  1. Wow, I’ve had similar VP behavior with three doors on the same wall, two in one room one a floor above. They seemed ok but showed the void through even though they were red. Didn’t know how I fixed it, I just slightly adjusted all their dimensions .5 units at a time until they worked, all trial and error til by happy accident I stumbled upon the fix you described and even then I wasn’t sure how I came to it. Knowing what you just described helps a TON, thanks! So to be redundant and extra clear, sometimes VPs behave odd if they are on the EXACT same X or Y plane??
  2. Truth be told it’s a small area, made to look big with illusions and visual trickery. The forest area has a border of rocks and boulders. Inside of this the player will stay, outside this border are more trees crammed in at a higher elevation so it appears the forest is bigger than just the playable space and seems to stretch on further than you can reach or get to. The trick really is using enough trees so the horizon is blocked out and you don’t feel like you’re in a petri dish. Only a couple large VPs and it runs fine. For my “forest trails” sections, it’s the same principles as above, just more of a tunnel fashion as far as sealing geometry. Plenty of bends and VPs do the trick to keep it running good on my jalopy PC. But more on topic, forests can work! And BD’s Alberic’s Curse was of course the inspiration and benchmark I’m shooting for.
  3. And when you look up, that view can still give me chills. Forests are a thing now.
  4. I'm critical on my own work but I think yeah believable forests are possible. It's way better when you are walking through it and can hear all the ambient noises, but I think its okay. I'll throw some grass down before release but for now it's workable. All you can really see is leaves, but in my map that's the point, disguises the small area and adds to the illusion of size if you get turned around.
  5. I found it to be cool but slowed down my big area too much. The player reflection was annoying when submerged past the waist, it just got on the way and looked wrong, like bad misaligned body awareness. If there’s a way to do what you hope for, I’d like to know too, and how much it affects frames, etc. Reflecting everything else in the area looks beautiful but I settled with the fake reflection of just the sky and stars for now.
  6. Yessss Bafford’s might still be one of my favs, probably because I played that Eidos demo over a hundred times before I got TDP.
  7. I love the atmosphere Jack! Can't wait to see more. Always impressed with the mood you imbue your maps with. It's the air of mystery that always grabs me. How do the separate parts work? Is each part a different difficulty? Added a light to the pool, and moved some others around, got a balcony put in which of course is pointless if you can't use it or get to it. So spoiling a path of ingress is ok as it should be obvious when you see it in game. The point was nailing the execution of getting your taffin' arse up there from ground level. Which is fun, but my challenge now is portalling the yard correctly so it doesn't run like crap when you're above the pool. I haven't figured out my perfect workflow yet for mapping, and like most noob mappers I suffer from a sense of scale. Currently I build a scene and then 'pull the void in' and move the sealing geometry to fit the area to cut out wasted space. Not sure if that makes sense, but doing that with good use of VP I can get this rather large scene to run around 15-50fps with an avg of 25 or so. I've got a crappy frankenstein machine that might have been decent 8yrs ago and all my settings are at max. I hope it would maybe run better for folks with better machines but it does make me worry about the viability of this area. Still not sure if it's Tuscan enough, might change the white brick to match the stucco outer walls like the barracks and servant house. Thank you Neon, you replied as I was typing all this lol
  8. Ah damn you just gave me an idea! The answer is in the master bathroom of course. I planned to connect the kitchen below the master with a dumbwaiter, so a boiler room nearby for laundry and other hot water could make sense.
  9. You can almost feel the bumps and cracks in the oil on that canvas. Bravo, Toni & peter! Every week I am blown away by the creativity of this community. A courtyard at the back of my mansion/villa is finally taking shape. Almost nothing is complete or final yet, lots of optimization to do, but I can finally see my first mission coming together. Messed around with the model scaler a bit to get some new trees, I was shooting for a Tuscan villa vibe. I was trying to scan some sheets out of my notebook, but I needed a firmware update and didn’t have time to mess with it before work. I draw out a top down view and go loosely off of that, scribbling notes here and there.
  10. Eager to see the results joe! One thing I was wondering, was this problem existing BEFORE the alterations to the VPs? Had you narrowed this issue down as being a contributing factor to the performance in the said interiors already? I guess my fear is, did I make a bigger headache for you?
