Win7: 5FPS less than in Windows XP

In Doom3/TDM the grafik performance in Win7 is worser than in Windows XP.

My system:

ATI Radeon HD3850 (PCIe)

AMD Athlon 64 3500+

Windows 7 32-bit Home Premium

I have the feeling, that maybe the CPU is to slow for my HD3850, because if I turn down the resolution from 1280x1024 to 640x480 I got only +10 FPS more (from 25FPS to 35FPS). Am I right with my assumption? Can a better CPU makes things better? I'm not expect a FPS boost of +20FPS, just maybe 5-10 FPS :D

There's deffinately more to a system than what you speced there.

How much ram do you have? 7 will take more ram (1 gig as opposed to 512 for XP I believe, turning off aero will probably help, etc...)

Also, Mobo speeds may be an issue.

-------------

but I looked up (quickly) your cpu and gpu, bth seem decent by all means, not like you are running low end/old stuff.

I'd actually think a more powerful GPU would help more with games, cpu might help more with overall performance.

I have a nvidia gts 8600 and I typically get 25 fps in TDM missions (1900x1400 no aa) so I just ordered a Radeon 5850 and I'm expecting that's gonna do major things for me. 1 gig ddr5 (instead of 512 ddr3 like I had and you have).

i went from vista 32 bit to 7 64 bit and didn't notice fps change but system requirements are similar, but my comp just runs much smoother overall.

Radeon 5850 eh? Happy waiting!! A friend of mine ordered his two and a half months ago and it still didn't arrive... ;D

PsymH, your system is already pretty low and Vista/7 costs an extra bit of performance. With a system like that, I'd just stick to Win XP until you upgrade your hardware. If you want to stick to your current setup, you can only try to lower your driversettings and ingame-details. And the most important thing is not to enable Catalyst AI... ;)

That setup, by any means, isn't necessarily very bad... If anything, I'd upgrade your CPU chipset. 2.2 ghz single-core is tolerable for AI-heavy games, but 2.2 ghz dual-core is much better. The HD3850 card is just fine. That'll run Crysis on med-high without a hitch.

I find it quite hard to judge performance in a lot of situations due to the nature of TDM. I'm using pretty old hardware and get decent enough performance on most maps that have been released so far.

It does seem like if anything your CPU would be the part letting you down the most. You could go the route of disabling unnecessary windows services, making sure you dont have too much stuff running in the background etc.

Another reason the source would be more than welcome is compiling on a modern compiler. iirc the linux builds are gcc 3.3 and windows were some old msvc. Would be interesting to see it compiled on the latest gcc or clang in a few months :)

Actually I had posted a thread awhile back (2 months? maybe) and was looking at vid cards at new egg, they had them but I hesitated, was a big purchase and was actually looking at a card in the $200 range. Then looked again and they were out. Looked again over the holidays and the 5850 was $30 off ($320 now) and they had them in stock :)

I decided since this was my upgrade for the year (plus a 250 g hd) I'd go ahead and buy a better card that will last longer.

It's in the mail, got the tracking code today, will see it Thursday. I love newegg.

Hmm? The TDM source? It's right here. :) And the mod is built in MSVC++ 2008 with /O2 set. If we have a performance problem, it's not because of the compiler we're using. :)

My games | Public Service Announcement: TDM is not set in the Thief universe. The city in which it takes place is not the City from Thief. The player character is not called Garrett. Any person who contradicts these facts will be subjected to disapproving stares.

  • 4 weeks later...

Windows 7 does not take 1gb of RAM. I actually find that it takes around 650mb - barely more than XP.

My XP Pro install can take up as little as 64 mb on my ancient laptop (whose total ram is 256mb). On my current PC, it allocates ~500 mb (out of 3.2 gb RAM) It's pretty deceptive, but it's just a ratio of total ram.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
