  1. Nevermind, it's always the easiest solution that occurs to one last. I set the windows resolution to 1920x1080, which centers the screen on the 32:9 Samsung and TDM then is also centered with black bars.
  2. I was finally able to fix my Black Screen problem. I had tried all the solutions listed in this thread but I still wasn't able to get TDM to work without the dreaded Black Screen so I decided to improvise and combine a couple of things that other people had found successful. This is exactly what I did: I renamed my Doom 3 directory to Doom3. Installed the torrent version of TDM and installed the 1.3.1.1304 patch. Launched TDM but didn't install the training mission nor any other mission instead I went directly into the "Settings" and changed my video settings. I then quit the game completely and then relaunched TDM and that's when I encountered the Black Screen so I quit the game (Alt+F4). I then went into my darkmod folder and deleted the "gamex86.dll" file and the "doomconfig.cfg" file. Launched TDM again and it worked fine. Note: I'm not sure if renaming my Doom 3 directory to Doom3 really helped but I noticed that someone else had tried this and I noticed that some of the documentation referenced Doom3 not Doom 3. Additionally, I didn't install the training mission or any other mission because on a previous attempt to fix the Black Screen problem I had installed the training mission to initiate the Black Screen and then I ended up having to delete the training mission and any files associated with that mission in order to get TDM to work. I just found it was simpler to initiate the Black Screen by going directly into the "Settings" and making some video changes. I'd hazard a guess that you could fix the Black Screen problem by just going in and deleting the "gamex86.dll" file and the "doomconfig.cfg" file from your darkmod folder but I'm too tired of messing around with this thing to test out that theory. I hope this information is helpful to someone.
  3. If so, then run the tdm-updater (and click "continue"), apostrophe. (because the updater checks the data for maingamedata-corruption. And if there corruption is detected, the updater downloads the original file) I thought that gray screens are opengl loadingscreens, so an opengl video-issue-thingy. -edit- But as a test I renamed tdm_gui01.pk4 to something else (simulating incomplete download). As result i got a black screen and a "invalid gui" error on top. and if i remove some binary codelines of the zip (simulating data corruption), i get a black screen. So i think still, its a video issue.
  4. Hi. I've been searching around for help and I've found some similar reports but no solutions. I downloaded TDM yesterday. First time I tried to run it: The game went into fullscreen mode, and my desktop (KDE) was "kind of" showing on the screen- most of the screen was black but a small section of my desktop was all zoomed in and distorted. I could hear the TDM menu options click as I hovered my mouse over them, but could not see any part of the main menu.Googled, someone said to change resolution in the config. So I set r_customWidth and r_customHeight (2560x1440). Saved the config and ran the game.. it worked! I could see the main menu, and everything seemed to be working. From here, I exited because I wasn't ready to play, just wanted to get it working. As soon as I exited, my desktop resolution changed to some ultra-low res zoomed in mode in 4:3 aspect ratio (I think). My desktop was being displayed letterboxed at like 320x240 and zoomed in, and I could pan around my desktop by moving the cursor to the edges. I had to reboot to fix this. Now when I try going into the game, I just get a black screen with a desktop cursor.. no main menu sounds and tilde->Exit doesn't work, I think at this point I was still interacting with the desktop, not the game. I don't think the game was actually even open.. it just jacks up my resolution and turns the screen black. Had to reboot again to fix it. I'm at a loss. I've found an old post where one of the devs said to set r_mode to -1, which I tried.. and nothing happens. The game opens and immediately exits. What do I have to do to get this game to actually run?
  5. Thank nbhor1more - I've tried the stuff mentioned in guru3d forums and also spoken with Nvidia about the issue - they've no idea... Ended up fixing the illustrator / photoshop stuff myself while Nahoor was reading the manual... I'll try out the colour depth thing - there's definitely some weird lights that flash up every now and then, in older games. The HDR thing oughtn't be an issue... Getting screen tearing scrolling up and down in browsers or pdfs. Something's definitely weird... Can't figure why stuff is fine in windowed, but not fullscreen. At least black is black, white is white, RGB is RGB, by my eye... Shame about the games. // i think i just made it worse... it's like the light at the end of the tunnel...
