I have no doubt a good few downloads have been for teh bewbies, but until Creative Assembly releases a Total War: Everything, well, we just have to make do.

SSDs give enormous boost in performance, but I don't see them replacing HDDs for quite some time. There's just way too much data everywhere. Heh, my 1st PC, PC XT with 10MB drive. I wanted a tower PC so I turned it on its side. Looked way cool until our cat jumped on it, crashing it off the table... No more XT :(

    3. jaxa

      jaxa

SSD prices have stopped dropping due to challenges w/ shrinking the memory. Memristors, crossbar ReRAM or a similar tech could take over where NAND leaves off with superior characteristics.

  2. I think I just heard a tiny sample of TDM music during an Al Jazeera doc on North Korea just now.

It's the part where they blow up the Inter-Korean Liaison Office

That has got to be from a royalty free archive, it would make more sense for the TDM music to have used such sounds rather than someone who's a TDM fan at Al Jazeera taking audio from a track.

On the other hand if you think it'll help the mod, you can always link it on the front page for publicity! :)

I bet the aljazeera people visiting this website have a user agent string containing the word "press",as in the word "press" imprinted on journalist safety vest. /s /jk

  3. I'll take TDM for $108, Trebeck. Minimum reaction time, new vocal sets, hundreds of new sounds, no launcher restart, new AI model, ability to minimize window.

i'm not sure how i feel about AI being knocked out rather than killed by a 200lb crate being dumped on them from 20 feet.

      jaxa

Gotta be better than the current "Hey!" or whatever

    4. Tels

      Tels

The "no kill when crate drops on them from above" is to avoid the unf. situation that if you drop anything on them, they might die and on Expert this would lead to the player never trying to knock them out out of fear of killing them accidentily.

Also a valid point of view. Unfortunately very few games and game companies try to overcome this dichotomy.

i always thought it was worse for console owners, not only have they got to pay for games and dlc's but they also have to pay a monthly subscription to play and get access to the dlc's they've already paid for.

Xarg, doing CUDA on one card while doing other stuff on another is no problem. No need for DX12 here.

    3. Xarg

      Xarg

Fair enough, I haven't touched CUDA, nor owned an NVidia GPU since the 8600gt, the only possibility this GPU linking offers me that'd I'd be interested in is the PhysX stuff. Didn't AMD make some alternative version of PhysX for their platform?

    4. STiFU

      STiFU

I was interested in that as well, so I googled and found this:

However, much more important is that I also found, that nvidia prevents PhysX-computation if a card from another manufacturer is installed. (Only have a German publication for that)

Yeah I saw that. Rather than engage in the poo-flinging that goes on on "Windows vs Linux" forums, I would love to know exactly why it runs faster. Is it the drivers? The game itsself? The kernel?

    3. stumpy

      stumpy

its due to directx being crap. also reading the link about win8 being awful for pc's in general maybe the reason behind the shift to linux

    4. lost_soul

      lost_soul

But there are just SOOO many factors to consider. 3D desktop enabled? Number of processes running in the background? etc. I think it would be good if they ran this test on a system average Joe is likely to use and see how much boost it still gets them.

      jaxa

Nope. But it seems to work fine, and it should be a little over 3x the performance of the 5700G's Vega 8.

Rembrandt is expected to double graphics performance over Cezanne. It's possible that the Phoenix iGPU after that could reach desktop GTX 970 performance.

    3. duzenko

      duzenko

      I have a 2011 6850 and it's still faster than 2021 vega 6

OTOH the IGP is sharing 20W thermals with the CPU, so I'm saving a coffee on every electricity bill LOL

    4. jaxa

      jaxa

Just going by the charts on TechPowerUp, Vega 8 (Cezanne) should be slightly faster than that 6850. Then in a few months, RDNA2 12 CU (Rembrandt) should double Vega 8 perf, although I think it might be more like a 115% improvement. That APU would be the first one using DDR5 memory which contributes to the improvement. From then on, it's speculation. I would hope to see RDNA3 and an increase to 16 CUs in Phoenix given it would be on TSMC 5nm, and then it beats me what Strix Point would have, other than RDNA4.

The end result is that in less than 5 years, laptop/desktop APUs are usable at 1440p or even 4K. Intel is not standing still either, and could be tripling/quadrupling the size of their iGPUs (e.g. 320 execution units instead of 80-96).

I was just shopping for a new laptop and was down to 2 choices, and the one I picked had an Intel Core i3, which beats the other's AMD A8-3500M.

    3. 7upMan

      7upMan

Unless your Intel laptop has a decent (ededicated) GPU built in, this might not have been the wisest choice. While the AMD's CPU part may be inferior to the i3, the APU's GPU part is *way* superior.

    4. demagogue

      demagogue

It has an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 GPU. I think that counts as dedicated & decent. I mostly play just older games anyway, and the better CPU makes me happier for like making music, audio & video editing, etc.

The author did attempt a TDM mission but found the process too complex compared to Rune (which he is familiar with). As far as I'm concerned, this amounts to free promotion because any time someone sees a new Thief mod, they search for other Thief mods. TDM is the top result in Google search for "Thief Mod".

Replace "Hitman" with "Thief" and this quote still rings true: ""The development team for Thief really struggled in this regard. They implemented a vast amount of 'elements for the mass' instead of for the core fans, as a way to try getting as many new players possible. It was a strategy to gain mass appeal. However, what makes the Thief series good is its appeal to core gamers, and many fans felt the lack of focus in that regard"

    3. stumpy
