Orb is a pro-Vulkan partisan! Get him!!! (Or just resign yourself to using GLSL to SPIR-V ...)

Introducing something new is well and good, but yanking out support for a cross-platform standard that is used by masses of programs is an assholish thing to do.

  2. Why have a simple toggle switch, when an overly complicated "AI" solution will do? https://betanews.com/2018/07/25/windows-10-reboot-smarts/ There goes more wasted CPU cycles and memory.
  3. This is pretty standard for games. (saves made in an old version don't load on the a new one)
  4. Cutscenes that can't be skipped are the worst thing that ever happened to video games. Makes me long for a Super Nintendo, as FMV was impossible on that platform. They just can't fathum the idea that we play the game from the start more than once and we don't want to sit through a 5 minute video.

some cutscene's can been skipped in some game by pressing the esc key or space. depends on the game though.

  5. https://betanews.com/2018/07/13/edgedeflector-for-windows-10-no-edge/ EdgeDeflector for Windows 10 forces all links to open in the default browser, not Microsoft Edge How sad is it that people needed to make something like this? And you just know that Microsoft will break/override it with each new update...
  6. My favorite easter egg in TDM is that the revenge code of the Doom3 AI is still in there. So if you get a guard to hit another guard with an attack, for example an arrow, they will become enemies and fight each other.
  7. Probably the coolest game intro ever. (This thing shipped on a floppy disk, no fancy CD or DVD with unlimited space in comparison).
  8. Today I saw something that cracked me up. On the specs for a cheap Chinese watch, it says the product is "water proof -- but please don't press the buttons while in water". ha ha ha

      Cost-saving water-proofing. ;-D

  9. I've got 2x8GB of DDR3 desktop memory I would like to get rid of. There's no PC for me to put it in. (upgraded to Ryzen) Would like to sell it for $50. Cutting into the profits of the memory cartels by selling this so cheaply would just be a pleasant bonus.

Actually DDR3 isn't (that) expensive, it's DDR4 where the real extortion is.

  10. Sounds like a stalker's dream come true. Good thing there is Linux.
  11. Best way to dodge creating a Microsoft Account when setting up Windows (for extra spying goodness!) is to not be connected to the net during the OOBE (out of box experience). Then, it'll just make you a local account as usual.
  12. Finally found a relatively stable port of Shadow Warrior. Now I can play through those maps I missed out on. Although the source for this game was published, it was never that popular. So there are only two ports, sadly.
  13. https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/07/05/browsers_pull_stylish_but_invasive_browser_extension/ One does have to laugh at the irony of this. The Chrome browser is designed to send your browsing history to Google, Windows 10 defaults to sending it to Microsoft, but when some comparatively ant-sized company implements the feature in a browser extension, it's baaaaaaaad! Not that I'm sticking up for these guys, it's just that treatment should be equal.
  14. Get one of those printers that use ink tanks. (like Epson Ecotank) Printer is more expensive, but it comes with loads of ink, and new ink is many times cheaper than a cartridge solution, as you get MUCH more volume and there are no anti-features in the ink, since it is just a dumb plastic bottle.
  15. Last night I had the strangest dream. I went to a museum and we played a hyper-realistic version of The Dark Mod. It was just a game though, as later they were showing us around the same place with the lights on. Eating ice cream before bed does strange things to the mind.

I played a VR game last night where you were in wheelchair set in a haunted hospital and it had a definite Dark Mod vibe. I guess I was supposed to be scared, but I was paying a lot of attention to the level design & flow. It looked pretty good for what it was.

Cool. Not sure I've ever dreamt about TDM. I have dreamt about Thief, though, a few years back... :-D

  16. Yeah those cookie things are really annoying. You can thank the EU for that. But even in the US, where anything goes when it comes to corporations invading privacy for increased profits, we still see them. You would think they could filter us out by IP or something. And if you run the browser in "always use private browsing mode", you see them every time you visit the site, since it can't write a cookie acknowledging that you saw the message.
  17. https://www.theverge.com/2018/7/4/17533926/windows-ios-android-bloatware That screenshot at the top of the article says it all.
  18. You can do this on Linux. When I double click a .exe file, it switches to a "wine" account, which runs in a separate home directory, not allowed to read or write to this one. I also block "wine" from the Internet. You can also use Firejail.
  19. Windows 10 installing unwanted Store apps? https://www.ghacks.net/2018/07/02/windows-10-installing-unwanted-store-apps/ Windows Store is such a roaring success that they have to force install apps onto people who don't want them, much like what was done with Windows 10 itself! lol
  20. Damn, really makes you appreciate Blender even more, on top of it being free.
  21. Ah, okay. I didn't see the file in there. I just took the TDM installation that I did within Linux and ran it on Windows (to pit the performance of the Linux version against Windows), and was wondering what to do when it said it couldn't find a DLL. That explains why TDM Updater couldn't prompt me to install them. thanks
  22. TDM as of 2.06 seems to require some DLLs that aren't part of Windows 7. I think it is a C runtime or something. One thing that'd be great is to put a blurb about this on the download page with the correct link to the needed files, as searching for and downloading random DLLs online is a good way to get in trouble (malware).
