  1. Something tells me it was either more or exactly that complicated.
  2. Desura, yet another Steam wannabe. Except even Steam plays fair with The Dark Mod. Most Desura users read ModDB news, right? And Desura's popularity as a platform is how much? I don't think there's a problem, until such time that they roll ModDB and IndieDB right into Desura (in fact I'm pretty sure some/all IndieDB content is mirrored on ModDB). They can bugger off with their TOS though:
  3. Isn't there an even older device than Pandora that ran Dosbox, allowing you to play DOS games like Doom?

  7. Windows Live apps = Windows Live Essentials 2011. The laptop I bought came with the usual bloatware (I wasn't installing fresh Windows from scratch). But during the Win setup dialogs that come up, where you choose the time zone, name, etc., it came up with something like two licenses and two options on one screen, one for Windows 7 and one for Bing Bar. I had to agree to both of them to proceed. I can't find any information on it so I'm either wrong and it's a manufacturer thing or it's part of Service Pack 1. Windows 7: Oct 22, 2009 Bing Bar: Apr 9, 2010 ? Windows 7 Service Pack 1: Feb 9, 2011 Regardless, I don't care all that much. Feel free to stamp out any potential misinformation in this post.
  8. I heard the download.com thing was just the result of people uploading installers with the usual bloatware like Google Toolbar and the checkbox pre-checked. So CNET is impregnating virgin downloads with a bloatware wrapper, checkboxes checked by default, etc. Sure, both the additional bloat and the opt-out checkbox suck, but it's nothing new. When you install a piece of freeware, or any software for that matter, you read the menu options carefully. Of course one of download.com's "features" is that they supposedly make sure downloads are spyware clean. But nowadays spyware is almost ideological. BonzoBuddy is clearly spyware, but what about bundled Google Chrome/Toolbar? It checks in with the server constantly with some of your information in order to bolster ad relevance/revenue. The solution here is clearly to never use download.com. Why go to download.com when you can go straight to VLC, Firefox, etc. Even the dumbest users can usually enter in the name of the software, hit "i'm feeling lucky" and get the correct one due to pagerank. @nb: Windows Live does come bundled with the OS. It's a suite of shitty applications. Also Windows 7 installation / first startup doesn't allow you to use it without installing the "Bing Bar" (you have to uninstall it yourself, which is not difficult). Bing used to be called "Windows Live" until some Microsoft marketer struck pyrite.
  9. It was probably during one of the times this thread got chopped up and tossed out into other forums.
  10. Loose bricks are in a few missions. I'd like slashable tapestries and other things myself, although it might be hard to make it look convincing.
  11. Would it be possible to decompile missions and manually convert strings from static to dynamic convention?
  12. More like the defining appearance. I haven't seen it any missions I've played. (didn't play Siege Shop yet, waiting for v2 now for freshness)

  17. Hmm so was "After Dark" not a Thief 2 mission? Because Winter Harvest is essentially "After Dark lite". I didn't realize that Shadowhide had created both missions until I asked him during beta testing. As poorly as this map might look calling it "not a TDM mission" or a "mod of a mod" is going too far. None of the plot objectives in this mission is particularly radical, anybody could do the same scripting (according to SH, heh). The remainder of the problems are essentially these: 1. No indication that the friendlies near your starting point (and rest of Part 1) can be approached, although the objectives do mention "don't kill any friendlies". This and the size of the map could lead to confusion over where to go (you're zigzagging across the map). But the convos provide clues on what to do and I doubt anymore than 10 minutes is wasted backtracking. This ain't King's Story. 2. Light on the stealth, although stealth does occur in Part 2. For Part 1 maybe some zombies could be woven in. I expected one in the dilapidated house anyway. 3. Story/end goal is cliched. Sure, but there are other TDM missions that basically have an obligatory plot, and a few that don't even have that much loot. At least this one had conversations interspersed and some interesting graphics. An improvement might to be to hide some "Easter Egg" loot, esp. in Part 1, and then add an optional loot objective "Try to find X00 loot". So a v3 of this could easily bring this mission up to more peoples' "standards". But I'd rather see Shadowhide work on his next mission anyway.
  18. Well that leaves my original question. If the author coughs up a ZIP, you could just rename it to PK4 and upload it?
  19. I thought you could just select a ZIP file and rename it as a PK4, and that TDM added support for missions in ZIPs???
