Offering prefabs for submission

I don't know...Fidcal keeps raising this question, but I don't know who is best qualified to answer it.

I guess whole buildings with interiors are not of much use to other authors, because everyone wants to create unique gameplay. Nice building facades on the contrary are always useful. Fidcal also once made a post about creating prefabs for TDM here in the editor's guild.

Evening

Where or how do I offer my prefabs for inclusion in TDM..?

here is the download link - http://www.filefront...88329/hotel.zip

the zip contains both a map and a prefab of the Hotel that was in my xmas mission.

;)

Hi Biker,

Thanks for the update. I added it to my own mission, however it is completely unrecognizable anymore, after 6 hours of revamping.

It made for a perfect template though!

We don't really have the manpower to manage some things as there are so many other things. Best I can think of is we have a holding website where any contributions of any type can be uploaded initially and quickly and available for download. From there, any brought to the attention of the Dark Mod team for inclusion with the release might be considered, assessed, transferred if OK.

I have a placeholder Dark Mod link page on my own website at fidcal.com. I guess they might go there. But I'm tired out tonight. Think about it in the morning.

OK, I'll try to find time to set up a quick and ugly holding downloads page on my website. This will not have an upload so it will still need me to transfer from a file share website such as rapidshare. Probably need say a description.txt file so I can just paste it by the download, maybe an image. And I'll probably start an uploads thread.

Quick fix: http://fidcal.com/DarkMod/downloads/

I'll try to find time to do a proper download page with info.

Would an easier short-term solution be for you to collect together any prefabs that people wish to submit and to bundle them into the next update of DR? Just trying to save you the work of setting up a download page :)

No because they need to be assessed. :) We don't want to include broken, conflicting, illegal, unsuitable, over-bloated or over-numerous (20 spiral stairs?) or even weak submissions that updaters will be forced to download onto their systems.. This holding download can be for any submissions not just prefabs. To assess new material might take two minutes or two weeks depending and we are seriously undermanned. By having a holding website it takes the pressure off. At least mappers can get the stuff rapidly this way.

[EDIT] Also of course, updates don't come out daily so even after acceptance it would have to wait for the next update.

[EDIT 2] Oh yeah, while I'm at it, I voted against including prefabs in the release as why should players download them? They are a separate mappers resource.

Well show us some pics, or better still pm with a copy of it :-)

The other good reason to have a dedicated page is that a good number of assets just won't be right for official inclusion, but they're still perfectly good assets that people may want to put into their FMs ... like an old-fashioned telephone, or a musket, or a different style of upright bass when we already have one, or innumerably more chairs, tables, and lamps. Maybe not good for official inclusion, but good to make available to mappers to put into their FMs individually (just like Thief2 custom assets for that matter). But some can be officially included.

And then there are things like gameplay tweaks, new voice sets, and other mods of the mod, which by definition are separate things a mapper or player would set up on their own individually, separate from the mod. These types of things are why a dedicated page for fan-contributions is a good idea.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
