to find more time for TDM as well. For the time being, I want to work on those audio projects.
-
I've been safe and stayed safe. Enjoying the summer and working on some TDM stuff occassionally. I'll become more livelier here on the forums in the autumn/fall.

The Wiki is currently uneditable, at least for me. See the attached image. I came back yesterday from a visit, turned on the computer, went to the wiki, and I was logged off. I thought "OK, my login simply ran out, it is not indefinite". So I logged in, as usual. However, since then, I have been unable to edit any article on the wiki. Any. Article, discussion, category, no edits can be saved and I always receive this database error. Is this a cache clearing issue, or is this yet another hiccup on part of the official servers ?

I bought the mic today, it should arrive tomorrow. I actually forgot about your request, but if I manage to get the mic working with good recording quality, I'll try to record those lines.

To anyone willing to help with a minor but useful voice acting/vocal set-related project: I'd like to upload a 3,5 MB zip to a cloud, but I don't have a dropbox account (and mediafire has become weirdly unreliable for zip downloads). Would anyone be willing to share their storage space for a few weeks ? The zip file contains the player character voice files (grunts, etc.) and I'd like to share the link with VAs I've asked for help with completing the female version of the player character voice files. Just so they could have a point of comparison with the existing voice files, to have a clear idea of what we're aiming for with the female version of that vocal set. Thank you for any help with this, it's a minor thing, but would be incredibly helpful ! Cheers...

It seems to be working well. Thank you for your help.

Thank you. Open your darkmod folder, find the pk4 file "tdm_sound_vocals01". Make a copy of it into some other folder elsewhere. Rewrite the format manually, from .pk4 to .zip. If that doesn't work, use the converter I provide in the attachment (just put it in the same folder as the copied .pk4 and click it). Once you have that vocals .pk4 copy converted to .zip format, you can upload the zip to your dropbox. Like I said, it's only some 3,5 MB, in both .pk4 and .zip format. Then send me the dropbox link, so I can share it with the VAs. Thanks a ton !

I currently don't have Internet at home and I'm rather busy, but I'll be back soon. Wishing you guys and gals all the best and I hope you're having a nice summer. :-) Wait for me, I won't be long.

I need a new voice actor for my thief. Is there somebody out there who can point me to someone or could handle the job himself?

http://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Voice_actors#Volunteer_voice_actors Some volunteers. Try Andros, if he's interested.
