  1. Hey All, I've been viewing the boards as a guest for quite some time now and I hate for this to be my first post, but it is what it is. I'm a huge fan of the thief fanchaise and I'm tickled to see this group investing their lives into a mod that resembles the feel/formula that made the orginal Thief such a masterful game. Anyhow I want to say thank you to everyone who has contributed to this mod's development. Its a great achievement and a jewel to the Thief Community; keep up the fantastic work! Now onto the subject of my post. I didn't see an offical technical problem thread so I figured I'd start one in the hopes that it would consolidate such issues for future troubleshooting for the users and be a means of tracking them for the mod developers. I've just recently installed the TDM: St. Lucia Mod/Map =D. The problem is I'm suffering from some issues. Background about my Rig & Doom3 w/o St. Lucia. - Rig - Make / Model: Custom OS: Vista Ultimate - 64bit - (SP1) CPU: Quad Core Q9550 Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 - (Drivers: Catalyst 8.10) RAM: G.Skill DDR2-800 - (8gig) Motherboard: Asus Rampage Formula - (Chipset: Intel X48) SoundCard: Asus Supreme FXII - (PCI-x card shipped w/ mobo) Monitor: Dual Monitors **Hardware Drivers Updated: 1 month ago. Doom 3 Specifications: Doom 3: Version - 1.3.1.1304 *verified using console* -Able to run Doom3 w/o any problems. St Lucia Video Settings: Screen Size: 1600x1200 Aspect Ratio: 4:3 V-sync: No Antialiasing - Off Ambient Rendering - Standard When I loaded St. Lucia, all the menus / load screens worked well. As soon as I entered the level all the ground / terrain & most building textures were Black. I could see vegetation, static mesh objects like wagons / barrels / pallets / boxes, and the sky box appeared error free. I could also see 2 different building textures, a cross hatched wood type texture and a wood grain texture, the rest of the building textures were black. I would have taken a screenshot of it, but I don't know how =D. I tried adjusting the gamma but it had no affect on the ground / terrain textures. Then after I tried to exit the game for the first time, it crashed and left a light grey screen and I had to hard reset my computer because it was completely locked. There was no error message that I could relay to you either. Since then I have not been able to repeat this crash. I hope this is enough detail to start with. I'd be more than happy to provide more details. I'm just out of ideas and would need a bit more direction. On the topic of screen resolution, are there any plans of supporting widescreen such as the 16:10 / 16:9 resolutions in the future?
  2. My turn for a weird problem. Until recently, r_showShadows 1 drew the outline of shadow volumes for me in blue wireframe lines, visible through solid surfaces, which is correct. r_showShadows 2 drew them as pale blue solid shapes, which get hidden by solid surfaces, also correct. Now, option 1 draws them as black lines which are harder to see, and option 2 doesn't show anything at all. It's not any recent change we've made to the engine. I tried it in 2.02 TDM release build and got the same problem. I wondered if the new catalyst beta driver was at fault, so I reinstalled it. No change. I did a clean remove and reinstall of microsoft .NET, no change. I removed all ATI sofware and reinstalled the stable release version instead of the latest driver, no change. I can't think what else to test. Would someone do me a favour please and confirm whether they can see any shadows with r_showShadows 2 turned on? This end, I'm seeing nothing: I'm losing both the shadows and the debug drawings of the shadow volumes. ??? Edit: It turned out the blue colour wasn't correct after all. Edit2: Updated the thread title because this has become a more general discussion since we got past the bug fix.
  3. You're right, it looked better with the Sikkmod shadow.vp, but it was still broken. Somewhere along the way, we must have lost a line from shadow.vp: MOV result.color, vertex.color; Our shadow.vp doesn't set the vertex colour at all, which is why my lines were black and why option 2 (which uses an additive blend to paint the shadow volume "surfaces") didn't show up at all. Sikkpin's shadow.vp set it to a constant RGB 0-0-1 which is why everything came out blue. But the engine is set up to set the colours itself, using different colours for front faces and back faces, and for different shadow optimisation routines, so you can tell how a given shadow got drawn. It looks much better when you let the engine color it:
  4. I use catalyst. Radeon OSS results in a black screen where the menu screen should be. User permission is Owner: Can View and Modify Content. Groups and Others: Can View Content
  5. Found interesting detail - if I keep only one parallel light, I don't have the issue with brushes not being lit. The problem is that I can't stretch one sunlight to light up both areas. Might have to use a hack - script that moves sun light to a new outdoor area :/ Blocking tunnel with brush doesn't help at all - one room becomes pitch black.

