Install issue

Recommended Posts

Every time that I run TDM I am required to reinstall the Training mission in order to play it. Until I do so, none of my save games appear in the saves list. When I downloaded the torrent for TDM I followed the instructions by copying all the files and placing it into :\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\doom 3\darkmod

Here's what my directory looks like:

+---base
+---d3xp
| \---savegames
+---darkmod
| \---fms
| \---training_mission
| \---savegames
+---Docs
| +---D3XP
| | +---htm
| | \---images
| +---htm
| \---images
+---pb
| \---htm
\---training_mission
\---savegames

I did a search on this issue but didn't find any mention of a similar problem.

System Info:

XP SP3

Steam

Something isn't right here, though I don't see how it would cause you to have to reinstall the training mission every time so the saves would work. This is what it should look like:

+---darkmod
| +---fms
| | \---training_mission

The training_mission folder should be inside the fms folder, and there shouldn't be a savegames folder inside the darkmod folder. What I suggest you do is to delete the fms folder and run tdm_update.exe. It should create the fms folder and download the training mission again. If that doesn't fix it let us know.

I've deleted the FM folder and tried to run TDM updater but it closes down immediately without any message. I decided to re-download just the updater itself, yet to no avail. To see what might be happening I decided to run it from a cmd line and received this error:

I forgot to mention that I actually tried that before. However my actual temp directory is stored on a different drive so I cleared that out as well. After clearing it out the program ran for 30 seconds or so before exiting with another error or message (it disappeared too quickly to see it). The temp directory is now filled with the following files:

Get the fms folder from your torrent then. I really don't know why it's repeating the error as it hasn't done that before. The fms folder should have nothing more than

training_mission\training_mission.pk4

Delete the other training_mission folder and TDM will replace it when you start the game.

To test to see if this issue is restricted to the training mission I downloaded the other FMs and placed their pk4 files into the FMs folder. After installing, playing and saving the game I exited TDM and then restarted it. Unfortunately the same tomfoolery occurred, with a status of there being no FMs installed.

For some strange reason the FMs get installed into "D:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\doom 3", not "D:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\doom 3\darkmod\fms".

First make sure you are running tdmlauncher to run Dark Mod.

As said, all the FMs pk4s should be put directly into darkmod/fms

When run, Dark Mod creates FM folders inside fms, moves those pk4s into their appropriate folder and extracts some txt files, eg,

darkmod\fms\chalice\chalice.pk4, darkmod.txt etc.

When you select to 'install' one of these on the menu then DarkMod exits back to tdmlauncher, a new game folder is created in doom3 and the files copied over then you go back to the Dark Mod menus to actually play, eg,

doom3\chalice\chalice.pk4, darkmod.txt etc.

The above is how it should be. I suggest you exit Dark Mod, delete all the game folders eg, doom3\chalice etc. delete darkmod\currentfm.txt. You should now just have:

darkmod\fms\chalice etc.

darkmod\fms\training_mission

darkmod\fms\crown_of_penitence

darkmod\fms\outpost

Then try again.

As others wrote, that is actually how it should be. You put them into darkmod/fms, where tdmlauncher picks them up and puts them under "doom3".

As for the updater, would you be willing to test a new updater from us? I have an idea how to fix your temp folder problem, but we'd need you to run an updated updater (and greebo needs to compile it for you :)

Based on this response, I don't quite think you understand what is happening here.

twisty places a mission pk4 in \darkmod\fms and tdmlauncher.exe is creating a mission folder in the \darkmod folder instead of \darkmod\fms. An extra \savegame folder is also being created in \darkmod instead of just in the mission folder under \doom 3. Look at the folder hierarchy in the first post again.

The mission folder under darkmod is (AFAIK) not created and not needed by tdmlauncher. It should create the mission folder under doom3 (and put the savegame etc folder there, too).

So infact the directory structure looks okay:

doom3 -> training_mission -> savegames

as it should be. What is under "darkmod" is of no importance, the PK4 there can be in its own folder, or not.

The only problem I see is that starting the game seems not to pick up the relevant options so the mission folder is not used.

@twisty: Hm, do you use tdmlauncher to start TDM right?

What file does TDM use to set the current mission? If it's supposed to be under \darkmod then based on twisty's incorrect folder structure TDM may not be able to find it. Maybe?

The file is named "currentfm.txt" and it should be under "darkmod". Also there is a file called "dmargs.txt" which is used by tdmlauncher.exe.

Yes, I am using TDM Launcher. I am more than happy to try out the new version but will probably not have a lot of time to try it out throughout the following week as my sister and her husband have arrived from over east with their baby and the only practical room that we have to place his cot in is in my study room.

Thanks to everyone that has responded. I realise that you don't earn any money for any of this and am grateful for all of the effort that you have put into TDM.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
