  1. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/11/02/windows_market_share_nov_2016/ The only reason for the "impressive rise" of Windows 10 was that Microsoft were strong arming grandmas to install it, via lack of a "no" button, mis-labeled updates that were described as fixing issues in Windows when they actually installed GWX, and then continuously installing these updates again even if the user somehow figured out that it was called KB3035583 and deleted them.
  2. We need more TDM let's play videos!
  3. Its always better to learn the smart way today, than the hard way tomorrow... If you are going to mess with luks encryption, back up the header before its too late!

The header is a single point of failure at the start of the partition, and if it gets damaged, the encrypted partition is FUBAR. So, make an extra ~1 meg partition at the end of the disk, and put a backup compressed header there.

  4. http://betanews.com/2015/08/10/users-are-unhappy-that-windows-10-automatically-sends-emails-about-child-account-activity/ Its amazing how there was barely a wimper in the press about this. It is really fucking creepy, especially being turned on by default. That just goes to show how bought off and paid for the press actually is.
  5. Aren't there supposed to be rules against conducting mass unwarranted searches like this? http://gizmodo.com/yahoo-secretly-scanned-users-emails-for-the-nsa-and-fbi-1787401845

  6. Doesn't it make you mad when the best part of the music in a series is not on the actual soundtrack album? Hint: If you are going to call it a soundtrack, all of the music featured in the material needs to be presented on said soundtrack.

      Vizima at night, Vizima outskirts.

For Witcher 3 swamp for orphans, Novigrad slums and Hindersfjall. There's a couple more but those are my favourite.

Manual sun rise needed to get those.

Well, since you know the names of the song, I guess you were able to find them otherwise :) In the opposite case I would help you to find them out, since I really missed the brzeg song from witcher (

), which weren´t included in the OST as well. I haven´t yet properly played Witcher 3, so I can´t help you with those. Although I must say that OST to W3 (and W1) is brilliant.

      Sorry for the multiplied posts.

I found them alone of course.

Witcher 2 has the most complete OST if you're interested in that.

Witcher 3 is brilliant as well in it's own way.

Though imho the story has weak points. If you want to I can send you a resume of a debate on why that is the case (in comparisson to previous games).

Theres's also great fan inspired music. Great, great frnachise. Captures something through post modernism that Ga...

  7. Somebody's been playing too much GTA...
  8. Install Linux, and only run Windows with no Internet connection. That's how I'm doing it from here on out, now that mega-mystery patches are coming to Windows 7 and 8.1. Instead of providing you individual patches to choose from and install, from now on, there will be just one megapatch for the month with all the little patches rolled in. And you just know it won't be long before Microsoft decides to be naughty again, as if labeling GWX as fixing issues in Windows, and slipping banner ads into an Internet Explorer security update weren't naughty enough before.
  9. I wonder how much longer before it gets to a point in games when: "You have reached the end of level 4. Please purchase the Boss DLC to fight the boss for this level."
  10. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/09/22/windows_10_backlash_begins_which_calls_for_upgrade_compensation/ "Choice" my ass. That GWX thing continuously pestered people to upgrade and it was obfiscated to ensure that it would be difficult for non-experienced users to remove. Even the description in Windows Update was obfuscated, in order to slip it past those of us who *do* read them. This was on top of there not being a "no thanks" button up until the very last minute, when this scheme started costing Microsoft $$$ and getting them in trouble. It would be like me calling a girl every day and asking her if she will go out with me. If she says no, I call again tomorrow. That's not a choice, that's harassment.
  11. This weekend I played through Kingpin: Life of Crime. They give the player nothing but a short pipe at the beginning of the game, and the player starts in an area with lots of heavily armed hostile NPCs blocking either path. You must sneak past them and search the areas thoroughly to get some decent equipment to progress through the game. But later on, it gets quite easy, because ammo is handed out like candy. The first level is actually the hardest part of the game. Something like this would never fly today in the games industry. There is a slight bit of stealth in the game, but enemies seem to have godlike reaction times. This means that if you sneak up on an enemy NPC and attack while their back is turned, they turn around and retaliate immediately, which is kind of unfair. They also rarely miss. But by far, the coolest aspect of this game is the friendly NPCs. They will follow the player *anywhere*, such as up/down ladders, jumping across gaps, up and down elevators, and so fourth. The friendly AI in this game even puts Half-Life to shame.
  12. The soundtrack in this game was well done.
  13. I still remember the fun of trying to commit suicide in Thief 1. There was a bug where running and jumping would net you increasing speed, if you did it correctly. So you could run faster than the Quake guy once you mastered it. And in Thief 1, running into things at a high enough velocity would cause damage. So I would try and run/jump down the long halls in "The Sword" to try to smack into the wall as fast as I could and kill myself. Then there was "NPC jumping", where leaning into another character and jumping would sometimes send you way up into the air and back twenty feet. You could use this one to get places you're not supposed to go. Then there was this funny bit. All of these are fixed in T2, and the fan-made patch for T1, though.
  14. I once saw this Youtube video by a German Thief fan who showed a bug in the game where the archers would shoot themselves. At least, I think they were speaking German. It was one of the funniest things I ever saw. The player would strafe around the guard, then the guard would draw the arrow, damage himself, say something that sounded funny, and repeat the above. This was in the old Thief games, and I have no idea how to trigger it. (Maybe its an exclusive bug in the German version?) I tried to find the video again, but I couldn't.
  15. Got an email from my (now former) ISP, informing me that the $25, 1.5mb/s Internet service will go up to $35, starting in October. Yeah, that's right, $35 for wired Internet service that can't even cope with a 720p stream. Capitalism is wonderful.