  6. Thanks for that. Yeah I figured it was coming from the monitor, as if it can't display the output from the PC then it wouldn't be able to display any message from it too, but for those who just get a black screen & music this might help. And apologies for putting this thread in the wrong forum, thanks for shifting it, whoever it was
  7. Hi all, I just put the 64 bit version of TDM on my machine running Zorin 15.2, I figured it's based on Ubuntu so it should be OK When I ran thedarkmod.x64 I got the intro music playing & a black screen with a pop up saying - I couldn't stop TDM & had to blip the power button to get the system to shut down. So I dug around a bit on my old windows system that ran TDM on the same monitor & found the following lines in Darkmod.cfg seta r_customHeight "1080" seta r_customWidth "1920" on the Linux system they were seta r_customHeight "600" seta r_customWidth "800" So I changed the figures to match the old windows system & tried again & it worked the training mission loads nicely I couldn't find any setting for 60hz, but as it seems to work I'm fine So I'm posting this in case anyone else has a similar issue
  8. freyk, I performed the following from the link you noted: sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386 sudo apt-get install libc6:i386 libstdc++6:i386 libx11-6:i386 libxext6:i386 libxxf86vm1:i386 libpng12-0:i386 libasound2-plugins:i386 libgl1-mesa-dri:i386 libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-glx:i386 libglapi-mesa:i386 libglu1-mesa:i386 wget unzip sudo mkdir -p /usr/share/games/darkmod sudo chown -R nobody:users /usr/share/games/darkmod sudo chmod uga+w /usr/share/games/darkmod exitI moved all of my darkmod files to the new directory (which makes sense), reran 'tdm_update.linux', made 'thedarkmod.x86' executable, and tried to run it again. Again, black screens, which were mirroring each other when I exited the program. I changed the darkmod.cfg as shown in my first post, and ran 'thedarkmod.x86' again. This time, a black window. Here is my new console dump: Any thoughts?
  9. Interestingly, I don't see the problem where Grayman showed it in the training mission. But I see completely unlit pieces of walls behind "Keys and Lockpicks" and "Gamma and Brightness" doors. UPDATE: Doing vid_restart fixes those problematic sections, but breaks different places: they become completely black so that even lantern does not help. This is accompanied with GL_INVALID_OPERATION error spamming in console. I guess vid_restart is broken for a long time already, so no surprise here.
  10. I am seeing the same issue in New Job mission, at the very beginning. Some sections of the floor are totally black, unless I enable a lantern (which lights them). Looks so weird, like if the world is partially disintegrated. Here is the video. Attached config file and console. Darkmod.cfg qconsole.log
  11. I updated SVN to see if I could confirm the problem, but when I try running the game all I see is a black screen. I can hear the music and the sounds of the options, but can't see anything, even when trying to pull down the console.
  12. It looks like it's the heat haze, and not smoke particles, that's showing the problem. Okay on 2.07 hotfix. Black on SVN Hardware is NVIDIA GeForce GTX960. CHecking for latest drivers ...
  13. Sorry, I don't know where to look. Here's a screenshot with your .cfg (minus gamma/brightness) Do particles turn black for you? What is your video card? Are you on the latest driver?
  14. Doom 3 \ TDM's affinity for low color saturation aesthetics or even black and white shader filters... Means that red-cyan glasses would probably work better for us than with other games...
  15. Solved (sort of)! There is evidently a minor bug in the way skybox tdm_sky_starry1 works with portal sky. The somewhat different tdm_sky_starry2 doesn't suffer it. The bug is not typically visible due to ground structures and clutter. To reproduce the problem: 1) Start a new project, with a hollow box as a room (e.g., 512 units per side) 2) Texture the sides with portal sky, except give the floor a typical (not too dark) texture. 3) Outside the room, create prefab nature/skybox/tdm_sky_starry1.pfb 4) In the room centroid, create entity Lights/sources/atdm_ambient_world. As usual, extend its scope to all the room. 5) For easy bug detection, change its colour spawnarg to be something too bright, e.g., RGB(255,255,255). 6) Set the player start, then save, dmap, run. 7) Run the player around the floor perimeter, with the black sky to the player's left, and the player viewing the floor. As you move the player around, look for a small square in the lower-left corner of the screen, when that corner is over the portal sky texture. It's as if it's the view of a high-contrast security camera (attached to the player's chin?)
