just got a call from the tech support scammers. I acted as if I was doing what they wanted, but I occasionally acted pissed because "my computer spontaneously turned off". Then they waited with me as I "started it" again.

O_O That's a very honorable thought
-
Perhaps, but it's drops in an ocean.. there's a vast sea of gullible and ignorant people who "don't have time for that nerd shit", and they'll keep getting suckered for their $500 (or equivalent in bitcoin, I've seen that too). Until the average user's computer literacy vastly improves, this won't go away. By all means, feel good that you've spared one grandmother, maybe 2, each time you screw the scammer around, but tomorrow's another day and there are more grandmothers and illiterates to scam.
-
I never heard of those before. In Brazil we have a lot of kidnap call scam. Most of these calls come from jails (yeah, they have cellphones in there). My dad got one of these, the man told him they had me and my car, but I don't have a car so he knew it was a scam immediately (they even had someone in the back yelling 'help me! help me dad'. Can you imagine what a call like this does to a person? this people should be put to jail! oh wait...

We're still being ignored... Is there some particular reason for this? http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTM0NTE

He also ignored the amazing Hexen mod which is still in development and actually released a new teaser very recently:
-
they only seem to be interested in ioquake3 projects and sources on github

Apparently we're on Freegamer, btw. Some people DO care, after all.

Got banned from a game server for "using aimbot/wallhack", even though I NEVER have. It underscores the fact these anti-cheat systems are worthless.

The coolest recent MP games IMO have been Left 4 Dead (that name always reminds me of Baddcog's FM lol) &
NeoTokyo (HL2
mod), which is like a cyberpunk counterstrike that sadly doesn't have players anymore. I like MP IL-2 too. Yeah they're fun, just this one thing that can be annoying.
-
Also of course if you haven't played T2 FMs coop style you really ought to. It really adds to an FM to play it with a friend.
-
but against bots, you never get the thrill of chasing them all the way across the level while they frantically try to get away from you. I've actually seen some servers where "chasing" is against the rules.
-
Ever find a player in an online game where the two of you cooperate and (as a result) win every SINGLE time? You stick around and help them build a base, then the two of you gang up on the enemy, box them in, and finish them. This is unusual for public games; usually people just do their personal thing even when it is a team game

Yep. It used to be _very_ popular. Some people forked it and are making a version with a new engine/better graphics. It will be interesting to see what else they change, because I do not believe you can take an old game, just improve graphics, and expect it to return to its former popularity. Game play/levels must be changed to make the experience new again... like TDM did.
-
I also recommended TDM to somebody else while playing Tremulous. They said they were going to check it out. I told them about how many missions there are.
-
I dont know this Tremulous, but it looks very similar to Natural selection (2), which you maybe should try out.

Its funny how the AI in most games are idiots when it comes to throwing grenades. They frequently blow themselves up instead of the target. Today in Deus Ex though, I was impressed when an AI chucked a LAM right into my hiding position.

Haha!
-
Clear Sky on Master difficulty meant bandit pack = roving grenade launcher squad. Constant accurate grenade spam.
-
When playing CS 1.6 against ZBot's, I always forbid them to use grenades. Can't count how often I was killed by my own teammates who "thought" it would be a good idea to throw some he-grenades at the starting point 8-|

How to hard-lock a Linux box: step 1. Insert a scratched or dirty CD. Step 2, try to advance through songs. We have made 0 progress since the early 90s. Even the mouse pointer stops moving and you can't switch to a console!

Thank god no body uses CDs anymore

I'm surprised the technology doesn't seem to really have improved much from DVD to Bluray, other than raw storage space, given how insistent some organisations have been on staying purely in the physical realm. Download speeds are a solid argument against using physical media, but having the option to back your downloads up is important too
-
Well, they did make an optical drive that has multiple lasers and multiple read-assemblies. This gives a greater read rate, while not spinning the disk so fast that it explodes from the force. I wonder if anybody has tried making a hard drive with two read-arms, one on each side. This would give faster performance without spinning the disk faster too.

