  1. I know this isn't directly related to the level design but...

This was the first mission I played with the improved AI, and I was gobsmacked that the guards noticed I had left a case open on my way out and sounded the alarm. Instead of loading the game I managed to dodge them, distract them and get out as I came in, pulse pounding.

  2. After a couple of years away, I look and see dozens of new missions, including some huge ones.

Sotha's missions have always been my favourites, and on seeing he had a new, smaller one, I had to dive in and make it my re-introduction to the Dark Mod.

I played it on Easy but went for no-knockouts / violence.

A very enjoyable mission, heightened by all the changes in the new versions of the Dark Mod such as enemies noticing doors being open and relighting flames / electric lights.

  3. Ah! Finally figured it out, thanks for the tip!

I felt this was very similar to Gatehouse in style - minimal weapon use, really and just trying to get around enemies and work through exploration.

This mission is absolutely gorgeous - stunning lighting all around - amazing textures and lots of nice niches and secrets.

Also there are SO FEW Precursor/Ancient city type missions even ones like this that only feature a tomb or something are a thrill to me.

  4. I used to think that very broadly, "geek" places were always really safe and pleasant - but even niche communities can be really unpleasant.

I was just reading about this awful loudmouth who worked on a Leisure Suit Larry game outing someone as transgender and was just amazed. You would think that gaming has a bad enough rap in itself that people would be trying to behave themselves and that fans in niches beyond that would all be really supportive.

  5. I am playing this now and absolutely love it so far!

I've gotten myself stuck just past the monsters and before the lava. It's very easy to mantle over the spikes where you put the 3 statues. So when I put the statues down and it made a noise and nothing happened I assumed that there was a bug and just to leap over and grab the sword. That then seemed to break the triggers for the spikes moving to make way for me to move to the next section.

  6. Sorry for being thick but I am utterly stuck:

Went into the tomb, got the grail, failed to find the bits with levers that people are mentioning?

Rope arrowed back the way I came - went to the office and picked up the rusty key. Walked through the flooded rooms to open the sewer grate. In the series of small rooms with spiders. Faced with locked door. Where is the key for this door? :-X

  7. The thing is - Dishonoured just sledgehammers all its world building at you. The Overseers are incredibly, utterly corrupt and they steal babies at birth and make them kill a puppy on their 5th birthday or whatever.

Whereas in Thief the idea of the Hammerites is that they are close minded but they may for the most part be normal human beings who believe what they are doing is right. The factions of Pagan / Keeper / Hammerite are pretty important to my idea of what Thief is.

  8. These two shorts will only take a few minutes, but put a big grin on my face.

They're inspired by the original Fleischer Superman cartoons from the 40s, which had an absolutely staggering budget for each one made. They used rotoscoping to achieve the fluid character movement. Probably more my thing than yours, but perhaps worth looking for. = )

  9. My Dad was all over this in the 90s, but Creatives dominance was too great - and so his tech - despite technically being shipped in every Xbox, and being available as middleware for the other consoles, never really reached its full potential. If a game has amazing graphics, that will fill up 90% of an article about it. If a game has amazing, mind blowing sound, it will only get 10% coverage in an article.

  10. I would like to echo some suggestions here.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth is worth playing just for the first hour or two of gameplay. There is sneaking - there are a couple of frustrating bits where you are shooting bad guys, but I stuck with it right up until it fell apart at the end and didn't regret it.

Dark Messiah of Might And Magic: Absolutely amazing game - it is just missions in large levels, so don't worry about it being like Fallout. I have been saving it up for ages. I'm utterly rubbish at it. =-<

Arx Fatalis: I loved it when it came out but trying to replay it now all I see are the bugs, awful voice acting and difficulty. Definitely worth getting for a couple of quid to try out.

Bloodlines is great, there are fan patches to iron out the bugs and add quests back in that were cut. You can choose to play disfigured Nosferatu, who HAVE to sneak everywhere in the sewers to avoid causing a scene!

Hitman Blood Money I think is a must play. Once you get the hang of it, like Thief, you get out of the FPS mindset and start thinking about how to do things without causing a scene, Was worth playing for me, just for the 3rd level, after a successful hit, calmy striding out of a crowded area, picking up my sniper rifle in a briefcase - as horrified crowds rush to the scene of the "accident".

Deus Ex: HR does have viable stealth, you can go the whole game sneaking and knocking guys out. Likewise the original DE, you can play that killing only 3 bosses throughout. Good old electric prod. =D