I don't believe UV alignment region shifts are applicable to models but it is well known in the black art of "brush carving" that change the texture alignment slightly will cause dmap to split tris and correspondingly split draws when rendered. This is a boon in cases where you don't want a surface to be hit by too many light passes but obviously a problem where texture alignment is changed for artistic reasons and there's no rendering reason why new draws should be generated. I'm still looking for more CPU skinning engines in the wild. From what I can see, there's a few more out there than I originally reckoned but the examples thus far are mired in proprietary Intel SSE dependencies.
  7. First thanks for providoing such great game! Following the instruction at www.thedarkmod.com/download-the-mod/ I download the tdm_update.linux. It looks ok in updating process because no error message found. When launching the game, the screen becomes blank/ black, but the sound is playing. It looks like texture problems or something from the log below, but I am not sure. How can I fix it? My environment is lenovo t420s with debian testing.   8. I think this is a precision issue. When you are so close to black you start to need more precision to reduce banding. One workaround would might be to dither the gradients in the source image. Is fog in the affect map? Do you have post processing enabled? Both can cause more banding artifacts. Some dither in the renderer or shaders would help there too.
  9. That BenQ is the one that turned up in searches I did also researching your topic. I don't like glossy bezels either however my current stable of monitors have glossy bezels because that was the only option and suprisingly they're not distracting and particularly in the dark appear pitch black and melt away in to the scene. I can't say I'm fond of them but they are much less issue that I'd previously thought. They do require frequent weekly dusting though. All of my monitors are 1920x1200 so yes I agree completely with you. There are 10bit lcd panels out now but they're used mainly in medical and specialized industries and aren't cheap what-so-ever. $5,279 $1,400
  10. Too expensive @ £350+ per monitor and the black levels on this montor are worse than my Nec's. But there is a Dell U2413M out there that is £150 cheaper, but can find any comparisions so I can see what Dell have removed.
  11. Thanks for the help guys! So i found the solutions to my problem, still i don't know the exact cause. The black room was caused by 4 pillars (worldspawns) i copied and pasted there. I Just created new ones the it didn't cause the glitch. The see-through wall was caused by weird-ass brushes i made to give shapes to my cavern walls. It seems DR really doesn't like off-grid and weird shaped brushes. These didn't even collided with the wall at all. On an other note, i need an other way of giving curves to my cavern walls. How can i do so without creating weird brushes?

The package builds and at the end of the installation of darkmod-2.01-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz I get the following errors, /tmp/alpm_YYImnc/.INSTALL: line 2: [: missing `]' chmod: missing operand after ‘g=rwx’ Try 'chmod --help' for more information. If I launch the game all I get is a black screen with a mouse pointer which I cannot exit from.
  13. Hi all, I bought a new laptop with an Intel HD4000 as graphic card by I'm having problems running TDM. First of all I can run Doom 3 and many other games with this card, so I think the problem is not in the video card performances. When I run the game I get the message on top of the thread.   14. If you want something that can handle black properly, you need to spend more than $200, e.g. for an EIZO. I made some bad experiences with cheap LG displays, although I am loving their fullsized TVsets. Samsung has a good cost-performance ratio in the lower priced segment that you are currently looking at and I would also throw HP into that category.

  16. Well Windows 7 reinstalled on my desktop, clean as it can be, newest drivers, windows updates, etc... Still there. 1 minute to load a savegame in "Vengeance For A Thief Part 1" (which is decent, i don't mind it) Fps drop from 59/60 to 29/30 when discovering NEW torches in the streets, but for 4/5 seconds "only". i don't think the probleme has changed, it's just I discovered a new aspect of it. When discovering a new light source (like some new torches in a street), fps drop dramatically (Even though the details options are on the lowest/disabled). But 4 to 5 seconds after (roughly), back to 59/60fps, and it does not drop when I move. Until I find new torches. It's pretty annoying to play, i'm still trying some changes in the darkmod.cfg that could get rid of this, but considering the long load times i'm not very efficient. x) Edit : And sometimes, when testing the lights in the street, the game freezes, go black, and crash : I only got this 2 or three times though, and it may be related to the changes i tried in the cfg file. When i played the missions seriously, it never occured. Edit : Well maybe it's not the light sources after all but mostly new objects/environments. It seems as if I lacked graphic memory. I saw the setting : "seta com_videoRam "128" " in the cfg, changed it to 800 then 512, no change. I'm gonna try to get Doom 3 performance settings in there.
  17. Hello! I'm reinstalling windows 7 from iso image right now, and will answer the "tests" questions right after that. Yes on my G53, no on my other rig (no management power) Plugged, always Yep Nope, but I don't think it would explain the problem (Sata 2 speeds are still very good and my SSD wouldn't benefit from sata 3 speeds, plus my desktop doesn't have an ssd) Then I will disable the compression! I usually do but that's not the case on the desktop. But the comment on the temperatures is very relevant, i didn't even think of that! Sadly, I take good care of my computers, the G53 was not hot at all, the fan weren't loud, and on my desktop I have a Noctua cooler with some Noctua fans in an antec nine hundred case, temps are very good. Thank you for your anwsers, I will post in a couple of hours to let you know how the reinstall went. Edit : Ok during the reinstall I took the Dark Mod Folder from my desktop to try it on my laptop, I don't know what I did but the loading times seem good. Loading a save from the first mission (preloaded) only take 1 minute from the click to the moment i can move. (On a SSD) Oh and i can NOT disable compression by setting "seta image_usePrecompressedTextures "1"" to "0", because then the screen menu stays black. But i don't care if the loading times stay about the minute. BUT with the effects/details to the lowest, vertical sync enabled, 1280*768 resolution, i still go from 59/60 to 29/30 ('cause of vertical sync) when looking at a torch, for example. It's really due to the lighting sources, especially moving lightning sources it seems. I'll look for options in the cfg file regarding this.