  16. The luminance refer's to how bright the monitor is, if a monitor has a cd/M2 of 300 and a black point of 0.3 the contract ratio would be very good. But that would be a false advertising, because they manufacturer would using a insanely high brightness level to cover up the fact of a crap black level. And this is compounded by the fact that most users would only have the Luminance set to half that. 0.32 isnt that good, my Nec's have a Bp level of 0.3 and if you google me, ttlg and monitors you'll see why - - http://www.ttlg.com/...ad.php?t=122056 - http://www.ttlg.com/...ad.php?t=124407 What I/we should be aiming for is a max of 0.18-0.2 for mainstream monitors at the £100-150 mark. There are AMVA/APVA monitors out there with Black levels of 0.04-0.05 that match those of a CRT monitor, and I was about to say "but so far they have noticable ghosting issue according to reviewers" but the BenQ GW2450HM seems to buck that trend - TfTCentral review. The BenQ is amazingly cheap for a 24" monitor and the spec @ £123, but then you see why... no adjustable stand, no usb ports and only a 2yr warranty. But on the plus side it has a matt AG coating, non-gloss bezel and doesn't look to bad either. So I could can two of these for the price I paid for the first one of my Nec's many moons ago at £246 for the pair. There are few problems as I see it, 1. my rig currently has a GTX670 and a core i5 2500k and is what most people would consider high'ish spec, but most games would struggle at 2560*1440 on even this set-up. That said I guess AA higher than 2x wont be required at such resolutions? 2. the prices of those monitors will be silly in the extreme, anything more than £250 will be taking the piss. 3. more importantly will the release of said monitors drop the price of the current crop of 1920*1080 monitors..?
  17. @nbohr1more: Thanks hugely. TDM 2.04 installed using your method. The install folder (F:\darkmod here) should pre-exist or the installer will baulk, in case anyone else tries it. Best to run it from there. "The Outpost" ran fine, except for a single audio-jarring crash once, near the start. Reloaded and finished. As you might expect with lower settings, torches could occasionally be seen through doors and doorframes, and a plume of black smoke crowned each one. Water surface was black, and sky was oddly mobile. Underwater was crazily magnified-ish. "A House Of Locked Secrets" gave up with same error at exactly the same point as before.

  19. Hello, everyone! I've done some searches in the forums, and looked in the troubleshooting on the wiki, but there's a problem that's been in Dark Mod for the past version or two that's now prevalent enough for me to log in and report. Not sure if it's an issue with the Dark Mod itself or just one model of light that someone developed and is using in more and more missions, but it's driving me nuts. In several missions, electric lights are used and the tone the game has them emanate...well, I'm supposing it's supposed to be a soft hum, but instead it's a piercingly loud sine wave kind of tone, like you'd hear if you were taking a hearing aid test. It's literally deafening compared to the sounds in the rest of the game, and as more and more levels use this light, it's really cutting down on the levels I want to play. Since no other users seem to be reporting this, I'm wondering if it's because of my particular audio configuration. I am using EAX (through Creative ALchemy) on Windows 10 on a current Sound Blaster card, so I'm wondering if somehow the EAX processing is making the sound so damn loud. The latest mission that seems to have this sound is "In The Black." I'm including a screenshot of one of the lamps in question. This one is in kind of an odd spot on an internal balcony railing, and I can hear it buzzing from well down the hall in another room. There are other rooms that have several of these lamps as well. Is there any kind of tweaking I can do in the .pk4 files to silence this model of lamp until the issue is resolved? I really want to be able to play these missions without being deafened. I'm up for any kind of troubleshooting, or if you'd like me to make a recording from a USB mic of how loud the tone is compared to other sounds in the game to hear exactly what I'm experiencing.
