  1. For anyone who needs a good chuckle... http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/02/02/delete_efivars_linux/ Ouch... that's gotta hurt!

This whole UEFI idea is utterly PoS. I'm an old-school BIOS fan.

Tell me about it. Allowing software running in the OS to screw with firmware is a bad idea as far as security goes. To mess with firmware, you should need to boot into a utility in the existing firmware. Of course, if you're with a spy agency, such a feature is a dream-come-true if you want to permanently root target computers.

  2. I can't believe somebody made this. EDIT: They even made a slogan for this guy; "Can't dodge the rodge!" I was actually expecting people to make jokes about "Mr. Rodger's Neighborhood".
  3. Believe it or not, this isn't me... I swear! http://videochart.net/video/1x734.3939778271dcafb0cc564790b4b8 As far as the updates go, I would not be at all surprised if Microsoft changes it to an important update right at the end of the free upgrade offer.
  4. http://betanews.com/2016/01/28/brace-yourself-for-a-windows-10-crapware-explosion-pre-installing-tripadvisor-is-just-the-start/ Enjoying the show... Also: http://betanews.com/2016/01/22/developer-windows-store-is-a-disaster/ This is actually a good thing. I mean, we want this thing to fail. I mean, if it gets popular, it would just be a question of how long before software was exclusively offered in this manor, making it significantly more difficult to run in Wine or on older versions of Windows. We all saw what Microsoft tried to pull with the XBox One.
  5. Well I went ahead and upgraded. I did it for the following reasons. *I rarely run Windows, except for when I want to run programs I can't run on Linux. *I will eventually be forced to use it when people stop writing software for 7. *The upgrade was free and as someone who would rather support an alcoholic on the street than give Microsoft another dime (and I hate alcohol!), I decided it was best to upgrade while its free. *I'm really not worried about them spying on me, because I use btrfs and I know that it will be a cold day in hell before Microsoft supports that. As part of the upgrade though, I needed to install Windows 7 on a laptop. I typed the product key and it told me it was blocked, so I got to spend an hour on the tele arguing with them to get it to activate. At one point they told me I would need to contact the laptop manufacturer, which was when I threatened to switch to Google products. That got the ball moving. Absolutely zero of the other products I use put me through shit like this, which is why I will never give these ass holes another dime.
  6. Yes, it certainly does. Watch out for PulseAudio though, it will give you trouble with game sounds, increasing latency and what not. Every time I do a Linux install, Pulseaudio is the first package that gets nuked. TDM runs on 64-bit, too. BTW, I want to print out and frame this article. http://betanews.com/2016/01/18/disable-those-get-windows-10-pop-ups-with-gwx-stopper/ Expect a patch from Microsoft to turn GWX back on next week... ha ha ha ha
  7. Something amazing happened. I rooted a 4-year-old droid, unlocked the bootloader, and installed Cyanogenmod. This thing NEVER got a single OS update before, but guess what? I'm getting updates now!!!

Prior to this, it was on 4.1, now its on 5.1. (this is several versions newer and better) Its almost like the community cares more about updating products than the manufacturer, and all the attempts to lock things down are to force you to get a new one prematurely.

    2. Bikerdude

      Bikerdude

Yeah Cyanogenmod is a cool OS, if you want to go complete google free this is one way to do that.

CM is also great for older devices because there's no crapware. A lot of Android devices come with crapware, but its worse than it ever was on Windows because you can't easily get rid of the crapware on Android like you can on Windows.

  8. Not to mention all of the publishers who would love to sell you a new copy of games you already paid for.
  9. This was a particularly well executed move. First, secure boot was introduced. When we all feared that it would be used to lock out competitors, the pro-Microsoft people like Ed Bot were shouting that there was nothing to worry about, because the certification specification for Windows 8 (at the time) guaranteed that there would be an off switch. Now here we are at Windows 10, and the requirement for an "off switch" disappears. This mysteriously happens after everyone is finished criticizing secure boot in the media, because its old news by this point. I would also like to add something to the list of reasons not to upgrade. http://www.geek.com/games/windows-10-doesnt-run-games-with-securom-and-safedisc-drm-1631383/
  10. IMO Microsoft got nasty when they disguised the update that installs GWX as a run-of-the-mill bug-fix patch, to slide it by consumers. https://forum.eset.com/uploads/post-3952-0-96878900-1428318020.png Also, let us not forget that Microsoft has a history of abusing users, like this blast from the past. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/why-cant-i-change-my-desktop-background I'm glad there's ChromeOS and Android now, because they prevent MS from pulling stunts like this.
  11. Is it just me, or is the concept of an anti-virus program that (due to a bug) classifies *itself* as a threat and then messes up the machine extremely funny?