      Bikerdude

Time to change ISP if your able to then, even $25 for a 1.5mb connection is taking the royal piss!

    3. kano

      kano

Call most any ISP over here and they'll want at least $20 for 1.5mb/s service. We have a saying for American Internet; "The only thing that goes up is the price!" Maybe its because spying on everyone is so expensive, or maybe they just don't want to overload room 641A. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Room_641A

  16. In honour of this: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/09/07/tesla_model_s_crash_electrical_hazard_fire_brigade_netherlands/ I just can't help but post this:
  17. I felt like making a Windows 10 wallpaper, in the style of the "Scroogled" campaign from Microsoft, so here it is! For those that don't know what I'm talking about: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/08/06/microsoft_vacates_moral_high_ground_for_the_data_slurpers_cesspit/
  18. Water is wet, the sky is blue. Those apps you uninstalled from Windows 10 are coming back, to visit you! http://betanews.com/2016/08/19/unwanted-windows-10-apps-return/ The bit about Microsoft understanding that "no" means "NO" is particularly funny, after the monthly versions of KB3035583 that would get installed automatically if you uninstalled it before and selected NOT TO SHOW THAT UPDATE AGAIN.
  19. What's interesting about this video is how they all produce a sound at an identical pitch/tone. I guess that's because of the fact that AC runs at 60 cycles per second. It makes me wonder if it would sound that way if this happened in another country with different electrical standards. ... and wow! That explosion at 1:06 looks straight out of GTA
  20. After ordering one of these, I feel like an idiot. Look at what a fucking job it is just to change the battery! Its so hard to find a decent phone. It was either this or the Note 4. Note 5 is junk because of no expansion slot. Note 4 would be good because of easily changed battery, but since its older, its got less memory and will probably be obsolete faster than this Zenfone (which was cheaper).
  21. brain-damaged bug of the day: I want to install encrypted Linux. The installer force-exits because "unsafe swap is detected". There are zero swap partitions on the disk, zilch, nada, nothing. Yet it still will not let me pass. The obvious conclusion is that the module for compressed memory is being detected as swap space, when it is no less safe than the rest of the memory in the machine. grrrrr

    1. kano

      kano

This is why as developers, you should warn the user about potential problems and not just out-right force close the program if an undesired condition is detected.

    2. kano

      kano

For anyone else who encounters this, the workaround is to pop open a terminal BEFORE launching the installer and run swapoff -a. Yes, even if there are no partitions on the disk.

  22. Score! I found a i7 2670m laptop with 8gb and a Radeon 6730m at a thrift shop for $100... It features 2 500GB HDDs, one of which was dying. That was the one with the Windows install. So I of course substituted it with a 128 GB SSD. At first I thought the hinges were breaking, but it was just a loose screw.

  23. http://www.ghacks.net/2016/07/28/microsoft-removes-policies-windows-10-pro/ And so, the screws begin to tighten, ever-so-slowly.
  24. Give Cyanogenmod a try. Its a community developed and maintained version of Android. I have an ancient 4-year-old phone that supports CM and its great. To think, I was going to chuck this thing! It was stuck on version 4.1 of Android with loads of crapware on it that I couldn't delete. CM provides a very clean image, and Google integration is optional. You can use fdroid.org for apps anonymously, and (if the device is officially supported (like this one is) it gets regular updates to fix threats (unlike 90% of Android phones that are abandoned after 16 months to sell you the new model). Its really great getting the OS from people who didn't sell me the hardware, because they have no incentive to stab me in the back by abandoning the device pre-maturely. I also stuck a 128 GB memory card in this thing, (yes, 128 GB in a phone from 2012!). If you're interested in a device, check out the Zenfone 2 Laser. I think it is officially supported by CM, and it is a hell of a lot more powerful than this old thing. EDIT: There's another great feature in CM to share. When listening to music with the screen off, if you press the volume buttons down for half a second, it will advance to the next or previous track. This is something that most vanilla ROMs don't do, and its so much more convenient than pulling out the phone, turning on the screen, and then switching tracks manually.
