  1. I just rebuilt my PC to run Fedora Linux 16 and I have successfully installed Doom 3 and TDM 1.07. I start up TDM and try to download all the missions. I manage to get the download to run, it progresses to 100% then starts again. This happens 3 or 4 times then announces that the download failed.

Anyone have any idea what's going on? Is it a permissions thing?

  2. In UK law, you have something like 7 days to try things out before you're pretty much tied into stuff. There are probably exceptions but I think that if you're buying a laptop, you really should know what you're actually buying. If it is faulty, it should be directly exchangeable within the first 12 months. If it is unopened, you should be able to refund fine. UK details here:

  3. I can play Doom 3 absolutely fine but TDM pops up with this when I select a mission and get the message telling me it needs to restart. I looked in the directory and see the FM folder with the correct mission selected but get that message. There are a few others but that seems to be the main one. Any ideas? The Wiki only talks about Windows (which I have working fine)

Edit: I did mean to type Ubuntu but it's a typo. If a mod can correct this, it makes me look less of an idiot :)

  4. Personally, I don't care how much money a company pays you...they shouldn't feel they have the right to 'own you' all the time. Sure, if he was goofing off at work and creating fan missions on work time, that would be wrong...but if he is at home on his own computer, building something he wants to build on his own time...that should be his business.

I agree. I'm a professional programmer but if I was working on TDM in my spare time, my employer shouldn't expect to have ownership of TDM because they employ me to program.

  5. Saturnine was hired by a gaming company not long after posting here and discovered that his contract prevented him from creating fan missions for anything. Basically his work would become property of his employer. I hate when companies do that.

    Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! :o

  6. I've no intention of installing yet-another game delivery platform on my computer. Steam will have to suffice and if EA & Bioshock want to shoot themselves in the leg by limiting the game to their platform, then by all means. Their loss. It really is that simple. =)

The next bioshock game will be on steam (check the coming soon tab)

I'd not be surprised to see ME3 coming on there too since there will be uproar if they have to change platforms for the final installment. Sadly, it also means that EA will only be releasing games on Origin in future. It'll mean either longevity or death to them

  7. Can't really disagree with that sentiment. Microsoft used to be pretty crappy when it came to quality. They have really pulled their act together and now I'd say that Windows 7 is the bee's knees in as much as it's stable, reliable and relatively smooth and quick. I haven't had a BSOD on it ever and I'm looking forward to Windows 8 to see how it all moves forward.

I hate Macs anyway. It's easy to claim reliability when you only allow a limited set of hardware configurations.

  8. I would REALLY like to get some help from any interested native speaker in fleshing out the readables in my contest mission, I have all of them planned and roughly laid out, but I'm pretty sure I'll eventually need some help with a bunch of them that I want to get right. If anyone would like to writte some atmospheric texts and personnal notes/diaries kind of thing, let me know! ;)

Get in touch (PM me) and we can sort something out :)

  9. A quick glance tells me that it is looking in the wrong path. I may be wrong but it probably should be

    C:\Games\Doom 3\base\

    not

    C:\Games\Doom 3\base\Doom 3\base\

Also, TDM may have a few problems with the space in "Doom 3" instead of using "Doom3"

Edit: Does Doom 3 run ok before patching? If not, try re-installing with the suggestions I made above (C:\Games\Doom3\)

  10. This has got me thinking (and possibly taking the post slightly off-topic) - how do the mission makers who may struggle with English* get their readables done? Is there any need for help in that area? I'd be interested to know. (I may be picking on an isolated example here - I played Silencium18's excellent 'A Special Delivery' last night and even though it's a short mission, I missed having much in the way of readables to add to the atmosphere.)

*I.e. Not those of you who speak/write English better than many of my fellow countrymen

I'm sure you'll be the same but I'm more than happy to write up some readables for someone in that situation as long as they let me know what they want them to say. e.g. a book on the history of Viktoria may need a clue about a certain room the thief may need to visit. Let me know the secret and I'll weave it into a short 500 word story to include in the book :)

  11. Linux > Wine > Steam > Dear Esther...

    ... downloading now. Hopefully I didn't just waste $10 :)

    Edit:

It runs (maybe). It was loading fullscreen and displaying no graphics, only a black screen, but I could hear music and hear the menu options clicking when I moved the mouse. I edited to video.txt file and set fullscreen to '0'. Now it displays in a window and I could set options, etc. Now to test the actual game...

It Works :) It's a bit stuttery when displaying captions and playing the audio narration while I move around*, but if I stand still during that time it is ok and smooth after the narration stops. Time to explore :)

*only the first narration right after loading was stuttery... the second time it happened, it was smooth as glass.

Glad to hear you got it working :)
