  1. Is there something wrong with the forums lately, or is it my browser? I've been having trouble formatting posts, and just now I couldn't format anything at all.

    I'm using Vivaldi.

Usually I have to: select text, click bold, nothing happens, select again, click bold, then it works.

Same for other stuff, like creating spoilers, bullet points, links. Nothing works the first time.

I have no problem. I use Firefox. @Zerg Rush also uses Vivaldi. Have you tried without extensions, or in another browser?

(btw. bold, italic and underline have shortcut keys: Ctrl B, Ctrl I and Ctrl U, you could try that)

  2. Since Aluminum directed me here ( https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/9082-newbie-darkradiant-questions/page/437/#comment-475263 ) can we have unlimited renderer effects? Well, maybe not unlimited, by maybe 3-5? Thanks.

Since I wasn't the one mainly asking, I'll just cite you in the original thread instead.

There already is a kind of sorting, sort nearest, sort decal, sort <n>. For things like windows and such, sort nearest should probably have the desirable affect, though looking through multiple translucent shaders might kill performance.

Is having multiple render effects really killing performance that badly? I don't understand. You're saying that if I have two transparent objects side-by-side, then they'll just count as two render effects, but when combined, they somehow become something much more difficult to render?

Never-the-less, unless we're talking some kind of infinite portal problem, why not let the mapper choose how much he wants to kill performance? Just warn him against putting too many effects close together.

  3. Since installing the latest versions of my system packages, I hear a loud and annoying static noise crackling in TDM audio. This seems to be different from my stuttering sound issue which was caused by a bad period size setting in OpenAL: Normal sound plays fine without interruptions or lag, but I also hear this annoying popping noise in my headphones all the time. I get it in both the latest release (2.09) as well as latest dev snapshot (dev16269-9407), where the later seems to be producing the noise even more intensely. It's independent of EFX and HRTF, I tried turning both off and restarting but the issue persists. No issues in any other games (eg: 0ad, Red Eclipse, Xonotic) only TDM does this. Persists after restarting my system so it's a permanent issue. My OS is Manjaro Linux on KDE / Plasma. Any other Linux users getting this and know what might be the cause?
  4. Woo!! 2.10 Beta "Release Candidate" ( 210-07 ) is out:

It wont be long now :) ...

  5. I don't think there's a link to thedarkmod.com on forums.thedarkmod.com ...

Yeah and the wiki and moddb. It should have those links in the footer I think. Probably easy to add by an admin.

Edit: And a link to the bugtracker. I'm always searching for a post in the forum that links to that because I can't remember the url.

I drew attention to this several times in the last few years. No one payed it any attention, so I just gave up.

Reluctance to improve the forums is matched by reluctance to allow more people to work on it. Talk about trust and power.

