  1. I've been around since this mod was first announced in 2003, before Doom 3 even got released. It took 6 years until the mod was finally released, during those 6 years ambitious mod projects came and went but the Dark Mod was still around progressing. In october 18th 2009 it was finally set to be released. To be honest I was a bit disappointed at how buggy the game was initially but with patience I realized these problems will get patched and this mod will soon start fulfilling its potential. Now we're here with over 100 fan missions available this is the best free and open source "Thief" experience after ID Software released the Doom 3 engine for free and open source under the GPL license.
  2. I think that a mapper with a bit of coding experience will have an easier job doing what he needs to do. He can get into the source code of the map editing software (assuming it's open source) and modify the program to his liking so as to be able to more comfortably create his maps.
  3. I've made this into a separate post, figured that this might be an interesting topic to discuss. I changed the content of what I wrote above.
  4. I've been thinking a bit, it would be a good idea to involve the Linux community in the development of this game to improve it's compatibility with Linux. I'm a relatively new Ubuntu user and am just starting to get familiar with Linux and all of it's quirks. The Linux community supports open source software and getting them involved in developing and testing the Dark Mod on various distros will do a lot of good. I installed The Dark Mod on windows and it works just fine, I've seen a lot of people say that there's issues with getting it to run on most distros of Linux. Would be cool if it were possible to get the Dark Mod to show up on the Ubuntu software center, most of the open source games you see there are crap. This would be the first fully featured 3d game that runs on a good graphics engine there and many people would probably download it just to check it out. They might help with continuing the development of the campaign. Just an idea that I'm throwing out there, I might inspire someone to do something or it might require me to take initiative and post on an Ubuntu/Linux forum or something...
  5. Thanks for the feedback guys. I am not at all familiar with C or C++, I definitely need to learn. Programming games is a whole different world compared to web development, I have a lot of work cut out for me just in terms of trying to learn. I'm still learning web development so this won't be easy.
  6. Переводили бы вы на старославянский, было бы по интереснее. Are there any Russian communities that are dedicated to programming? I'm trying to learn to program, want to get good at modding games. I'm a complete noob at the moment.
  7. Hey everyone, First off I gotta say, WOW..JUST WOW guys. I've been following this mod back in the day when it was just announced. I was pretty excited about the idea of playing Thief in the D3 engine. Eventually it was released, I played it a bit and frankly, I was a bit disappointed because back then there were barely any maps and it was so buggy. I deleted it off my computer and forgot about it... I recently checked out a few popular game mod articles and saw this mod mentioned on every single one of them. I came back here, it's been about a decade since I checked the place out, my old account from back then is long gone and I had to register for the forum again. I'm extremely impressed that this thing is STILL going, now I see that I don't even need to install Doom 3 to play it. Ok, now on to the topic of this post. I'm looking to learn programming, although my main focus as of this moment is to become a web developer and I'm learning Ruby and PHP, I want to work on game mods. This is the reason why I was looking at game mod related articles which I mentioned in an above paragraph. Which languages are used for this mod? What kind advice can you give someone who only did a bit of Javascript, HTML and CSS in the past? I'm aware that this type of software requires a compiler as opposed languages I used that only needed an interpreter. I see that the source code is available for anyone who wants to take a look at it. Thank you,