  11. I figured it out, it’s embarrassing so I’ll just blame Windows 10. Should I hold on to those corrupt xml files for interested parties?
  12. I just started having this problem this morning. I tried to follow the steps above but I must be doing something wrong. Couldn't find Appdata/Roaming under users, nothing close. I found some xml files just under the normal darkmod/DR folder. I made a copy of them in a separate folder on my desktop if greebo would like a look at them. But deleting them out of the DR folder didn't fix anything next time I restarted. Doing some digging on my machine the only files anywhere that resemble appdata/roaming are under Windows/WinSxS or something crazy, in the screen you can see they don't seem to relate at all. I feel like not even close here.
  13. He’s working on the beta ver2 right now. Don’t know if he wants/needs more testers, but lemme tell you: it’ll be worth the wait. It’s been super fun so far, great vibe and atmosphere with the right amount of challenge.
  14. The tunes refer to the wind chime outside the pub. And biohazard, you mean lab right? It’s a separate code than upstairs, but should be found in a journal I think. Not positive on that one I forgot already.
  15. You shouldn’t have a shortage a volunteers, but if you do I’d love to help. I could use a break from other projects.
  16. Quite a trap that would be. Narcissists love doing that, I got my identity stolen by a relative and they ganked $8k from me. But somehow it wasn’t their fault. Never underestimate them. Sounds like he doesn’t want anyone to remember him as anything other than a golden child; also a symptom of NPD. If nobody has picked up where he left off by the time I finish my campaign I might just do it out of spite. I resent his detriment so much I wrote a short story in February about a prominent builder’s fall from grace and his whirlwind decent into madness as he tries to cover his tracks. The taffer’s job in the mission is to gather info and evidence to expose his shameful acts to the public. I wanted the parallels to be blatantly obvious. But my current story project has been in my head for five years so one thing at a time. i am truly sorry to throw the thread so far off topic, in case you can’t tell I am still butt hurt about it. Thief is my #2 favorite series (across all mediums) of all time, and this mod is what the sequels after Metal Age were supposed to be what we all wanted and hoped for, so I see what he did as setting the entire community and mod as a whole back years of development, despite however much his contributions added up over the years. Don’t get me wrong, I still like and appreciate his work, but it’s harder to enjoy now.
  17. Yes. Strength of conviction. Back to the main point, (the work, not the author) is it actually coming out? Or still abandoned?
  18. You’re him. Calling it right now. Jokes aside, nobody is as breathtaking as Keanu.
  19. Is it nice though? He was the reason I waited until this January to join and start posting. I've lurked for a decade and didn't want to come out of the shadows until he made his final exodus. I've dealt with relatives in my personal life with schizophrenia, narcissistic personality disorder, and pathological liars and lemme tell you I can spot that shite a mile away. Watching his descent from hero to zero was sad and disappointing. His contribution to the mod and his talent and technical prowess were all marred and tainted in the wake he left behind. I'm going to make a bold statement and say my goal in time is to be better than he was/is. I've barely been mapping a few months but give me a few years. If I were a betting man I would put money down on the fact he masquerades around here under the guise of a newb. I'm sorry for venting I don't want to derail the thread; it's all been covered before. I just fear history has a tendency to repeat itself. He's still human and I'm not saying he's a bad guy that we must treat as a leper, but maybe exercise caution. Pretty screen shots though. And peter_spy, I really am excited every time I see new work you show off.
  20. Do we have trees like this? Tall and skinny and real full, typical of Tuscan countrysides. http://www.dolcevitavillas.com/en/destinations/15_tuscany-villas.html I don't know jack about modelling but would that be easy to do by somebody of experience in an afternoon or two? I'll commission by PayPal.
  21. Yup, hit New Mission and down at the bottom by Main Menu and Refresh you will see "Download Missions" upon clicking you shall see:
  22. Thanks you guys, I’ll save it as an afterthought for my FM, when all that’s left to do is beautify.
  23. How do you make convincing fireflies, both sitting still and flying around? BD had some good ones in Alberic’s Curse, also how’d he do those falling leaf particles? Do I use emitters?
  24. Maybe when my life isn’t so hectic, my one year old runs the show. Good to know he’s in the same time zone if I ever have a question!