  12. Holy moly, when will there be a lawsuit? http://news.softpedia.com/news/microsoft-trying-to-re-enable-windows-10-upgrade-on-windows-7-8-1-twice-a-day-498707.shtml I'm as eagerly awaiting a lawsuit as I am enjoying watching this mess unfold.
  13. Such well written and mysterious music... This one should be played by an orchestra... This one's great too. Something's wrong with the drums in this render though.
  14. Here's some laughs for the day: http://www.zdnet.com/article/revealed-the-crucial-detail-that-windows-10-privacy-critics-are-missing/ TLDR: You can't completely turn it off, nor can you actually inspect what data is being collected, but you shouldn't worry, because Microsoft would never do anything sneeky, underhanded, or against the wishes of the end user. https://forum.eset.com/uploads/post-3952-0-96878900-1428318020.png (this one's the update that nags you to upgrade to Windows 10, described as a bug-fix patch in order to trick/slip past you.) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Genuine_Advantage http://www.afterdawn.com/news/article.cfm/2008/05/18/nbc_triggered_vista_broadcast_flag Everyone else that provides free products collects data about you and tracks you. We can't have a pro-Microsoft article without bringing out the Google and Facebook Boogiemen. You should be cool with still being required to pay Microsoft $100 when you build a new computer to be subject to this stuff without the gracefulness of an "off" switch, though. All this data collection is being done to make the product better for you, the end user. You guys asked for that Metro interface with those giant buttons on your large PC monitors. You asked for obvious functionality when you're using a mouse, like clicking on the top of the screen and dragging to the bottom to close a Window, or clicking and dragging in from the right to open a menu, when on-screen buttons made things infinitely more friendly for beginners and didn't require any training for existing users who upgrade. You also asked for Media Center to be ripped out, so you get the privilege of paying for something else that you used to get free with Windows. You asked for advertising to be built into the OS. (http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/turn-off-the-get-office-notifications-in-windows-10/) Its totally not spying if I were to sit outside and log what you do and when, whether you like it or not. (you can't turn this stuff completely OFF in Windows 10) "He went to the fridge twice in the last two hours, and used the bathroom three times so far today. Now he's eating Cheet-o's and playing Unreal Tournament. All data that is collected is anonymous, though Microsoft does COLLECT A DEVICE ID as stated in the article and they obviously get an IP address too. Is that device ID a GUID? Funny how the article doesn't say. There were also several times in the past where collected "anonymous" data turned out to not be so anonymous after all. (AOL anyone?)
  15. Well, I just checked and my PS4 is on firmware 1.75. This means the exploit that they used should work on mine (they were on 1.76). Far as I understand though, the exploit they used was done in a web browser. When I try to launch the web browser on mine, it wants me to sign up for PSN *before I'm allowed to even launch the browser*. This is quite creepy and I plan to strictly use the PS4 in offline mode, never going online. Now, I wonder how to go about booting Linux... I can't wait 'till there's a jpeg exploit or something like that, where you can boot it just by loading a specially crafted photo. (Other consoles were hacked in that manor before.)
  16. http://betanews.com/2016/01/04/why-is-microsoft-monitoring-how-long-you-use-windows-10/ "Stop questioning things, citizen. Do as you're told, and pick up that can!"
  17. TDM... running on a PS4... sooner than you would expect? Congrats to the people involved with this project!

I personally would like to see the PS4 become a hybrid console/compact gaming PC, so that's why I'm excited about this.

  18. http://betanews.com/2015/12/29/microsoft-explains-why-its-pushing-windows-10-so-aggressively-spoiler-its-to-keep-you-safe/ Smell that? That's the smell of desperation, boys and girls. For the record, "What would it take for Kano to switch to Win10?" Either drop the price for home users of the software that build PCs to zero since it now contains adware and some would also argue spyware, or remove these controversial features and charge a fair amount for the software. $100 per PC is not fair when I can get a complete tablet for that price. If you think I'm going to pay $100 for a product that behaves how Windows 10 currently does, "you're out of your flippin' mind." Also, for the love of god Microsoft, implement pinch-to-zoom functionality for tablet users. Android and IOS support it, and if you expect people to *pay* for the "jack-of-all trades" operating system that Windows 10 is supposed to be, you damn well better support it too.
  19. What kind of fucked up world do we live in where someone explains what's wrong with this, *demonstrates* all of the underhanded and shady behavior that is going on behind the scenes, and yet finishes it up by calling it a great product once you work around all of that stuff? Exactly how much abuse will these people tolerate? How far does Microsoft need to go before they decide enough is enough? It blows my mind that people would pay a hundred bucks to be subjected to this.
  20. This tablet just started showing me notifications to "get office", complete with sounds to grab my attention. If I wanted to be subject to advertisements, I would either turn on the fucking TV or switch off my ad blocker. For anybody who does not believe me, http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/turn-off-the-get-office-notifications-in-windows-10/ I stand by what I said before about wishing there was a way to go back in time and punch myself before I decided to get a Windows tablet. It was the biggest mistake I made in a long time. "What the *hell* was I thinking? I feel sorry for the people who will pay a hundred bucks for this software and then get to switch off stuff like this. --There's NO excuse for this--
  21. *clap clap clap* Sometimes you've just got to tell it like it is. http://www.zdnet.com/article/2015-the-year-windows-os-x-and-ios-became-naggy-and-annoying/
  22. Heads up, boys and girls! http://www.ghacks.net/2015/12/07/microsoft-continues-aggressive-upgrade-strategy-for-windows-7-and-8-1-systems/
  23. There are articles saying that the adoption of Windows 10 is slowing. I wonder if its time for another "accident" like this? http://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/microsoft-accidentally-installs-windows-10-on-some-systems/
  24. ...that moment when you find a random AC adapter. You do not know what its for, but you know that if you throw it away, you'll figure out what it was supposed to be used on, a day later.

haha same here - I have a full drawer of technical stuff of which I don't remember its purpose xD

  25. At what point did I say it was okay to show me adverts during driver installations on a fresh install? At this point, we're usually not patched. That means if there's a jpg/png exploit, we can get infected without going through the trouble of launching a web browser.

    1. Bikerdude

      Bikerdude

hmm, which make, model of the hardware...?

    2. SeriousToni

I think AMD is doing this with all their drivers, am I right?

    3. kano

      kano

Yes, but NVIDIA does it too. I actually yank the network cord, or I switch off the modem before launching an install if I'm on an unpatched machine. I mean, we pay hundreds for the hardware and they still show us ads. Far as I can tell, the NVIDIA one fetches ads over the net, because the screen is empty if you're not connected. The AMD drivers loaded the ads from disk though.
