  1. For the record: I couldn't map my way out of a grocery bag. I personally am not too picky on what a contest would be about. I think we all share the same goal: to have more missions to play.
  2. I just tried to get zdoom working on my new Arch Linux machine to play Action Doom 2 (great game BTW). Problem is, Zdoom uses a proprietary sound library that doesn't even have a stable ****ing ABI. That means if the game wants version 4.24 and you've got 4.32, you're out of luck. This is why I'm glad id releases their stuff under the GPL and not the BSD license, so someone can't link it to libraries like this.
  3. (/joking) That's not a bug, that's a feature to help protect FM authors from evil "pirates"! Seriously though, what OS are you using? Someone earlier suggested Linux, but there's no such thing as a D drive in Linux. I use Linux, so I know first hand. On the other hand, if you're using Vista (and I presume 7), you should be aware that they use a "virtual storage" system for your local settings and program data. Long technical description follows... In the past, anyone could do whatever they felt like on a Windows system. All users could write to the Program Files directory, which meant that software developers took advantage of this when writing their programs. Your game would save states and config files to its original directory, and so would Tom's account who shares the system with you. At some point, they began to focus on security... except they can't just disallow everyone from writing to restricted folders. If they did that, many older programs would break, or have to be run as administrator, which could also be a security risk. So, in your local settings on a modern Windows system, there is a "virtual store" folder that holds a fake copy of the game's folder, where your changes and saves can be stored. The game thinks it is writing to the original directory, when in fact it isn't. I'm not sure if TDM uses this feature of Windows, but you might want to check for files in your documents folder.
  4. The other day I was playing the original Return to the City. I took out the first guard with an arrow, (maid some noise) and everyone came to kill me! even the joined in the party. I didn't think this was a 1.03 issue, I thought it was an issue with the original map due to portaling.
  5. I tried this set to 5 and everything looks great, except... if you mantle on top of a light source (like I did in NHAT2), the lense flare starts flashing. I tried setting it to 25 and the flashing was much less rapid, so this must be the cause. Setting it to 1 eliminated the flashing.
  6. Put me down for daytime missions. You would be surprised how well they actually work! One of my all-time favorite missions was Circle of Strain 2 for T1, which is a daytime mission. I also started playing "Meuan's Method" for T2. It is great! It is a small mansion heist, but since the level is set in the daytime, you need to hide behind arches to sneak inside and then avoid being next to those translucent windows to the outside. Even if you turn off the lights inside the house, the sunlight still spills in from the window and it can give you away.
  7. IIRC, only if you're close (within talking distance) to the other character.
  8. Speaking of Doom 3, how many of you shot Scotty on your way to find the missing scientist near the start of the game? He was the guy talking to his partner who was doing maintenance in a shaft. You then hear his partner say "Boss? Hey, what the **** is going on up there!" lol
  9. Never played this game, but if they were willing to release this, it restores more faith that they will allow the Doom 3 stuff to be opened too.
  10. So, I got the machine today. It was much cheaper than planned and it runs great! I'm currently using 3% of the system RAM.I shipped that one power supply back and they refunded me right away, no questions asked. Debian worked right out of the box. All I had to do was install an updated NVidia driver from their web site, but networking and sound work fine.

    death...

