  1. Playing in several different missions, it seems that black or very dark areas of the screen seem to take on a bluish-gray tinge, and stand out very strongly. This is visible in a variety of places - dark portions of wall near windows or sky; the spaces between cobblestones or other patterns and guards in shadow are especially so. It's less apparent in sections of the screen near my character, and also more apparent on the top half of my monitor than the bottom half. I've fiddled with my ingame brightness and gamma, turned the LOD up and down, recalibrated my monitor's display, and installed the most recent video drivers, but it still persists, both ingame and in screenshots. Black areas on other people's videos and screenshots appear normal, so I don't think my monitor itself is the problem. My video specs are: Video card:AMD Radeon HD 6700 Monitor: SyncMaster 920NW/920LM (I do have it set to 32bit color) I've also attached a screenshot; the wall in the mid-right of the image looks bluish-grey and is more visible than it should be.
  2. Well Windows 7 reinstalled on my desktop, clean as it can be, newest drivers, windows updates, etc... Still there. 1 minute to load a savegame in "Vengeance For A Thief Part 1" (which is decent, i don't mind it) Fps drop from 59/60 to 29/30 when discovering NEW torches in the streets, but for 4/5 seconds "only". i don't think the probleme has changed, it's just I discovered a new aspect of it. When discovering a new light source (like some new torches in a street), fps drop dramatically (Even though the details options are on the lowest/disabled). But 4 to 5 seconds after (roughly), back to 59/60fps, and it does not drop when I move. Until I find new torches. It's pretty annoying to play, i'm still trying some changes in the darkmod.cfg that could get rid of this, but considering the long load times i'm not very efficient. x) Edit : And sometimes, when testing the lights in the street, the game freezes, go black, and crash : I only got this 2 or three times though, and it may be related to the changes i tried in the cfg file. When i played the missions seriously, it never occured. Edit : Well maybe it's not the light sources after all but mostly new objects/environments. It seems as if I lacked graphic memory. I saw the setting : "seta com_videoRam "128" " in the cfg, changed it to 800 then 512, no change. I'm gonna try to get Doom 3 performance settings in there.
  3. Hello! I'm reinstalling windows 7 from iso image right now, and will answer the "tests" questions right after that. Yes on my G53, no on my other rig (no management power) Plugged, always Yep Nope, but I don't think it would explain the problem (Sata 2 speeds are still very good and my SSD wouldn't benefit from sata 3 speeds, plus my desktop doesn't have an ssd) Then I will disable the compression! I usually do but that's not the case on the desktop. But the comment on the temperatures is very relevant, i didn't even think of that! Sadly, I take good care of my computers, the G53 was not hot at all, the fan weren't loud, and on my desktop I have a Noctua cooler with some Noctua fans in an antec nine hundred case, temps are very good. Thank you for your anwsers, I will post in a couple of hours to let you know how the reinstall went. Edit : Ok during the reinstall I took the Dark Mod Folder from my desktop to try it on my laptop, I don't know what I did but the loading times seem good. Loading a save from the first mission (preloaded) only take 1 minute from the click to the moment i can move. (On a SSD) Oh and i can NOT disable compression by setting "seta image_usePrecompressedTextures "1"" to "0", because then the screen menu stays black. But i don't care if the loading times stay about the minute. BUT with the effects/details to the lowest, vertical sync enabled, 1280*768 resolution, i still go from 59/60 to 29/30 ('cause of vertical sync) when looking at a torch, for example. It's really due to the lighting sources, especially moving lightning sources it seems. I'll look for options in the cfg file regarding this.
