http://www.securityweek.com/backdoor-found-many-sony-security-cameras Isn't it funny how gaping back doors like this only exist in products where they pose a threat to the consumer, and not in products where they pose a threat to the profits of the company that designed them, e.g. the ps4? http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/12/19/ham_radio_app_bad_review/ New feature for TDM? Leave us a bad review, and your copy of the game gets disabled! Don't you just love living in an "always connected (read: on a leash)" world?

You have to admit that the customer support was paying attention with laser focus.

I could totally do that at my job, but I'd be killing your whole internet access to your house. Would never do that though, but I could.

But, dude, developers threaten revolt!!!

Orb is a pro-Vulkan partisan! Get him!!! (Or just resign yourself to using GLSL to SPIR-V ...)

Introducing something new is well and good, but yanking out support for a cross-platform standard that is used by masses of programs is an assholish thing to do.

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/05/01/intel_amt_me_vulnerability/ Remember when people were saying that this sort of stuff would happen? I do!

amazing
-
But HOW has it been patched? directly in the chip firmware or some driver in the OS..?
-
From what I understand, you'll need a new version of BIOS/UEFI. And that's if the manufacturer of your motherboard feels like providing one. (Just because Intel provides patches doesn't mean that vendors will pass them on.) And BTW: https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/05/05/intel_amt_remote_exploit/
Supposedly this only poses a serious threat to enterprise users, for now. But what scares me, is how long before we are all at risk.

Did I mention how absolutely grateful I am that TDM didn't get (and can never be) assimilated by a huge company like Microsoft, as is what happened to Minecraft?
-
Yes, I too like that The Dark Mod is not crappy, overpriced bug-ridden gruel.
-
Somewhat unrealated, but I told some woman about trying modding in TDM and then she sad that sounded what her doughter was doing in Minecraft. Ugh, this is when you remember not to talk to people about this outside the intrest-range.

That's the major advantage of FOSS of course: all the money in the world cannot take over the project (since it can just be forked for continued community development). Although for some reason FOSS games seem to be extremely rare apart from arcade stuff like Frozen Bubble.

Don't you hate it when there's a quality discussion on a forum somewhere online about something, but then two disagreeing users derail and transform it into a back-and-forth poo slinging competition at one another?

Create a new thread called "Linux vs Windows."
There, now you've got the means of bringing out the hot-headed members.

No need to get yourself infected with malwarefor that good old Windows experience of ads and nag screens.

To work around this issue, you could download Firefox first and then with Firefox, download Chrome..
Or install an addblocker on Edge before visiting the Chrome download site.

I seriously don't understand why this would make sense. Also the occasional update screen before you can use Windows. Where you must click carefully through 5 screens trying to avoid installing Office Demo or set Edge as your standard browser and all that shi...
-
@SeriousToni Regarding the screen that appears after updates, the guaranteed fix is as follows:
- Open Windows Settings -> System -> Notifications & actions
-
Uncheck these items:
- Show me the Windows welcome experience after updates and occasionally when I sign in to highlight what's new and suggested
- Suggest ways I can finish setting up my device to get the most out of Windows
As for the issue kano mentioned, I have a directory on separate drive that I keep all my installers is whenever it's time to install/reinstall Windows. Saves having to hunt down the individual installers and also avoids dealing with this sort of crap. I'm sure someone will mention Linux but I've evaluated it for many years and it's still not suitable for my purposes... yet.

Ran TDM on a 5950x in pure software rendered OpenGL mode. lol Shows you just how powerful modern CPUs actually are. Also, anyone on the dev team or any mappers need a Ryzen 3700x? I've got a spare; and since you gave me a free game, might as well give you some free hardware.

MESA LLVMPipe 22.3? Remember to NOT add dxil.dll or explicit the llvmpipe path for gallium.
Otherwise it will use the D3D12 backend (so of course it runs well)

batch file with:
SET GALLIUM_DRIVER=llvmpipe
.\TheDarkModx64.exe
remember to disable the AF

The cool part of Canonical's Snap, is that my machine can now ray-trace an entire (simple) scene faster than it takes the web browser to start!

Snap is complete garbage. Another useless me-too duplicate project by Canonical that nobody else will ever use and will hopefully go the same way as Mir once Canonical come to their senses and start using FlatPak like everybody else.