  20. Goog Evening I just loaded Dark Mod like an hour ago, and got this Problem with the missing Textures or missing dynamic light not shure, and the Smoke being just black squares. And i know there is another thread with about the same Problem, but i have the 2.0 standalone and as far as i understood i dont have to install doom to play this one, so the other thread is not realy helping me either. I tried about every button in my settings and i followed the faq Textures are missing, screen mostly black Look into your darkmod.cfg inside your darkmod folder and check that the following settings are like shown below: seta image_usePrecompressedTextures "1" seta image_useNormalCompression "2" seta image_useAllFormats "1" seta image_useCompression "0" seta image_preload "1" even if im not sure thats the same problem. if that faq entry would be the right one, i looked in the DXDIAG, but there is no way to change anything in there. Textures are missing, shadows are pitch black Try disabling the AGP surface accelerator in DXDIAG. So non of the things i tried did change anything so please help me to fix this. MFG DamKoVosh Edit: P.S. the screen is much darker then its supposed to be, but the only thing u should see is some things having textures, while others havent.
  21. I have tried the Binary, the Wine, and the PlayonMac versions. Each one successfully installs, but when I start the .app the programs runs for a second and shuts down. In the Wine version, the game would go to a black screen with no sound and then shut down. Also I cannot find the darkmod.cfg file in any of the versions that I attempted to run. I will try the PlayonMac version again.
  22. Thank you very much, 32 bit bit TDM launches and works fine, but for some reason when launching an FM there is no visible light sources from torches/lamps (probably I need to fiddle around with darkmod.cfg or something else because I remember I had this issue with previous versions of TDM on this laptop in the past). TDM 64 bit shows black screen and still does not work, which leads to a crash in a few seconds. I did not have time up to the end of the week but if it is still of any use I will provide tomorrow gconsole.log as you requested.
  23. I force installed AMD drivers on a laptop years ago when Quake Wars came out. Prior to the forced install, the game played with mostly black textures and stuttered. After, all textures displayed properly and the fps increased substantially.
  24. Full screen. Just tried running in windowed by changing the Darkmod.cfg setting. Still showing black screen with TDM mouse. I've got this version originally by updating from 2.06 to 2.07. The result was the same as now. Then I deleted all files except fms folder and downloaded the updater again from www.thedarkmod.com There are no subdirectories except fms and screenshots (which I deleted when I reinstalled TDM so now I only have missionshots folder inside fms and no screenshots folder anymore). I'll try reinstalling again and report back. qqq.txt
  25. So I recently updated to 2.07, one thing I noticed is that when i'm ingame now the 3d window is only a small window. I thought this was quite strange and maybe somehow a problem with the mission I was working on so I booted up an already released working on 2.06 mission and had the same problem. Then I thought well maybe the issue is that I updated from 2.06 to 2.07, maybe a fresh install will solve this problem. I downloaded a brand new fresh version of 2.07 and i'm having the exact same problem as before. The only settings I changed in the menu is that the screen size was reduced from 1920x1080 down to 1280x720 and "Fullscreen" to "no". This is the exact setup i've run for years now without any problems, however whenever I click the maximize window button on 2.07 with those settings, on a fresh install the screen does this: That 3d window in the bottom allows me to move around but for whatever reason the rest of the screen is just a static image of either the main screen menu or it's entirely black. If I have the window set to the regular size it looks fine, but as soon as I click the maximize button on the window, rather than scaling the 3d screen upto whatever it needs to be, it stays at the 1280x720 and the rest of the resolution is just a static image. So to put simply if you want to replicate this bug. 1- Load any mission 2- Set the resolution to 1280x720 3- Set fullscreen to no 4- Restart the game 5- Load the mission 6- Click the maximize button on the window If I change the resolution to 1920x1080 (my monitors default resolution) and then click maximize there are no issues, and running the game in fullscreen works fine too. This isn't a deal breaker bug, but just something new I noticed with the new version and thought it should be brought to your attention. Perhaps there are other mechanics tied into this that might cause problems.
