So, what are you working on right now?

That is certainly a valid stance.

My only concern is the following scenario:

1) Terrific mapper x creates an unbelievably good looking map portion such that many don't even believe it's running in Doom 3 or TDM.

2) Mapper x demonstrates that it is really an FM

Do we wait for this mapper to finish this map to show-off the "Potential" of TDM as a platform, or do we show-off this work early (WIP) to let folks know right now that TDM has tons of potential?

Of course, the worst case scenarios are:

1) A WIP shot that looks great but is well outside acceptable performance.

2) An ugly looking WIP shot with all kinds of mapper error.

The benefits of showing what the mod "is capable of" still seems to fit the spirit of promotion.

The logic of promotion via screen-shot is kinda broken for a mod with such a sophisticate game-play mechanic though...

(And it's probably a contributory factor for those "why dontcha switch to engine x" threads...)

I think we have enough FMs made that we could "feature" existing FMs on the moddb site with new screenshots, and it's still news.

That rotating lighthouse is pretty cool. I love to see an actual light rushing across the landscape.

Yep.

Adding screens is one of the easiest (for me) and fastest ways to boost Moddb ratings and there's enough missions to keep going with that methodology. :)

That is also the problem of entire game promotion for a few years now. Pretty screenshots, but is the game really any good? Screenshots don't show sound, animation etc etc. Lookily we have youtube now, that at least makes it more than a static image.

yeah, I think a new "latest video" on moddb that doesn't show guys playing cards might be in order as well. Its cool and everything, but old now. maybe another new video something that shows "if the game is any good".... with zombies.

Why not have the best of both world? Zombies playing cards! B)

Seriously,

1) WIP screenshots are perfectly fine. Everyone is doing it and it builds anticipation.

2) Zombies are perfectly fine. Find a good-looking zombie segment from a fan mission (I'd use the mines from The Rift), record it, upload it, see the votes roll in. Undead missions can be great, enjoyable missions. Bonehoard in Thief was fantastic; RttC is rightfully regarded as a major accomplishment of level design.

Well, you show WIP until you have something real to show. We are in released state now and the development of FMs is completely independent of TDM. Needless to say, errors on screenshots are perceived very critically by a modding community. We on the contrary see the beauty in every screenshot, because we know what can potentially come out of it. Without wanting to step on anybody's toes here, but I bet one could find negative points on each and everyone of those WIP screenshots in this thread.

My opinion: If you're interested in the progress of TDM, you come here or read the newsitems. If you want to learn about what TDM is etc. you google and land either on our moddb site or on thedarkmod.com. Both should contain perfectly amazing images to lure more players into this community. More players => more mappers => more FMs !!! B)

But well, maybe as a compromise, you could sort-out the images with eye-catching errors and clearly state on the images that you do upload in the end, that they are just WIP.

I like what you do with all those interviews and reports by the way. That's good merchandise!

Xarg, I have a laptop with a Geforce 8400GS and a mobile core2duo 2.66, that is low enough to be considered low spec and is what i benchmark all my fm's on and I also do voice work. So if you need a stand in for your chap I am happy to help.

Since the comment was related to zombie mission, I think Melan was referring to the Return to the Cathedral OM, not Return to the City. :)

Pesky acronyms! Besides, if I were truly that immodest, the level I would bring up would be Disorientation.

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
