  1. Other good ideas: Player character drops dead if he tries to swim in water (similar to TDS) unless he purchases the "Amphibious Adventures" DLC. Object manipulation is changed so that he can only *throw* things, and not set them down gently without the "Tip-toed taffer" pack. No torches or candles may be doused without the "Farrell fights flames" expansion pack. ...and... One out of every ten doors in TDM should be set to open at an extremely high velocity (randomly chosen of course), not giving the player time to step out of the way, and taking away some health if the door hits him. The player may overcome this with the "dodging dangerous doors!" DLC.
  2. How about giving the player rope arrows that snap when he jumps on them unless he makes a donation? You could also give him one lockpick and sell the other as DLC. haha
  3. Debian (Linux) user here willing to beta test. I just got back from a trip and have some of that real-life crap to take care of tomorrow, but I should still have plenty of time this weekend! Also, surprise missions like this are appreciated! I was hoping somebody would do that.
  4. I prefer expansion packs myself. They tend to be longer, but not as long as the original game.
  5. ... went over there today and the PC is still in the same shape. The video card is supposed to arrive on the 30th. I heard a grinding sound coming from the machine when she had it on for a wile, which was most likely the video card fan's last gasp.
  6. You may be angry, you are definitely right, and you definitely aren't alone. I've had games that I *paid for* install hidden device drivers on my system as part of the anti-copying malware. Not only this, but the CD-key was printed by some terrible-quality printers, where the B's looked like the 8s, which also happened to look like the 0s. This company shall remain nameless, but rest assured that I would rather eat a bag of computer screws and motherboard stand-offs than ever give them a cent again. I honestly don't get it. Why do they want to instill hostility in the customers who actually still plunk cash down for these things? It seems rather stupid, unless they want to drive everyone away. On the bright side, we do have a community of folks throughout the world who create quality content while not scamming the consumer. From game mods, to maps, to music, to writings... all of this information is created and shared without a profit-motive or hidden agenda, because PEOPLE WANT TO. I cannot remember the last time I heard something as beautiful as this or this from the mainstream entertainment industry.
  7. The machine doesn't appear to have onboard video. The monitor was connected to the nvidia card via a DVI to VGA adapter. When I connected the netbook, I just discarded the adapter. I suppose there's a chance the adapter could have something wrong with it, but that is extremely unlikely, because no one moved the machine and those adapters are quite simple.
  8. Now THIS is tempting... Phenom II x6 1075t at 3 GHz for $200 Motherboard supporting DDR3 1600, up to 16 gigs via 4 slots = $60 4 gigs of DDR3 1333 memory for $60! *recycled 1 TB SATA 7200 RPM drive from my external enclosure, and recycled DVD drive from a current PC* EITHER a Geforce gtx460 at $170, or a cheaper gtx260 for $99, or even another Geforce 9800gt for $55 some decent case and power supply I've yet to find for about $70 Grand total: under $600 for a pretty decent machine depending on video card choice. What do you think? Here are the links Motherboard: http://www.amazon.co...IN%3DB0035JL2UU (note manufacturer says the board supports six core but amazon doesn't). CPU: http://www.newegg.co...-AMD-_-19103858 RAM: http://www.komusa.co...hymifco4gb.html Video card: http://www.pricewatch.com/gallery/video_cards/geforce_gtx_460 It is too bad I have to go out of town next week, because I'm about two seconds from ordering this. It is just so tempting.Perhaps these deals will still be there next weekend when I return.
  9. One of the things that made my jaw drop back in 1999 were the graphics in Sonic Adventure. All of the rooms/windows/shops appeared believable, with depth behind them and environment mapping applied. They used simple box geometry behind the windows with a simple texture or two applied to the walls inside the rooms. It makes the player feel like they're in this giant world, rather than just an environment with painted textures. This sort of thing could probably be done in a TDM city-style mission, but if the non-essential buildings look too believable, you'll start getting questions like: How am I supposed to get in there?
  10. We figured this isn't the monitor, because my netbook looks fine when connected to the thing. This is a desktop she purchased from Dell in late 2008, and already the video card appears to have croaked. Have any of you seen this before? The machine operates perfectly fine, booting up and playing sounds and logging in and browsing the web and all. The screen is just full of garbage the whole time though. This makes me think that it isn't the motherboard. Fortunately, we found a Geforce 9800GT card for $55, which is a heck of a deal. I already tried using the other DVI port on her current card just for the heck of it and everything was still garbled. I saw something on another forum about overclocking the video card slightly and that it might help... is that totally insane? The desk she has is basically a deathtrap for computers. The PC is stuck back in an alcove with wood surrounding it from all sides except from the front. I would never store my machines that way. Perhaps that is what caused the problem. I didn't bother to install nvclock and check if the fan on the video card was working, or what temperature it was running at. Now she is using an eight-year-old P4 that I left there when I moved out.
  11. Thanks for working on this. I was one of the guys who felt we could use more door sounds. I know the team is busy with the gameplay and mod in general, so it is nice to see users contributing things to make the project better. I considered trying to record door sounds, but it is a delicate art. You don't want them to be too loud and aggressive (what thief would ever use doors like that?), but you want them to be audible at the same time. There are some alternate door sounds in the TDM resources, but they weren't used much up until recently. Bikerdude's latest mission used a variety of them for example.
  12. Nah, even if it is a terrible game, I would still like it to be released. I always have the ability to ignore it and not play it. I was one of the guys who waited for Duke Nukem forever since 1998. A bad game can still be extremely
  13. I first read about it on TTLG forever ago. I checked out the TDM site a few times throughout the years, but never ventured into the forums. When it was released late last year, I became much more interested in the mod, playing all of the FMs and enjoying them. I finally decided to join the forums to discuss FMs and the mod in general earlier this year.
  14. I played in Linux. I didn't have any leaks or anything like that, but I did get the "out of date" message and had to run dmap. This happens only with some missions and not others, like Bikerdude's latest one. I wonder why that is.

