  1. I think I just heard a tiny sample of TDM music during an Al Jazeera doc on North Korea just now.

It's the part where they blow up the Inter-Korean Liaison Office

Yeah I saw right after I posted that, but I was already editing in a longer post...

You should edit the time stamp into the first post.

Anyway, while that sounds like one of our sounds, it's also a pretty generic "tension" kind of sound you'd use for all kinds of purposes.

I'd first look to see if we actually ourselves got that sound from a royalty free archive, where it makes sense other organizations would also use it. Then I'd look into whether it was covergent evolution; sounds going for a "tension" effect that led to the same kind of thing.

It could have been lifted straight from TDM, but I think it's more likely it was that kind of route.

  4. Anyone here played the Forgotten City? So far, it seems really nice, but it's horribly unstable. Frequently crashes to desktop. It's annoying!

I picked it up but haven't played it yet. Its got great ratings, so somebody likes it.

  5. Sorry for my absence. I am recovering from a recent Covid infection. Dr told me I can return to work ( wfh ) Sunday. Not sure about that timetable…

Hope you feel better soon and that the dreaded long covid doesn't come along for the ride like it did for me.

  8. Having seen the new scifi stuff from bladeghost/scythwraith, want to continue the cyberpunk project. Only one problem, can't map.

    1. demagogue

Other people can map. The important part is the assets, scripts, & gameplay.

  9. I'm doing some major archiving and updating on our wiki and the Thief wiki. It should be completed soon enough. I would also like to ask a question: The author "Digi", who made the TDM FM "Poets and Peasants", is Digital Nightfall from TTLG.com ? Or is he a completely different author ? Thanks in advance.

    1. demagogue

      demagogue

Digital Nightfall, aka Dan, has been contractually barred from making FMs as long as he's been working for Arkane, so it's very unlikely to be him.

I love mapping videos, and they're so rare--even more so for our genre--so thanks for this. I look forward to them!

Speaking of which, I ran Darkmod on my new laptop with a GTX 1060, and it got 16 fps. Then I realized it was running Intel graphics by default and I had to go into the settings to have the GTX run it. Then the fps instantly shot up to 150. So watch out for that.

Epic and entirely preventable blunder on their part. At least they've fixed the root issue they should have done years ago, for what it's worth I guess.

I bought all these new games, including Prey & Kingdom Come (which are both amazing btw), but I keep coming back to play a Rogue-like with ascii graphics, Caves of Qud. It's like the Dwarf Fortress of an adventure RPG and more addicting than even the eye-candy games. I guess the depth drags you down with it.

  14. Steam link anywhere is announced. I will test if we can play TDM anywhere.

My gut instinct is that same kind of unease you feel when you go traveling and aren't sure if you turned off the stove, like what if it accidentally leaves the game running, or the game does something weird to your computer while running and you're not around to see it?

I still think I'm a little unclear. Does this require your machine to be on & online, and Steam will open the game & run it on your computer (as opposed to, e.g., the game running off some Steam server, but it knows you own that game)?

That's a good question. If it just works like a glorified external HD maybe it could work.

  18. I finally managed to put my foot in the door and switch careers. That means no more pressure of getting into game industry and steady work on models and maps for TDM! :)

Good luck with the new venture. I think creative work is more loved & appreciated in communities like ours than out there in for-profitville anyway.

  19. Lesson of the day: Spawnargs are stored in the savegame, so adding a new spawnarg, don't expect it to show up when you load up a saved game. :-)

    1. demagogue

      demagogue

You mean your re-load was reverting back before the new spawnarg was added? Yeah.

(I first thought you re-loaded a game saved after the new spawnarg was added, but the saved spanwarg wasn't there like it should have been, which made your sentence very confusing.)

  20. Didn't we have a download statistic or similar somewhere? A friend of mine asked how many people actually play tdm, so I wanted to show him some statistics. :-)

    1. demagogue

      demagogue

I don't know. The source code is publicly available, so you could look it up if you're ok at deciphering code (usually not as hard as it sounds). As for the admins, I was thinking someone just PM them periodically to ask and then post the answer. It's just a matter of a big fan taking the initiative really.

You might be able to get statistics from the respective mirrors from their admins, so you know it's at least more than X people.

  22. Weird pipedream of the day: I wish TDM had AI "arm wrestling" support

    1. demagogue

      demagogue

Not really very related, but I wish there were a "vocation" system for AI, like a conversation with conditionals, so it'd be easy to set up odd jobs or tasks for them and you could manipulate them. Not sure it'd cover that though.

Scary because so many people base their entire worldview on video snippets and rumors.

  24. Last night I had the strangest dream. I went to a museum and we played a hyper-realistic version of The Dark Mod. It was just a game though, as later they were showing us around the same place with the lights on. Eating ice cream before bed does strange things to the mind.

I played a VR game last night where you were in wheelchair set in a haunted hospital and it had a definite Dark Mod vibe. I guess I was supposed to be scared, but I was paying a lot of attention to the level design & flow. It looked pretty good for what it was.