  6. I can't seem to find if this has been solved already so here goes..I started playing "Full Moon Fever" and it seems that Lights/TDM_Lanternlight is the source of a VERY loud Constant HUM. So Much so that I can't play the mission. I'm Playing around with the Console and "Editsounds" but it does not list a Lights/TDM_Lanternlight. I know its the source because if I Flip a Switch in game that turns the Lights off the sound disappears. Any help would be appreciated and keep on making GREAT missions
  7. Hello, everyone! I've done some searches in the forums, and looked in the troubleshooting on the wiki, but there's a problem that's been in Dark Mod for the past version or two that's now prevalent enough for me to log in and report. Not sure if it's an issue with the Dark Mod itself or just one model of light that someone developed and is using in more and more missions, but it's driving me nuts. In several missions, electric lights are used and the tone the game has them emanate...well, I'm supposing it's supposed to be a soft hum, but instead it's a piercingly loud sine wave kind of tone, like you'd hear if you were taking a hearing aid test. It's literally deafening compared to the sounds in the rest of the game, and as more and more levels use this light, it's really cutting down on the levels I want to play. Since no other users seem to be reporting this, I'm wondering if it's because of my particular audio configuration. I am using EAX (through Creative ALchemy) on Windows 10 on a current Sound Blaster card, so I'm wondering if somehow the EAX processing is making the sound so damn loud. The latest mission that seems to have this sound is "In The Black." I'm including a screenshot of one of the lamps in question. This one is in kind of an odd spot on an internal balcony railing, and I can hear it buzzing from well down the hall in another room. There are other rooms that have several of these lamps as well. Is there any kind of tweaking I can do in the .pk4 files to silence this model of lamp until the issue is resolved? I really want to be able to play these missions without being deafened. I'm up for any kind of troubleshooting, or if you'd like me to make a recording from a USB mic of how loud the tone is compared to other sounds in the game to hear exactly what I'm experiencing.
  8. Not so long ago I found what could make a pretty good profile picture and decided to try it out on these new forums. But I couldn't find a button anywhere that would let me change it. I asked on Discord and it seems Spooks also couldn't find anything anywhere. So I logged into an old alternative account and, lo and behold, that account has a button. This is on the first screen I get when I: 1) click on my account name in the top-right of the browser -> 2) click on 'profile'. Compared to my actual account: Are you also missing this button on your account? It'd be very much appreciated if that functionality could be restored to any of the affected accounts.
  9. Hi, I need to know what the code is to use Spoiler Tags. I am using my tablet and I don't have the options to use anything, like spoiler tags, quote tags, text changes etc. Thanks
  10. Hello all, I've just played through a few missions for the first time (bundled ones and 3/4 of thief's den series) on version 2.05. This is a blast! On my system certain music is really loud. It seems to be the "looping" track music stuff for some reason. The ambient slider doesn't seem to do anything and the main sfx volume does work but it scales everything down. I'm currently running it with sfx turned down but it isn't ideal. I noticed it most egregiously in the Chapel Room in Thief's Den 3: Heart of the Lone Salvation. It is deafening with headphones on. Is this a known issue? Or only my system?
  11. Still spreading the word about TDM on forums to new peops... Funny to see people say "Awesome, I loved playing Thief back in the day!"

Yes it was in a discussion where someone was saying how unhappy they are with the way game companies grant themselves permission to do whatever they like to your PC and personal info today. I pointed out that giving up games completely is an unnecessarily overkill solution when there are free games like TDM to play.

Honestly the mod/Indie genre is still really booming right now. And they aint got no reason to do shady invasive privacy bs.

  12. Hi guys, through the "cheats" topic I got the idea, that it would be quite useful, if there were tags for missions (the post was about removing the killing restriction in some missions to suit the prefered play style). I don't know how easy or difficult this is, but with them, it would be quite convenient to pick missions with playstyles, environment, etc one does want to use. This could also be expanded to other mission properties. I remember a discussion about climbable drains, handles on doors, that cannot be picked and other things the map author chooses for himself. That way these things would be clearer and as I said before, it is easier to choose missions with playstyles that suit oneself. What do think?

  15. Did a great find today: Quake 4 mods for dummies. Now online readable. http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/5576-book-quake-4-mods-for-dummies/?p=412644

  16. Here's something I was wondering about already, but after seeing the top comments of the following video, I couldn't help but ask for your opinion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJLEtMaYKOg Now I loved the sound of Garrett walking on stone or wood in the original Thief series. Yeah, I didn't like the consequences, like alerting the guards, I just liked the sound of it. And tbh I was a little bit disappointed when I heard that the Dark Mod's thief running on stone wasn't all that loud. I can't help but like to hear the footsteps I'm making. Does anyone else feel that way? BUT - it's kind of ridiculously loud. When running on stone, you can hear a horse, not a thief. And even when running, it shouldn't be so loud as if you're wearing hooves. So... what are the excuses for it being so loud? I mean, even if they are quieter, the steps in TDM are still unrealistically loud, people here often state how important immersion is. Is it maybe just because it is nicer for the player to hear himself - even more when he doesn't see himself? Maybe the thief indeed wears wooden shoes. But why would he/she do that? Or is it psychologically more correct? (a thief would presumably pay a lot of attention to the sounds he/she produces, so maybe it would seem louder) Or, at the worst, is it the nostalgia, that we simply want to keep some things from the old games which were, due to insufficient technical capabilities back then, highly unrealistic? Let me know what you think.