  4. I rarely suggest this, but were I you, I'd seek to change what I could on my system to replicate those who have more success running it. So far you seem to be a minority of one (although I'm quite familiar with the 90-9-1 rule, and there are likely others in your circumstance as well who haven't spoken up, compared to those with different experience from you who have). However parameters of compatibility are not determined by an individual finding less success than most users. There's no "on the fence". Others consistently report the same findings on specific missions. Your experience is different. That's okay. Such is the nature of life, it's not black and white. However your experience does not dictate others'. Hence multiple folks suggesting giving false information (won't work on XP) isn't an appropriate way to go (since it does work on XP, even for you in most cases, and your circumstance seems to be an outlier). The purpose of compatibility guidelines and information provided on a wiki is to do just that, provide a guideline and information. It's not a guaranty. Removing information, or providing inaccurate information for most peoples circumstances, is not helpful to them. My condolences your perspective may differ. However please recognize that your contribution does matter, and you are heard, and who knows, although MS has extended their support of XP recently, things might change with future development, and XP will fall off the list? Or greater accommodations may be made? Perhaps more future missions will be more demanding and we'll all remember your suggestion and be motivated to pull it then. However currently it seems all those actually playing with XP would wonder why their OS wasn't listed were it removed it seems. ;-)
  5. Hi there, maybe somebody is able to help me. DM just won't start on my computer. I updated the driver for my graphic card, reinstalled DM and tried to solve the problem with RadeonPro (as the log kept on mentioning OpenGL I thought to give it a try). And in the forum I did not find any thread that seems to fit to my problem. Thanks a lot in advance! This is my configuration: Intel Core2 CPU 6600 @2,40Ghz 2,45Ghz, 3 GB RAM WinXP Home Edition installed and using a ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series as graphic card. And this is what the log keeps on telling me, when I try to launch DM. The screen gets black for a second (as it would really launch) and then all I do get is this log: TDM 2.00 #5890 win-x86 Oct 5 2013 11:19:28 2448 MHz Intel CPU with MMX & SSE & SSE2 & SSE3 & HTT 3072 MB System Memory 1024 MB Video Memory Winsock Initialized Found interface: {76505ED9-E535-4D88-BEB7-69E5F16539C1} AVM FRITZ!WLAN USB Stick v1.1 - Paketplaner-Miniport - 192.168.0.156/255.255.255.0 Sys_InitNetworking: adding loopback interface Found Intel CPU with Hyper-Threading enabled, features: MMX SSE SSE2 SSE3 CMOV tdm using MMX & SSE & SSE2 & SSE3 for SIMD processing. enabled Flush-To-Zero mode enabled Denormals-Are-Zero mode ------ Initializing File System ------ Current search path: D:\Games\darkmod/ D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_textures_wood01.pk4 (297 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_textures_window01.pk4 (234 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_textures_stone_sculpted01.pk4 (312 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_textures_stone_natural01.pk4 (110 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_textures_stone_flat01.pk4 (271 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_textures_stone_cobblestones01.pk4 (192 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_textures_stone_brick01.pk4 (390 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_textures_sfx01.pk4 (41 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_textures_roof01.pk4 (65 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_textures_plaster01.pk4 (124 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_textures_paint_paper01.pk4 (37 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_textures_nature01.pk4 (218 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_textures_metal01.pk4 (360 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_textures_glass01.pk4 (36 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_textures_fabric01.pk4 (38 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_textures_door01.pk4 (155 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_textures_decals01.pk4 (317 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_textures_carpet01.pk4 (71 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_textures_base01.pk4 (323 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_standalone.pk4 (4 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_sound_vocals_decls01.pk4 (25 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_sound_vocals07.pk4 (1104 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_sound_vocals06.pk4 (680 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_sound_vocals05.pk4 (128 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_sound_vocals04.pk4 (2337 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_sound_vocals03.pk4 (739 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_sound_vocals02.pk4 (1292 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_sound_vocals01.pk4 (82 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_sound_sfx02.pk4 (596 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_sound_sfx01.pk4 (882 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_sound_ambient_decls01.pk4 (8 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_sound_ambient03.pk4 (24 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_sound_ambient02.pk4 (151 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_sound_ambient01.pk4 (205 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_prefabs01.pk4 (544 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_player01.pk4 (123 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_models_decls01.pk4 (89 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_models02.pk4 (1809 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_models01.pk4 (1679 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_gui_credits01.pk4 (49 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_gui01.pk4 (667 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_game02.pk4 (2 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_game01.pk4 (2 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_fonts01.pk4 (696 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_env01.pk4 (98 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_defs01.pk4 (169 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_base01.pk4 (149 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_ai_steambots01.pk4 (24 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_ai_monsters_spiders01.pk4 (82 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_ai_humanoid_undead01.pk4 (50 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_ai_humanoid_townsfolk01.pk4 (79 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_ai_humanoid_pagans01.pk4 (10 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_ai_humanoid_nobles01.pk4 (49 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_ai_humanoid_mages01.pk4 (7 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_ai_humanoid_heads01.pk4 (69 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_ai_humanoid_guards01.pk4 (313 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_ai_humanoid_females01.pk4 (155 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_ai_humanoid_builders01.pk4 (87 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_ai_base01.pk4 (8 files) D:\Games\darkmod\tdm_ai_animals01.pk4 (80 files) File System Initialized. -------------------------------------- ----- Initializing Decls ----- ------------------------------ ------- Initializing renderSystem -------- using ARB renderSystem renderSystem initialized. -------------------------------------- I18N: SetLanguage: 'english'. 6. Here's a condump after a quicksave, then the quickload surprisingly/fortunately didn't crash, but the seeds came back black/cubes, so I did another condump, then the same quickload crashed. Before trying to contact folks, since it seems to involve both the SEED system and save/load, does this point more toward one or the other? Warning, LONG logfile within spoiler tags:
  7. Did you already try this: http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/15366-thedarkmodx86-black-screen/
  8. From http://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=SEED_-_Known_bugs#v1.03_bugs This happens under TDM 2.0 sadly. I have no problems with SEEDs that use models. However a SEED that had func_static sources exhibits that exact behavior. It crashes using quickload, load saved game, or when the game tries to load the statistics at the end of mission. You can reload TDM and access the same once per session however. The objects also don't show up properly post save if you reload TDM, they show up as black cubes instead.
