  1. Bit of background first: when I first downloaded TDM v1, I suffered the same symptoms: after the first start or two, the main menu would be always completely black. The music would play, and you could click on the menu options if you moved the invisible mouse cursor to the right spot, but still obviously a game breaking bug. At that time, running the updater fixed the problem, and I figured it was probably a corrupted download. Now the problem is back. Just now I've installed a new FM, and the program rebooted itself to a completely blank black main menu screen. Everything behaves the same way, with one difference: running the updater does NOT fix it. In fact, the updater says my installation is up to date. Help would be appreciated. System specs: WinXP Dual Pentium CPU 4 GB RAM GeForce 9600 None of this has changed since I last played, so I doubt it's a hardware problem. EDIT: I've downloaded the torrent (non-updater based) version and overwrote my previous installation with it. It fixed the problem - at least for a short while. I now suspect the problem is integral to one specific FM, namely Glenham Tower. Will post more if I have anything. EDIT: Turns out the issue was most likely that Total Commander automatically puts brackets around certain (hidden?) directory names, and I thought they were meant to be an actual part of the name, so the installation of the FM went wrong. I think, anyway. Problem no longer around.
  2. I just downloaded The Dark Mod and as soon as it finally downloaded I ran the application; my screen went black and this window popped up. Im a newb and don't know what to do.It says that it can't find some of the files. I've ran the updater a couple of times and it says that it's up to date.
  3. r_mode -1 just means to use the custom height and width only. You can still set the aspect ratio to one of the three available modes: seta r_aspect 0,1,2 (4:3, 16:9, 16:10). Try setting a custom resolution that falls into one of those apects and see where it gets you. IE set the vertical resolution to the vertical res of your main screen then use probably 16:9 ratio to get the maximum horizontal res. Exceeding one of the available or set aspect ratios will probably just give you a black screen or crash.
  4. I had this when I was in windowed mode, but full screen worked fine. I needed windowed to work and managed to get rid of the black screen by disabling post processing in the advanced video options. Don't know if either of you are running windowed but it's worth a try disabling post processing. Edit: re-read the earlier posts and realised it affected the GUI not just in game as in my case. Ignore my advice, PP shouldnt affect the main menu at all.
  5. Is the game going fullscreen but only rendered in the top left corner, so the rest of the screen is black? If he's using onboard graphics like intel, he might have keep aspect or don't scale option set. Man there's so many things that it could be.

I had tried deleting the "doomconfig.cfg" file alone but I still encountered the Black Screen problem and not until I deleted both the "doomconfig.cfg" file and the "gamex86.dll" file did I have any success in getting rid of the Black Screen problem. I realize a new "gamex86.dll" file is created each time the game is launched. I'm assuming that the first "gamex86.dll" is somehow corrupted after the first launch and that's why it needs to be deleted so a new and clean "gamex86.dll" can be used on subsequent launches.
  7. I disagree, I think it is the same problem. Just because people are finding different solutions to the problem it doesn't mean that it's not just one problem with a few different solutions to fix that one problem. I do research for a living and I often find there can be numerous ways to a problem but usually there is an easy way to fix the problem and many hard ways to fix the same problem. Yes, I have run TDM without any other Doom 3 Mods installed and still had the same Black Screen problem. I also completely uninstalled Doom 3, patched it, and installed TDM but I still got the Black Screen. Why don't you just tell me what you think is the best solution to this problem? Of all the solutions posted in this thread which one seems like the best solution? I assume with your knowledge you can easily weed out the good ideas from the bad.
  8. Thanks Myagi for the suggestion. Were you also experiencing the Black Screen bug and did this fix your problem? It seems like there are a lot of people experiencing this same Black Screen problem. There is a lot of speculation and a bunch of different ideas but does anyone have a definitive solution to this problem? Again, we all seem to be describing the exact same problem so it seems fair to think that there should just be one solution to this problem. I've tried the solutions listed in this thread but haven't been able to get TDM running. I might have missed something so is there one solution listed here that really should work?
  9. Hi. I've got the same problem here. The Dark Mod runs fine first time, tried to change the resolution and restart, and I get the Doom 3 loading screen, then a black main menu. The Dark Mod music plays but the screen is black. The console still works, and it shows 161 warnings related to being unable to load various assets for the main menu. On a more positive note, I loved the music, and the artwork I briefly saw on the menu was very atmospheric. I'm really looking forward to working this little bug out so I can see some more I think I might try the Linux version tonight...
  10. Okay, I deleted the game files using Steam, deleted all of the remaining files including dark mod stuff, installed doom3 and now it is freezing without doing anything to it. (oh and the steam version is the latest version...there is no patching and never supposed to be any patching required for steam games - manually anyway) Edit: looked at the steam log, and apparently the game goes to a black screen because it has stopped recieving any new frames....which makes sense as the game halts, monitors blacks out (no display), and then I get a black screen (display).
  11. Realtek High Definition Audio and EAX is and has been off. oh and FYI, the music continues without a problem when it goes to a black screen. Edit: I decided to check the version of room (which is correct), but I noticed where it gave me 12 warnings of being unable to load images related to extinguishable light. Would cause this kind of the issues I'm having? Here are the warnings or at least the 11 that it would show me and yes that period warning is what it gave me: Couldn't Load Image: . Edit3: Dang it....looks like I'm going to be the odd one out from here on, no Dark mod missions for me.