Holy crap batman! Its like some sort of spam-bomb went off in the off-topic forum... Why isn't there a restriction on the number of topics you can create as a new user?

x-girlfriend called me FIVE times yesterday, and already once this morning (8AM). She wants to get back together. I have lost track of how many times she has changed her mind in the past. She's older than I am, and yet she still hasn't figured out that this whole thing is a joke.

Life is too short, but if the shit you break up over, and over again is trivial
-
You've gotta be joking. Tonight she wrote me and said "that's fine, but is it okay if I tell people we're together?" This is kinda sad. I don't really care what she does, but it is sad... If you like somebody that much, why the hell do you break up with them so many times, or is it that you have to have a boyfriend to "fit in" or "feel important"?

If you have nothing else ...

What to do with an 8 *megabyte* SD card? (besides laugh at it)

I think you're 3 orders of magnitude off Biker.
-
My fully installed T1/2/3 folders are just over 9GB, so compressed they would fit on said card.
-
its megabytes not gigabytes. unless you've invented 1125x compression!

Well, I stuck another fan in the side of the case and it brought the card down by 10 C. It idles at 60 now. Guess all we can do is try to keep it cool.

I put mine 8800 in the oven a few months ago. Still runs smoothly
-
heh, well done that man :-D

Lost_soul introduces The Dark Drive: A USB flash drive with both TDM and a bootable installation of Linux on it. Even if the hard drive dies in the PC, you can still play TDM!

32 GB is as low as $8 though (US Black Friday)
-
Yeah, but some of the lowest-end drives can be extremely slow. This is a problem if you're gonna run an entire session off of them. I can't post an "iso" of this for a wide variety of reasons, sorry... but anybody can do a Lubuntu install to a flash drive, install their video drivers, and load up TDM.
-
That's a well known problem with a known solution: you spend more money. You can have an anybrand 32 GB USB 2.0 stick for $8, or you can get something like Sandisk Extreme for about $1/GB with high sequential and random speeds.
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/usb-3.0-thumb-drive-review,3477.html
Model in review is 64 GB, 16 and 32 GB versions are available on Newegg.

TDM + Intel 965 mobile graphics = 3 FPS! I knew I wasn't going to get away with it...

I read a story recently where someone did exactly that. It's not a pretty setup but...

lol nice

Or you can use an ExpressCard slot (if your laptop has one): http://www.techradar.com/news/computing-components/graphics-cards/how-to-make-an-external-laptop-graphics-adaptor-915616#null

Pretty sad when a 3.5 GHz CPU loses to a 3.3 GHz CPU in a race... especially when the 3.5 GHZ CPU is a couple years newer! The older chip rendered a scene in 3:05 and the newer one took 3:55!
- Show previous comments 6 more
-
Didnt I read somewhere you can offload Blender cycles to the GPU..?
-
Yep, but there are restrictions. The entire scene must fit in VRAM, and if you render hair with the GPU, it is very slow.

Buy an i5 next time

Started cleaning another Vista machine, expired AV, still using IE7, no updates being installed, Acrobat 7, p2p software. This is how malware spreads... The new virus scanner started showing threats before I even began scanning. lol

SeriousToni, you don't know what the problem is? People click online ads... on pornsites... on internet explorer...

There must be a way we can make money with this... *___*

Dont forget to update flashplayer and java... ^^

"snd_sewer", or "snd_keep", which is more awesome? They are both so great! "snd_commons" is used a bit too frequently though...

Is there any way the console could display that? For example, "playing snd_sewer (sewer.ogg)"?

I think/hope so. Instead of printing out newAmbient, it'd print out getKey("newAmbient"). I'll try it for 2.02. There's a reason the mapper has to use a local name BTW, even though it's annoying, because the engine likes sounds to be pre-loaded in their speaker with a local name linked to the track... Otherwise I'd have just gotten the tracks directly from their markers.
-
Update: Done. That was easy. Hopefully it gets into 2.01 even.