  9. Hi there ^^ After launching thedarkmod.x86, i get a complete (and sometimes partly) Black Screen on openSUSE 12.3 (Updated)
  10. Including the training mission, most of them just return to the objectives screen after the loading bar is full or just hang on the load screen. St Lucia on the other hand says to press "Attack" to start, which is Left Mouse button but nothing happens. Tried pressing all the keys and nothing happens. So far this is just fancy front end where nothing happens. 11. I tried making a thumb-drive upgrade to 1.08 to 2.00 for a friend this evening and encountered this problem again too. Going to Win 7 compatibility did not help. I was able to start the mod using the following steps: 1) Delete Darkmod.cfg 2) Delete gamex86.dll 3) Double click TheDarkMod.exe 4) Black screen is shown 5) hit Alt + Enter to go into Windows mode Now I had a nice little 640x480 TDM which I could scale to higher resolutions. You can shortcut this process by changing: seta r_fullscreen "1" to seta r_fullscreen "0" in Darkmod.cfg and see if it renders.
  12. Alright so I tried a few things out during the last few days, but I still can't figure out how to make this game run... I got the latest driver and I've tried running it in Win7 compatibility mode, as well as running it as admin. I finally got the game log file by blindly going to the console and typing just what you said, here's the link http://pastie.org/private/khjeat5wvdpqkdwrhtrheq The weird part is that I got the game to run once, it just happened randomly after a restart. I proceeded to change the resolution after which it restarted fine as well. I also changed another graphic setting, I think it was the details and tried restarting it and now it doesn't work anymore. Its back to the black screen with the menu music in the background. In conclusion, I still haven't played a single minute
  13. I tried to download "The Builders Blocks" just now (in game). When I entered the available Missions view it had downloaded "Crystal Grave v2.1" instead. Builders block is gone from the missions in the online mission archive. Crystal Grave is still there. When I check for more information (mission details) on Crystal Grave it gives me black screenshots.. Somethings off here me thinks... Enjoying the mod though, Cheers...
  14. Hey i tried going into the console, but nothing changed the screen was still just black with the menu music in the background. When I press the windows key i can see the menu; however I cant do anything so I have to revert to the task manager to close the program. I have tried every possible compatibility. I forgot to mention this initially, but my os is 64 bit. Any other ideas?
  15. Hey guys I just installed TDM for the first time, after seeing it released as a standalone game. I am running Win 8.1 on an older pavilion g7 hp laptop with intel hd graphics and an i3 core. At first the game seemed to work, I was able to get to the main menu and even change the resolution settings. However as soon as I tried restarting the game to make the changes happen, it returned to leave me with a black screen. Just to reiterate: when I start the game now, the screen turns black, the resolution of the screen changes to 640x480 and a few seconds in I can hear the menu music and the scroll-over sounds of the buttons. I can only quit by using the Taskmanager. I tried all sorts of compatibility settings and I am running the game as administrator. in addition, I have already deleted the .ini and cfg files to let the updater download newer versions, to no avail. I appreciate any help I can get, because I really want to play TDM!