Why do we see people selling fan art and models from games online? How and why do they not get ripped a new one by publishers? I mean there are some companies who just sit on franchises and do nothing with them; they tend to be the most litigious, while more active ones who have actually made good games in the last 15 years seem to ignore it? I guess sitting around, hoarding franchises and not developing games all day means you have more time to go after fans. But still, I do feel that profiting off of someone else's work without their permission is wrong.
-
It's difficult/expensive to police, might not be competing with the actual product, and alienates fans who are giving free advertising to the works. It may be in a legal gray area if trademarks aren't used.
-
Using Nintendo as an example, they tend to go after emulators, unauthorized ports, and fan games. They aren't as likely to go after fan art. There was a recent DMCA request sent to SteamGridDB, but that was more like reworked box art, I assume used for emulator GUIs:
-
Well, there are even people who sell tshirt prints of the thief games for their own profit without legal pursue. I think doing fanart without profit is fine, but selling them for their own pocket to be printed on clothes and posters by using the fame of games other people / companies made is not right.

...so the mobile data service doesn't work. I load the browser to figure out why; It sends me to a page from the ISP. This page from the ISP fails to load because it tries to connect to fonts.googleapis.com and (as I said) there's a service problem. I block googleapis.com in /etc/hosts and *THEN* I get to see a message that the ISP is experiencing a service outage. I shouldn't need to do that!

A Dark Mod deathmatch mission would be interesting. Imagine it, you're dropped into an arena and you can spawn different characters via pressing buttons on the wall. They fight each other (and you) There were missions like this for Thief 1 and 2...

Honestly this would be a good standalone project on something like UE4. D3 had limited network support but wasn't great even in it's heyday.
-
Two important things to note are...
A: No need to code extensive NPC stealth interaction since it would be purely player based.
B: Project (light based) stealth could try and harness strict visibility based stealth. Since players will require clear line of sight, "fake darkness" really would have no place there. You really would need straight black in the darkest corners.
-
Almost done with arena map. thieves are on player side; mages, pagans and moors on elemental team - so you have 4 sides: monster, townsfolk, thieves, exotic. It crashes sometimes when you have about 20 creatures, but I guess there must be such price.

A moment of appreciation for Brutal Doom... Someone has finally managed to mix the good aspects of old and new games correctly in a way that creates something that feels new, but is not watered down. There is no two weapon limit, auto-healing, or snail-like movement. What there is, is a whole lot of blood and guts, grenades for clearing out monster infested areas, multiple functions for weapons, fast paced action, easter eggs/secrets, smarter/tougher monsters and an unlimited number of levels...
-
Brutal Doom is awesome! No way I'm playing the old Doom after that.

Are you running Android? Better watch out for malicious mp3 files (YES MP3 files). What really sucks about this is, if you're lucky to get a patch, they'll just find 4 more exploits. http://betanews.com/2015/10/01/stagefright-2-0-android/

At what point did I say it was okay to show me adverts during driver installations on a fresh install? At this point, we're usually not patched. That means if there's a jpg/png exploit, we can get infected without going through the trouble of launching a web browser.
-
hmm, which make, model of the hardware...?
-
I think AMD is doing this with all their drivers, am I right?
-
Yes, but NVIDIA does it too. I actually yank the network cord, or I switch off the modem before launching an install if I'm on an unpatched machine. I mean, we pay hundreds for the hardware and they still show us ads. Far as I can tell, the NVIDIA one fetches ads over the net, because the screen is empty if you're not connected. The AMD drivers loaded the ads from disk though.

brain-damaged bug of the day: I want to install encrypted Linux. The installer force-exits because "unsafe swap is detected". There are zero swap partitions on the disk, zilch, nada, nothing. Yet it still will not let me pass. The obvious conclusion is that the module for compressed memory is being detected as swap space, when it is no less safe than the rest of the memory in the machine. grrrrr
-
This is why as developers, you should warn the user about potential problems and not just out-right force close the program if an undesired condition is detected.
-
For anyone else who encounters this, the workaround is to pop open a terminal BEFORE launching the installer and run swapoff -a. Yes, even if there are no partitions on the disk.