I renamed gamex86.dll in doom3/base, still the same error, so I uninstalled RoE, then Doom3, then deleted the Doom3 folder and reinstalled Doom3 without RoE, set it up and made sure it ran OK, patched it to 1.3.1.1304, and checked again it was still running OK. Next I copied DarkMod from the torrent into the Doom3 folder, and ran the DarkMod launcher. Again it ran first time, I changed the aspect ratio and screen resolution, and restarted. Once again it showed the Doom3 loading screen, then a black screen. This time there was one less warning in the console, with 160 warnings shown. It's a puzzle...
  13. Hi, I tried the pkgbuild you posted in the AUR comments section. The package builds and at the end of the installation of darkmod-2.01-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz I get the following errors, /tmp/alpm_YYImnc/.INSTALL: line 2: [: missing `]' chmod: missing operand after ‘g=rwx’ Try 'chmod --help' for more information. If I launch the game all I get is a black screen with a mouse pointer which I cannot exit from.
  14. Hi all, I bought a new laptop with an Intel HD4000 as graphic card by I'm having problems running TDM. First of all I can run Doom 3 and many other games with this card, so I think the problem is not in the video card performances. When I run the game I get the message on top of the thread. I already check FAQ and put in the configuration the fix for black screen, but nothing.   15. Hello! I'm reinstalling windows 7 from iso image right now, and will answer the "tests" questions right after that. Yes on my G53, no on my other rig (no management power) Plugged, always Yep Nope, but I don't think it would explain the problem (Sata 2 speeds are still very good and my SSD wouldn't benefit from sata 3 speeds, plus my desktop doesn't have an ssd) Then I will disable the compression! I usually do but that's not the case on the desktop. But the comment on the temperatures is very relevant, i didn't even think of that! Sadly, I take good care of my computers, the G53 was not hot at all, the fan weren't loud, and on my desktop I have a Noctua cooler with some Noctua fans in an antec nine hundred case, temps are very good. Thank you for your anwsers, I will post in a couple of hours to let you know how the reinstall went. Edit : Ok during the reinstall I took the Dark Mod Folder from my desktop to try it on my laptop, I don't know what I did but the loading times seem good. Loading a save from the first mission (preloaded) only take 1 minute from the click to the moment i can move. (On a SSD) Oh and i can NOT disable compression by setting "seta image_usePrecompressedTextures "1"" to "0", because then the screen menu stays black. But i don't care if the loading times stay about the minute. BUT with the effects/details to the lowest, vertical sync enabled, 1280*768 resolution, i still go from 59/60 to 29/30 ('cause of vertical sync) when looking at a torch, for example. It's really due to the lighting sources, especially moving lightning sources it seems. I'll look for options in the cfg file regarding this.

I updated the driver for my graphic card, reinstalled DM and tried to solve the problem with RadeonPro (as the log kept on mentioning OpenGL I thought to give it a try).   17. nbohr1more got it right the first time. boy do I feel dumb for some reason I thought my version of Doom3 was pre-patched. yeah I'm a dummy today. so it is working now, thank you very much for the help but I have another question. I have a wide 18~ish inch monitor and the game doesn't display all the way out to the side. the top and bottom meet up well but there's close to 2 inches of black nothing on either side of the game. my screen resolution is 1680 x 945 the closest I can get the game setting to that is 1680 x 1050 but the black side don't seem to change any from me adjustingz resolution or aspect ratio. the game seem pinched side to side to me. is there any way I can get the game to display fully from side to side? thanks again