  16. Hello, I'm trying to install The Dark Mod on a Toshiba P200 running Linux Debian/Jessie. I have followed wiki pages and read the FAQ. I don't know where is my mistake. When I launch ./thedarkmod.x86, I only obtain a black screen. To install The Dark Mod, I have created .doom3/darkmod in my home directory. I have downloaded doom3-linux-1.3.1.1304.x86.run to install doom3 (in default directory /usr/local/games/domm3). I have checked that doom3 runs fine. I can lauch doom3 but as I don't have serial number, it stops with a dialog and ask for a serial number. I have downloaded The Dark Mod in .doom3/darkmod with tdm_update. In FAQ, I have seen that some graphic card do not like compressed textures. Thus, I have modified .doom3/darkmod/Darkmod.cfg to add : set r_mode "-1" set r_customwidth "1440" set r_customheight "900" seta r_aspectratio "2" seta image_usePrecompressedTextures "1" seta image_useNormalCompression "2" seta image_useAllFormats "1" seta image_useCompression "0" seta image_preload "1" but it doesn't work as expected. When I redirect TDM output in a file, I obtain : TDM 2.00 #5890 linux-x86 Oct 5 2013 11:41:11 found interface lo - loopback found interface eth0 - 192.168.0.4/255.255.255.0 Found Intel CPU with Hyper-Threading enabled, features: MMX SSE SSE2 SSE3 CMOV tdm using generic code for SIMD processing. ------ Initializing File System ------ Current search path: /home/bertrand/.doom3/darkmod/ /home/bertrand/.doom3/darkmod/tdm_textures_wood01.pk4 (297 files) /home/bertrand/.doom3/darkmod/tdm_textures_window01.pk4 (234 files) /home/bertrand/.doom3/darkmod/tdm_textures_stone_sculpted01.pk4 (312 files) /home/bertrand/.doom3/darkmod/tdm_textures_stone_natural01.pk4 (110 files) /home/bertrand/.doom3/darkmod/tdm_textures_stone_flat01.pk4 (271 files) /home/bertrand/.doom3/darkmod/tdm_textures_stone_cobblestones01.pk4 (192 files) ... I suppose that trouble comes from : WARNING:Couldn't load image P200 contains : - Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU T7500@2.20GHz - RV630/M76 [Mobility Radeon HD 2600] VGA driver is radeon with direct rendering (I have checked with glxinfo | grep rendering). 17. I have similar issues unless I run TDM in the max resolution of my monitor (1920x1200). My former resolutions of 1440x900 and 1680x1050 both display improperly. The nvidia-settings utility used to have options for how full-screen programs were handled...whether to stretch or center the display with black borders, etc. That seems to have disappeared, so I can't test fixing it with that method. BTW. this has been going on for quite a while now and has nothing to do with TDM 2.0. I think it is mostly to do with changes to X, and not the nvidia driver specifically. I normally would not suggest running TDM in Wine. But, some games which act quirky in full screen can be controlled by forcing a graphics setting in winecfg. Example: I recently installed the game "Project IGI" in wine. I had some issues with display sometimes when launching the game full screen. It would sometimes display no graphics, but audio was fine. In winecfg, I made a config for IGI.exe with the following Graphics tab options set: Auto grab mouse = yes Allow the window manager... = yes Allow.... = yes Emulate a virtual desktop = yes and set to 640 x 480 The IGI game itself is set to run full screen in max resolution. Now the game launches to the main menu properly in a small window. Then it goes to fullscreen properly when missions are launched and back again when done. All display issues go away and the game (not) changing resolutions no longer re-sizes my plasma desktop panels.
  18. I had this problem - I got music but a black screen - on Ubuntu 12.04. I fixed it by doing: sudo apt-get install driconf Run driconf, and on the "Image Quality" tab, set "Enable ST3C texture compression even if software support is not available" to "Yes". Close driconf. Then, the menu worked. (Although it's still not setting the screen resolution back to the original resolution when it quits...) Hope this helps someone. Gerv
  19. Hey, the Dark Mod 2.0 has recently stopped working for me. Prior to this, I installed one of the missions in-game (don't remember which one) and during the installation process, the game crashed to desktop. The next time I tried to launch the game (the next day) all I got was a black screen for a short time as if the game would launch and then a crash to desktop, as well as the following crash log: I'm guessing that the easiest fix would be to reinstall but maybe this gives the guys who created this great mod some technical feedback that they might implement in a later patch (?). Or it helps someone with a similar problem ... Thanks in advance! - f0xX PS: I hope my spoilers work. Yep, they did!