I walked to get dinner. I got back and tried to sneak in without allerting the dog. All the windows were shut and yet I heard it moving around before I even reached the door! Do they have ESP? How did it detect me?!

I'm about two seconds from taking my $150 Blu-ray drive outside and introducing it to a bat. The thing produces nothing but coasters on both Windows and Linux. If I do, I will record it.

maybe its a bad batch of disks, I had 30 disks that wouldn't burn all out of the same stack. On close inspection they all had the same twist defect in the plastic surface.
-
I solved it by using another burning program: CDBurnerXP. I recommend it! I was nurvous about looking for free burning apps, but this was recommended by humans on a forum, rather than one of those sleezy download sites.
-
It accomplishes the task without nagging you to order an upgrade, verifies the disk, and writes DVDs/Blu-rays too.
-
You ordered a package. The tracking system says it was delivered, but it is nowhere to be found. You call the office, but they CAN NOT even radio the driver to find out what he did, because that would be too ****ing simple. They want to contact the shipper, as though he can do jack about it. Welcome to the US, where everything is inefficiant, expensive, and more complicated than it needs to be.

Its the same in the UK. But if the item goes missing its the person/company that shipped it responsibility.

A user has a machine that won't boot Windows anymore. I stick in a cheap thumb drive and up comes an accelerated 3d Desktop, with sound, networking, wifi, etc. User is amazed. They can even play their games on Facebook and watch Youtube. Everybody should have these in case of emergencies...

As long as it will POST and *attempt* to boot from something, (CD, USB, hard drive, Floppy) sure! You don't even need a hard drive in the machine.

... and I fixed her machine by repairing the MBR. Before I did this, she had another guy look at it and he charged her $50 without solving the problem.

There are always specialists like "you need to buy new motherboard".

I frequently hear people street racing in the middle of the night. Last night, I'm laying there at about 2 AM. I hear somebody go racing by again... but then I hear a siren blare and another engine rev up after them. All I was able to do was laugh. I hope the guy got busted...

I don't care if someone who drives carelessly kills themselves. Their life, their choice, deal with the consequences. What I do care about is some innocent who gets in their way and has to pay for someone elses carelesness.

On the subject of Darwinism, my brother lives on a huge hill. There are winding roads heading up and NO guardrails at all! I told him, "at least you don't have to worry about drunk drivers up here because they wouldn't make it this far". lol

So, did you guys expect to become so popular today? I haven't been able to access thedarkmod.com all day! Hopefully we will be seeing (even more) new people around here. Welcome to all the new members.

You're making me want to dig out Clive Barker's Undying again!

Alas, the Undying's textures are not as perfect as the Unreal's ones, but, of course, Undying is a perfect game for me.

So... is anybody making any scary missions for Halloween?
- Show previous comments 3 more
-
I would if I could.
-
I plan to do a haunted manor FM once the final part of the Vengeance trilogy is complete. So maybe next years Halloween.
-
I was going to, but siegeshop took up my time. Then I thought of upgrading my p.o.s. Samhain map, but decided to leave that quirky little mission alone. Next year, I suppose. Maybe an 'Garreth goes to Hel' type mission, inspired a bit by the game 'Rune', mixed with the strangeness of the "Constantine" mansion.

I didn't really care too much for System Shock 2... until I reached the recreation deck. The environment just wasn't that interesting. Then it got all dark and scary, with enemies attacking in interesting ways and now I'm really enjoying it.

I'm at the Rickenbacker now... Also, I did try the SS1 demo a wile ago, but it hasn't aged as well as SS2 has. I'm not talking about graphics, but the engine in general. That would have been extremely impressive when it came out though.

There's a mouselook mod that makes it easier to play, though when you're familiar with the UI and all it becomes very fluid and natural.

Its funny hearing the voices of "Thief guards" as the crew of the ship.
