is my sound broken?

Is it just my sound card (X-Fi Xtreme Gamer), or do the existing Dark Mod missions not make much use of ambient sound?

Example: in T2, you'd hear a loud, scary hum while standing in one room, then it would change to a different loud, scary hum when you stepped into another. In the Dark Mod missions, everything seems pretty quiet, at least on my end.

Edit: argh, I put this in the "I want to Help" section, thinking it was "Help".

There is a separate slider for ambient sound in the settings menu. What is yours set to?

Hard to say exactly. It's up to the author, just like with T2, to add ambient sounds. So some missions may have more or less.

I've got the same card and was having unbearably loud sound fx in Patently Dangerous, yet I could barely hear footsteps. And the sliders did almost nothing.

So I ended up messing with the Creative sound panel and think I adjusted it to 75% volume, and things were much better all around. But I had to close DarkMod, play with volume, go back in game, exit, play with volume...

Now I just installed Win7 so I gotta do it again.

Hey, do you have a creative card?

I've had the strangest issues with sound in doom3 and darkmod on my x-fi, similar to what you describe. Disabling EAX4 seemed to help, but disabling all the 3d cmss(in the x-fi panel) or whatever they call it seemed to fix everything right up. I havent enabled EAX4 again, but I expect it might work correctly now.

I think creative and id spent some time doing 'special' thingss with the sound, but in the end drivers and patches might have broken them (as I said, similar issues in vanilla d3, but less consistently)

Well, I just loaded the training mission, and realized it uses ambient sound more than whatever I was playing before (and whatever I was playing before that). :D So, I would NORMALLY be thinking I've got it figured out (the training mission just uses more ambient sound), but then there's Baddcog's issue (and Serpentine's, which is different still).

I don't know. Having this same issue again playing 'Living Expense'. Top of the stairs and BOOM, ear deafening music. Got me grabbing for my volume control and I can't hear anything else.

This is after I instaled W7 and I haven't messed with sound like I did before. Now I went into creative panel again and turned sound down like before, but it doesn't seem to have the same eefect. It turns all music down. Turned cssm3d off and turned of EAX in game and sound panel, no go.

I'm gonna uninstal this card tommorrow and instal my onboard drivers. This is killing me, not even fun to play when I instantly go deaf.

My ambient slider is at 0 and the other slider is 10. I really don't think the ambient slider works at all. It didn't seem to before and it doesn't seem to quite ambient noises now as it's at 0 and they are still deafening.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