Also consider the fact that there's a limited choice of games for Linux, and TDM is basically the only game of the kind for the platform. It may require Doom 3, but it is absolutely nothing like Doom 3.

I just called and left a message for "The Linux Action Show", which is a podcast about Linux. They're planning to have an episode dedicated to games soon, so I told them about TDM. I envy anyone who discovers the mod at this point, with its 33+ missions! A newbie is sure to find something they'll like.

I make it a personal rule not to rely on things that require "phoning home" to function. If you need proof of why this is bad, search google for the words: "kindle 1984". *on topic* For publicity, I would like to see more FM playthroughs on youtube. I've searched for The Dark Mod videos, but some results didn't show up because they're called TDM, and not Dark Mod.
  18. Just completed the mission for the second time. I really like the placement of lights in this one.
  19. I have a feeling I already know the answer to this, but... Would it be possible to have all of the windows in a mission (like Sotha's new one) be translucent? I understand about the "sectioning off of the map for performance", but it would help immersion IMO. Will computers eventually get powerful enough to just render the whole world, or will the Doom 3 source be modified in the future to allow this?
  20. So, this is the mission you were planning to put the new female characters in before?
  21. SPOILER Yeah, I couldn't find a way to avoid alerting the card players. I just made some noise and blackjacked them when they came to look for me, one at a time. I guess that is practically cheating though. A gas arrow would have done wonders there. *shatter/hisssssss thump thump thump thump* lol
  22. I first played TDP on a PC that we put together from scrounged parts. I was a young teen at the time. At first, all of the textures were completely white and for a time I thought this was normal. Then I got rid of the Permedia 2 card I was given for free and replaced it with a Voodoo 3. It wasn't as pretty as Unreal, but man was the atmosphere perfect! I still remember the Bonehord in the middle of the night and finding that little "surprise". Also, the apparitions used to creep me out... just the sounds they made!
  23. Thanks. Already downloaded, and I'll play it tonight. The nice thing about this time of year is that the sun goes down early, so we don't have to stay up as late to play some TDM or Thief!
  24. On the bright side, this time the game may actually work on multi-core processors without clumsy workarounds. Heaven forbid they release a patch to fix these issues for the older games.
  25. Any chance we'll be seeing this before Thursday? I'm going somewhere over the weekend.