  20. I guess it's also a problem with S3TC: Checking portable OpenGL extensions... v - using GL_ARB_multitexture v - using GL_ARB_texture_env_combine v - using GL_ARB_texture_cube_map v - using GL_ARB_texture_env_dot3 v - using GL_ARB_texture_env_add v - using GL_ARB_texture_non_power_of_two v - using GL_ARB_texture_compression X - GL_EXT_texture_compression_s3tc not found v - using GL_EXT_texture_filter_anisotropic maxTextureAnisotropy: 16.000000 v - using GL_EXT_texture_lod_bias v - using GL_EXT_texture3D v - using GL_EXT_stencil_wrap v - using glStencilOpSeparate X - GL_NV_register_combiners not found X - GL_ATI_fragment_shader not found X - GL_ATI_text_fragment_shader not found v - using GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object v - using GL_ARB_vertex_program v - using GL_ARB_fragment_program X - EXT_depth_bounds_test not found It's strange because my hardware/software actually supports S3TC. Could it be I would need to install libtxc_dxtn for 32bit? The solution from the FAQ doesn't work: seta image_usePrecompressedTextures "1" seta image_useNormalCompression "2" seta image_useAllFormats "1" seta image_useCompression "0" seta image_preload "1" Besides, I've got a completely black screen, not a "mostly" black screen.
  21. Hi, I've tried to run TDM-2.0 downloaded via torrent (not from TDM website, it wasn't available there at that time) on my gentoo-x64 box. I've fixed a relative path problem by renaming the game's folder to "darkmod", but now it prints lots of errors like "WARNING:Couldn't load image: guis/assets/mainmenu/buttons_loadsave/loadmission" on startup. It finds all files in the search path, but can't load the images. The menu screen is completely black. Sound works fine, I can hear the feedback when I hover the mouse over a button. I guess not being able to see anything has to do with those image loading failures, right? Any idea how I can solve them? I've deleted the Darkmod.cfg and re-ran the updater, but that didn't solve the problem.
  22. I've got an Nvidia GTX670 and I'm wondering what affect the Nvidia application settings via the Control Panel has on TDM render quality. In TDM everything is maxed - 16x AA and TA with the resolution set to my monitor's native 1440x900. I then did a few tests using the following settings on TheDarkMod.exe in the Nvidia Control Panel as follows: Default - nothing changed - everything left on "global setting" Only one setting changed - forced 32 CSAA - presumably this overrides the 16x setting in game All application settings overridden and set to their max I took a screenshot from a saved game on each setting and zoomed in 200% so you can see better what's going on (zoom out to 50% in your browser to see the images to original scale). Look to the far right of the image to see the biggest differences. Results are shown here: It's subjective but my feeling is that either the default setting or 32CSAA gives the best results while everything maxed looking the most rough. If you keep your eye on the lower edge of the black step, you can see jagged black and white edges on the maxed settings. Perhaps the forced AA and TA isn't actually working for some reason even though we've told it to max. The 32CSAA setting appears to smoothen everything overall while losing detail which you may or may not prefer on the whole. I may need to play with default and 32CSAA to get a feel for them before deciding which I prefer.
  23. Checked Nvidia control panel, nothing looks forced, things are left up to applications. The updater was crashing instantly so I tried a fresh copy of the game, updated, same problem in the game even with default in-game settings. I can get one or two 1 frame flashes on the pre-mission screen, then just black. If I can find any solutions on my own by messing with things, I'll post it.Found the problem (sort of). Alberic's Curse mission was causing the problem. Other missions work fine, but the pre-mission menu for that one mission causes a black screen. No idea why, I'll try uninstalling it and re-downloading it.
  24. When I first started with TDM 1.8, particle emitters were emitting black cubes. It got fixed. Now I'm on TDM 2.0, I've got the black cubes again. I've searched the forum and cannot find what I did to fix it the first time (a post by OldJim, I believe). It was certainly something very simple, but my memory has failed me. Any suggestions? EDIT: Ah - I did find the old solution, which was to delete and reinstall Doom3. As Doom3 has now gone from my system, I don't think that's going to work this time.
  25. It's the normalmaps which are the big hit. They are RGBA, the combination of image_useNormalCompression 2 and image_useCompression 1 will mean that at load time they are converted from RGBA->DXT5 with the swizzle, which is very heavy computationally (could be lightened a bit if we borrowed some code from amd). image_useNormalCompression 2 is however required as there are a _few_ DDS files for normalmaps, and without it they are either flat or black, depending on magic that I can't quite remember. TDM however does have 99% of the diffuse/specular textures as DDS, so no harm there.
