I don't think having something like a 25-50% chance (if you're good) to kill one guard in a one-on-one battle is "giving too many choices." Surving two guards at once should be much less likely though, maybe 5%. I don't mean that these numbers are hardcoded in ... just that's about how it should go when we balance everything. That seems consistent with the spirit of the earlier games, that let you maybe kill one guard before his buddies come to kick your ass

If I remember right, we decided that for now, we're not going to add any models or animation to explain the exact mechanism of the rope arrow, we're just going to make it look different for identification purposes.

Update: The moment I ordered a new HD, the noises stopped, and it's running fine now.

Yeah, I think we all have fond memories of the first time we realised we could beat someone to death with the blackjack. Mine was one of those hammerite priests, and I had to keep hitting him or he'd have enough time to cast his spell and kill me. Something had to give eventually.

Happy birthday! Here's hoping you resist the urge to kill for another year!

I didn't drop it, it's just very old. And it has been whirring loudly and irregularly for about 2 months now. Every day I think it's on its last legs.

In death, a member of project Dark Mod has a name...

Heheh, I just hope we don't get sued by Dark City That reminds me, wouldn't the water arrow be the ultimate weapon against those guys?

Nice. This one has been making awkward noises for quite some time. At first I thought it was balanced badly in the case or something, but I tried a few different positions and still heard it. It's also something like 5 years old, so I'm not too surprised. Got all my data on another one, this one's just the OS (but still a pain in the ass if it goes down).

My HD is making dying noises right now, so I may be gone for a few days.

What do you mean stupid science? Like stretching things that are loosely based on science beyond the limit of plausability? (*cough* michael crichton *cough*)

DF, I think you can rotate the arrow so that the fletchings don't hit you in the hand... just like they won't smack into the bow as they slide along it. What hurts usually is when the bow string smacks against the inside of your forearm, but we're already wearing leather bracers, so that problem is pretty much taken care of. As for the angle, I asked this question too, and the answer I got was that it gives more control over the arrow, because you're letting gravity create a little 'nook' for the arrow to rest in, between your hand and the bow. If it's straight up and down, and you're resting it against your finger, it's VERY easy for the arrow to bounce over to the side if you're not careful. I think Springheel was saying that tilting is better for combat/speed shooting for this reason.

Hopefully we wouldn't get in trouble for silhouette infringement

Question: If they hit fire again shortly after firing, is the bow going to drop offscreen, then come back up again? Or is it going to pause in the "onscreen" position for a time representing the time to get another arrow, then re-knock and fire?

Nice, very symbolic. It kinda reminds me of the international sign for Biohazard also

ESIII was fun for the first few days of playing it, then I realised that I can have just as much fun by doing such exciting quests in real life, such as: "filling out tax forms and taking them to the mailbox" "going to the grocery store," etc.

Dear TYROT, Keeper Orland was very disturbed when he heard those words. He acted quite incensed and bid me take down a reply. I have delayed it as long as I can in the name of tact, but Orland was most insistent that the reply be delivered. I now present it: Yo, yo, Keeper Orland comin' atcha from the highest shelf, Gimme the mike MC, so's I can defend my self! Garrett you a Hater You're Brethren and Betrayer One part keeper helper one part keeper Slayer! You cannot be trusted, Your metal brain's rusted Assassins in yo face, 'cause you gots to be dusted! You're sneakin thru my library, peepin' every entry! Why couldn't you just stick to targeting the gentry? Did you get bored with the lords and their jewell encrusted hordes? Instead you bring trouble right to my front door, Openin' secret passages by steppin' on the floor! Unlocking buried secrets from the days of yore! I saw I watched I kept but now can stand no more! yeah, I'm... Getting notes from keeper Caduca although she's dead I can see why one one would think I might be wack in the Head! Yeah I might be crazy, bustin out with this rhyme, But at least I ain't the one that's tryin' to stop time! Yo, yo, Keepers Grab your wands when you see Garr-ett, Grab your wands when you see Garr-ett, Grab your wands when you see Garr-ett, [... and it goes on like that]

Is it filled with sand or ball bearings or what?

Too bad the Queen (or whoever was monarch at the time) never saw the potential for this investment.

Cool, I didn't know it worked. What happened, did he never get the resources to build it? Yeah I guess CPUs can be built with whatever logic gate system you have. I think I remember reading about the water-jet switches. People are trying to use bubbles in liquid for optical switching too. When I go to sleep, I dream of all-optical CPUs. Oh well, sorry to hijack the City Guard thread that was hijacked by the Steampunk thread.
-
The book by Gibson is an "alternate history" thing where Charles Babbage's difference engine actually works, so they have gear logic gates and mechanical-based CPU's in the 1800s. I'm not saying we need CPU's in our world though. Although those mech-beasts must have had some sort of clockwork processor telling them what to do.

I agree disguises should only be a special case FM option. And I still think it could be done with entirely with FM-scripting if we keep the AI reactions customizable enough. It would be just like OM Undercover, but switch the AI reactions to that when you frobbed a specific body in a specific way or got a clothes item or something. While the combat in Hitman wasn't realistic at all, I must point out that Hitman2 gave you the "silent assassin" award and special weapons, etc, if you basically ghosted a map except for one KO. Also, the reward is your own personal satisfaction, just like ghosting in Thief.