  19. Well I have Doom 3 for Steam, and you can set "launch options" for Doom 3. The option I had set was: +set fs_game sikkmod (to start the hdr mod made by sikkpin) But then I decided to change it to: +set fs_game darkmod (to start the dark mod) Then I read you were supposed to use tdmlauncher so I took that out of the launch options, but still no joy. Edit: Anyways, I took the launch options out and I just double-click "tdm launcher" but I'm still getting a black screen (after seeing the default doom 3 loading screen)
  20. I tried making a thumb-drive upgrade to 1.08 to 2.00 for a friend this evening and encountered this problem again too. Going to Win 7 compatibility did not help. I was able to start the mod using the following steps: 1) Delete Darkmod.cfg 2) Delete gamex86.dll 3) Double click TheDarkMod.exe 4) Black screen is shown 5) hit Alt + Enter to go into Windows mode Now I had a nice little 640x480 TDM which I could scale to higher resolutions. You can shortcut this process by changing: seta r_fullscreen "1" to seta r_fullscreen "0" in Darkmod.cfg and see if it renders.
  21. Alright so I tried a few things out during the last few days, but I still can't figure out how to make this game run... I got the latest driver and I've tried running it in Win7 compatibility mode, as well as running it as admin. I finally got the game log file by blindly going to the console and typing just what you said, here's the link http://pastie.org/private/khjeat5wvdpqkdwrhtrheq The weird part is that I got the game to run once, it just happened randomly after a restart. I proceeded to change the resolution after which it restarted fine as well. I also changed another graphic setting, I think it was the details and tried restarting it and now it doesn't work anymore. Its back to the black screen with the menu music in the background. In conclusion, I still haven't played a single minute
  22. Hey i tried going into the console, but nothing changed the screen was still just black with the menu music in the background. When I press the windows key i can see the menu; however I cant do anything so I have to revert to the task manager to close the program. I have tried every possible compatibility. I forgot to mention this initially, but my os is 64 bit. Any other ideas?

When I launch ./thedarkmod.x86, I only obtain a black screen. To install The Dark Mod, I have created .doom3/darkmod in my home directory. I have downloaded doom3-linux-1.3.1.1304.x86.run to install doom3 (in default directory /usr/local/games/domm3). I have checked that doom3 runs fine. I can lauch doom3 but as I don't have serial number, it stops with a dialog and ask for a serial number. I have downloaded The Dark Mod in .doom3/darkmod with tdm_update. In FAQ, I have seen that some graphic card do not like compressed textures.   24. I finally got around to installing The Dark Mod 1.02. Been meaning to for a long time. The mod looks superb from what I've seen so far. However, the mod was somewhat tempermental to get running well. At first, I had the "menu is a black screen" problem. It seemed to occur the first time I set the window to be full screen. I've also had the issue with the game crashing after several quick saves. But my main reason for posting was to mention the rendering issues I've been having. I'm mentioning a solution I found to one of them, in case anyone else runs into this specific problem. My setup: Win 7 x64, Althon X2 6400+, 2 GB, Radeon 3870, Catalyst 10.6, 1680x1050 resolution. I was having dramatic framerate drops similar to what's been mentioned in this topic. This happened during the training mission included with the mod, in the practice area where you learn mantling and using rope arrows. My framerate was being annihilated whenever I approached the gas lamps near the beginning of that area, after mantling the crates. I knew it had something to do with the lamps, because whenever I specifically approached them the game slowed to an absolute crawl. While up until that point, everything was smooth even at 1680x1050. After trying countless tweaks, I finally found the solution. For Performance Tweaks on the Dark Mod Wiki, it mentions something to try if you get framerate drops around water. On a hunch, I suspected this same setting might help with the lamps. Sure enough, after creating an AutoExec.cfg file with this command, the massive framerate drops disappeared. I'm not entirely sure how this command is detrimental to the image quality of the lighting that the lamps cast, as I don't notice that much of a change. (I think the lamps aren't casting rays on the walls or self-shadowing?) But without it, the game became unplayable. Unfortunately, I've noticed that using this command causes water surfaces to disappear completely for me. No matter what other settings I change. But it was worth the tradeoff. This topic mentions another problem I'm having. The sky isn't being mapped correctly. But Catalyst AI enabled or disabled, it makes no difference. (In fact, I don't notice a difference in loading times either.) Can't seem to find any solution to this. Does anyone have any other ideas? It's not too big of a distraction, though. Maybe I just need to wait for another Catalyst update. (Staying away from Catalyst 10.7.) Oh, and a new tool that ATI owners may find useful is RadeonPro. It's the equivalent of nHancer, for ATI cards. Lets you control and/or force AA, AF, VSync, Catalyst AI, Triple Buffering, and so on.
  25. Hey, the Dark Mod 2.0 has recently stopped working for me. Prior to this, I installed one of the missions in-game (don't remember which one) and during the installation process, the game crashed to desktop. The next time I tried to launch the game (the next day) all I got was a black screen for a short time as if the game would launch and then a crash to desktop, as well as the following crash log: I'm guessing that the easiest fix would be to reinstall but maybe this gives the guys who created this great mod some technical feedback that they might implement in a later patch (?).