His father died this morning at about 11 AM. I never did get a chance to go visit the father one more time, and now I never will. I was planning to do it after the holidays were over with, because they said he would be around longer than this. This is another example of why it is a bad idea to put things off to a later date.
  12. I played this mission on 1.02 and didn't notice any problem with the water footsteps.
  13. Sadly, it seems there are a few bugs with this mission in 1.03. There is no ambient music in the mission now, even though my volumes are turned up. The "wading through water" sounds in that portion of the map are extremely loud.
  14. ... and since these guys are going to be cloaked figures who look similar to the player character, would it be possible to share their animations with the player model? This would make mirrors look accurate, and would eventually be good for a coop mod, which should turn up some day.
  15. Looks good... great work! It will be nice to see another faction in-game.
  16. He probably just has fond memories (like me) of creating zombie chunks in Thief 1/2. I would never want gibbable guards, but I guess LGS came up with gibbing zombies from the old legend that zombies can only be killed by destroying the body. That was the only way to kill them in Thief, after all. In TDM, we can even kill zombies with the sword. This aint easy though.
  17. That should be doable. It seems like "gibbing" is out of modern games, but characters could be gibbed in Doom 3 with the flashlight.
  18. This mission feels straight out of Thief 2... and that is meant as a compliment. We haven't had many town-based missions where you can break into many residents like this. It reminds me of Life of the Party very much.
  19. Alright, I've started ordering parts today. I went with 8 gigs of DDR3 ram @1333 mhz for $114 and a msi 870-g45 motherboard. I cheaped out and ordered a Thermaltake TR2 W0388RU 600W ATX 12V v2.2 Power Supply. It is only $40 after a rebate, and my alternative was a $75 Antec EarthWatts. Only question I have about that is that this one doesn't say Active-PFC. I hope this wasn't a mistake. I know Thermaltake is supposed to be a decent brand, so it should be trustworthy. Now I must decide on a video card. The only modern game I currently care to play is TDM. I will not be buying Windows 7 until/unless it becomes absolutely necessary to run any of my software. This machine will run Linux and Windows XP for those old games like Thief 1/3 and some others. Thus I do care about support for the latest OpenGL stuff, but not DirectX. I can get a GTX260 with 896 megs of RAM for $130, or a GTX 460 with only 768 megs for $160. Which should I buy? I will pick up the CPU at the store, because I have gift cards to reduce the price by a good chunk. How's this "Palit Microsoystems" GTX460 for $140? http://www.mwave.com...riteria=AA98983 EDIT: Meh... It says that power supply is >72% efficient. That isn't too far from 80, and really isn't worth crying about for almost $30 less thanks to the rebate.
  20. I tried a TDM setup once with symbolic links when my / partition was small. For some reason, it broke the light-gem, but missions still loaded fine. I was spammed with error messages about lightgem.tga in the console or something. The nice thing about these links is that we can save disk space. Let's say I have an install of Tremulous in both Windows and Linux. Both games use the exact pack/resource files. So, I install the game to the Windows partition and only copy the Linux executables to my /usr/local/games. Thus I don't have to pay twice in disk space to hold all of the redundant levels/sounds/textures etc.

    death...

Funny that you mention that. My mother used to smoke like crazy when she worked. Then about eight years ago, she had an aneurysm. It didn't kill her: she is mostly fine now, but she doesn't smoke any more. As a matter of fact, the aneurysm probably extended her life because it took so many months for her to recover that she doesn't care to smoke any more. Hopefully she doesn't end up with cancer. Sadly, I have another friend who I tell to quit smoking, but she doesn't listen. Her dad died about four years ago at a young age due to cancer.
  22. Double post... woops. I'm surprised someone hasn't posted a screen shot of an AI half-stuck through a bed with the caption "you're half the man you used to be". It is also fun to spawn AIs and get them to battle it out. Sometimes this works, sometimes they just stand around and don't fight. It is helpful to use the command "killmonsters" to clean up the mess though, because lots of AIs will bring frame rate way down.

    death...

I've had this friend for the past twenty-one years. His name is David. I haven't talked to him much over the past nine years or so. We never got in a fight or anything like that, we just went separate ways. Now I hear his father is about to die from lung cancer. I remember his father well... he is a nice guy. So, I spoke to David's mom the other day. She told me that David called one of his "best friends" when he found out about his father's situation. Apparently this "best friend" replied with the following: "Well, your dad WAS a smoker wasn't he? He did it to himself." That is a pretty terrible thing to say to a friend. I should probably give David a call. It is nice to try and help people when bad things like this happen and I would appreciate it if I were in his place. This whole ordeal makes me wonder even more about what happens to us when we die though. I am not a religious person or anything like that. I do not believe in a "heaven" or a "hell" for the following reason. If I had to spend the rest of eternity doing anything, it would eventually get boring. That is to say, if I could have whatever I wanted or do whatever I wanted forever, it would eventually become "hell". Understand? My personal hope and belief is that when I die, I will just cease to exist. I won't know I'm dead, and I won't be transported to some afterlife to spend an eternity awake and conscious of my surroundings. What do you guys think happens to us when we eventually die?
  24. (Duke Nukem 3D) There's also a ~3 GB beautiful texture pack floating around for Quake 1. These engines have real-time lighting/shadows now, but of course it isn't that simple. Somebody has to go through all of the original levels and place light sources or it won't look right. This has already been done for Quake and is being done for Duke3d. Hopefully we'll see classic Doom with real-time lighting some day. That would be cool.
