So, what are you working on right now?

use a custom caulk texture with heathaze applied...? now thats a cool invisibility cloak.

edit: then again, the player wouldn't really see the effect unless the cloak(s) were put on some guards.... orrrrr... a ghost?

re-edit: ok thats a dumb idea too. putting caulk in front of an ai would not make it "invisible" to the player.

Texturing an AI with a heat-haze effect might make an interesting effect though.

I just gotta show this, I'm so pleased in the result. While working on Mandrasola I progressed to the part where I need to make the briefing.

I decided to tweak the original Sotha's Button Controlled Briefing (SoBuCoB) a bit and I think I brought it to the next level.

Version 2 of the briefing looks like this (shot taken from Mandrasola briefing, text smeared to avoid spoilers):

7817572.png

The briefing now uses 1024x1024 images, which it portrays on the whole screen, like in original thief games. There is a slow but stylish zoom-out effect, which halts after the image is fully visible. Also each image is slowly faded on top of the default swirling background, but now the images are almost fully opaque so that the swirl doesn't interfere with the art nor the text.

The text area is now neatly in the top giving perfect view and a dramatic effect on the pictures and leaving good space to read the text without the imagery interfering with it.

And the best of all? Harnessing this baby for Your FM is easy as pie: replace the original .dds images with your own and edit the .gui file so that you replace my briefing text with your own. Changing the briefing page count requires the mapper to comment out one line in the gui depending on what page should be the last one.

This briefing will be available for everyone as soon as I release Mandrasola.

It is good time to be FMA, huh? ;)

The vine effect is really good, Shadowhide!

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. But the seals held strong, and the few did triumph, and the doubters were lain into the foundations of the new sanctum. -- Collected letters of the Smith-in-Exile, Civitas Approved

working on making player drunk after some drinking

http://www.youtube.c...h?v=l3f6da363k0

I'm no narcotic specialist, but that looks like eating some mushrooms or LSD, rather than being drunk.

But pretty neat that you can make such effects, maybe write a wiki entry how to make those?

I think the effect seen in deus ex when drinking wine matches most closely with my own perceptions when I'm having a bar evening.

Alcohol intoxication might be simulated by using the pain-overlay that get shown when the player dies and making that black and white instead of red.

Same overlay with blue would signal player freezing to death and green poisoned. Just giving ideas out for free. :)

drunkness consists of things becoming slow and blurred.

lsd consists of people turning into dinosaurs or buildings talking to you, or the wall throbbing, or the world turning black and white and exploding in all directions, or looking at the world through a really distorting fish-eyed lens, or cockroaches crawling over everything, or spiders, or ants.

I'd rather try to use some blur. Apparently you won't be able to use motion blur, but you could use something like the underwater blur. I guess it would be best if the blur strength was a lot weaker in the center of the screen, so that you can still see what you're doing (Not sure though whether that's possible). Having blur all over the screen just tends to suck, as seen in many games.

sounds fun !

Proceed with caution!

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
