Ghosting a Mission?

Ghosting is fine, but I must say: I disagree strongly with any notion that a ghosting a mission can include engine exploits (e.g. nudging). That's not achieving a successful ghost; that's using bugs to get around the rules in a piece of software.

Also, I like to attempt ghosts, but it's tough to have the discipline when it hasn't been stated upfront, "This mission is ghostable!" Otherwise, you don't know if the FM author has made special allowances to permit such gameplay.

I never approach it from a 'special game mode' attitude. I do not set out to complete an FM according to some 'rules' to add an extra challenge. I approach it from the player character point of view. I immerse myself in the story and use the skills and common sense of the character. I have water arrows and the skill to use them. But too many would seem to attract attention (in my imagination even if in the game code they ignore them I don't care. In a real situation they might not bother about the odd one but it would not make sense if all the lights started going out.) Same with KOs and kills. I'm not interested in some ghosting rules nor in keeping under a 'quota'. As the player character I am not averse to KO-ing the odd guard - but I try to avoid it. Likewise, and even more so, I would only kill if it seemed necessary. It just seems to fit my concept of the player character. In that frame of mind I mostly finish without any KOs or kills and often without even the need for a water arrow. The 'ghosting' is an 'effect' of my attitude in player rather than something I feel I have to do.

Of course I might step outside that character in some situations: if an FM section is tedious or frustrating beyond a certain point for instance.

Yeah, I can fully agree with that, I think we take the same approach... except the player is always me in character, so I play as I would. I often have no qualms at all about taking out a guy who wants to help some "lordly" prick guard his ill-gotten gains -- as far as I'm concerned it's the lumpen helping the bourgee...

On the other hand I often don't steal or otherwise mess with certain others even if it causes me to not do the other "elite" thing, that being "all looting" (or what ever it's called).

What I don't like in both these regards (and I know it's only a game) is being (overly) limited on kills and/or KOs and, likewise, being forced to steal from the poor to fulfill a loot objective. (Just so you FM authors wanting to please me know) ;)

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