However a SEED that had func_static sources exhibits that exact behavior. It crashes using quickload, load saved game, or when the game tries to load the statistics at the end of mission. You can reload TDM and access the same once per session however. The objects also don't show up properly post save if you reload TDM, they show up as black cubes instead.

I updated the driver for my graphic card, reinstalled DM and tried to solve the problem with RadeonPro (as the log kept on mentioning OpenGL I thought to give it a try).   20. I rarely suggest this, but were I you, I'd seek to change what I could on my system to replicate those who have more success running it. So far you seem to be a minority of one (although I'm quite familiar with the 90-9-1 rule, and there are likely others in your circumstance as well who haven't spoken up, compared to those with different experience from you who have). However parameters of compatibility are not determined by an individual finding less success than most users. There's no "on the fence". Others consistently report the same findings on specific missions. Your experience is different. That's okay. Such is the nature of life, it's not black and white. However your experience does not dictate others'. Hence multiple folks suggesting giving false information (won't work on XP) isn't an appropriate way to go (since it does work on XP, even for you in most cases, and your circumstance seems to be an outlier). The purpose of compatibility guidelines and information provided on a wiki is to do just that, provide a guideline and information. It's not a guaranty. Removing information, or providing inaccurate information for most peoples circumstances, is not helpful to them. My condolences your perspective may differ. However please recognize that your contribution does matter, and you are heard, and who knows, although MS has extended their support of XP recently, things might change with future development, and XP will fall off the list? Or greater accommodations may be made? Perhaps more future missions will be more demanding and we'll all remember your suggestion and be motivated to pull it then. However currently it seems all those actually playing with XP would wonder why their OS wasn't listed were it removed it seems. ;-)
  21. Here's a condump after a quicksave, then the quickload surprisingly/fortunately didn't crash, but the seeds came back black/cubes, so I did another condump, then the same quickload crashed.   23. Including the training mission, most of them just return to the objectives screen after the loading bar is full or just hang on the load screen. St Lucia on the other hand says to press "Attack" to start, which is Left Mouse button but nothing happens. Tried pressing all the keys and nothing happens. So far this is just fancy front end where nothing happens.   24. I tried making a thumb-drive upgrade to 1.08 to 2.00 for a friend this evening and encountered this problem again too. Going to Win 7 compatibility did not help. I was able to start the mod using the following steps: 1) Delete Darkmod.cfg 2) Delete gamex86.dll 3) Double click TheDarkMod.exe 4) Black screen is shown 5) hit Alt + Enter to go into Windows mode Now I had a nice little 640x480 TDM which I could scale to higher resolutions. You can shortcut this process by changing: seta r_fullscreen "1" to seta r_fullscreen "0" in Darkmod.cfg and see if it renders.
  25. Alright so I tried a few things out during the last few days, but I still can't figure out how to make this game run... I got the latest driver and I've tried running it in Win7 compatibility mode, as well as running it as admin. I finally got the game log file by blindly going to the console and typing just what you said, here's the link http://pastie.org/private/khjeat5wvdpqkdwrhtrheq The weird part is that I got the game to run once, it just happened randomly after a restart. I proceeded to change the resolution after which it restarted fine as well. I also changed another graphic setting, I think it was the details and tried restarting it and now it doesn't work anymore. Its back to the black screen with the menu music in the background. In conclusion, I still haven't played a single minute
