To me, horror is not about gore and violence, that's why I find most of the horror movies boring, especially american ones. They tend to rely on that annoying "string-tension" sounds while depicting some supposedly brutal death and then switching to a random episode that looks like a prelude to porn movie. It's ridiculous. I find that japanese horror focuses more on psychological aspects that constantly messes with you. If you hadn't, you should play the first four games in the Silent Hill series. They're amazing and they really depict psychological horror aspects well.
