Movies of All Time

Recommended Posts

I got a mini list:

Donnie Darko (Director's Cut): I always get sucked into media, be it games or movies with appropriate music that accompany them. Donnie Darko has a huge very low frequency score that is briliantly performed to appropriately give the correct feel of the movie throughout. I thought it was an interesting and easy to get into movie. The Director's Cut adds more of the effects and sounds that got me into the movie.

Trainspotting: Love this movie. I discovered it only a year or two ago despite its age. I've seen it about four times since. I can't quite put my finger on what I like about this movie other than in the end, the choice he makes reminds me of the choice I'd make :)

Apocalypse Now Directors Cut: This movie I absolutely loved. I've seen it more than ten times easily, and the directors cut is like 3 hours long! It's a very eerie movie that gradually progresses into the madness of one man's mind. Excellent and very smart (you may not notice the intelligence the first time around). IMO By far the best 'war' movie ever. However it is more about the 'experience' of war rather than the Vietnam war itself. Therefore I don't know if I'd even call it a war movie. This movie is such a magnificent piece of work I hope they NEVER make a sequel or anything near a sequel.

Cloverfield: The best movie I've ever seen in a theater. If you haven't seen it I recommend watching it on your computer with big headphones! Not much for rewatchability though.

In Bruges: Dark and dry humor but I thought it was funny and moving. Worth watching again IMO.

John Rambo: If you want to see gun shots and gore this is the movie for you. It exceeded my expectations and it was definitely 'cool' by my standards (despite Rambo's age!) :)

Sunshine: A really good sci-fi movie. The only thing I didn't like about this movie was the last little bit which I thought was a tad ridiculous. I wish they had chosen a different enemy/obstacle for the protagonist.

The Descent: As an adult I've grown somewhat de-sensitized to horror movies, this is the best I've seen in a couple years though.

Blade Runner: Classic Sci-Fi and a must see for Sci-Fi big wigs!

Worth checking out if your interested or bored:

Event Horizon

Alien

Aliens

Requiem for a Dream

The Onion Movie

There will be blood

Children of men

Shake hands with the Devil

The Deer Hunter

Almost Heros

I prefer Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas as my "see? Drugs are bad" movie. ;)

Uh yeah, Requiem for a dream is definitely a damn fine movie. I only watched it twice though because it always creeps me out! biggrin.gif

Yeah no doubt, the old ladie grinding her teeth. Ack, makes me cringe just thinking about it. Great movie but the teeth grinding just really bugs me for some reason. lol.

Fear and Lothing made you think they are bad? I thought it made them seem fun, I've experienced the strip during Dead week dosin'...

If you wanna see movies that make them seem bad watch Requiem (even prescription drugs - which usually aren't shown for what they really are) and Trainspotting.

I like Donnie Darko too, the sequel (about his sister grown up) was horrible though. They took the trippy effects and put them into a horrible movie. So bad in fact that if you hadn't seen Donnie you'd have no idea what in the hell was going on.

Communion, don't think I mentioned it. Christopher Walken in an abduction movie. Gotta see it.

Trainspotting bored me to hell actually. "Fear and Loathing" is funny, but to me it also rather feels like the movie is encouraging you to take drugs... :D I think even "96 hours" was more of "drugs are bad"-movie.

Baddcog: I have seen Requiem for a Dream, but I think it tries too hard and comes across as moralising in the end. Fear and Loathing starts out fun, but towards the middle, things slowly start to get less rosy and more screwed up and grim, until the scenes in the diner and the destroyed hotel room. It works better for me.

Sorry, but I've gotta digress back to vampire films once more ...

First of all, I'll say that one thing I hate about movies these days is that 99% of those dealing with science fiction or fantasy cannot help but render themselves unbelievably corny in just about every facet. In the case of vampire films, one usually sees at least one of the following: Gothic, vampire-exclusive night clubs; unnecessarily acrobatic fight scenes, usually involving swords and/or dual-wielded pistols; tight, and sexy leather outfits, accompanied with stylish shades (all jet black, of course); melodramatic disputes between vampire royalty ... (and this is all in addition to terrible acting, laughable scripts, and poor directing).

Let the Right One In: But I did a bit of research to see if I could actually find a good vampire film (in addition to the original, which I really enjoyed). Turns out, there's this 2008 Swedish film, "Let the Right One In", and it's very good. If I were to compare it to another recent and similar movie, Pan's Labrynth is the first that comes to mind. It has nothing similar to that unforunately all-too-common shit I've outlined above, and takes a pretty interesting approach to vampires. Without spoiling too much, I'll just say it's a romance that more or less addresses the struggles of vampirism (ie morale dilemmas, from several standpoints).

I'm not saying the film will blow you away, but if you enjoy vampire films at all, do not miss this one. It is just shy of being the best ("the best" being the original. Though, if we're harshly critiquing by today's standards, then I would most definitely say "Let the Right One In" is the best there is for vampire films).

Well...

"~Acrobatic fight scenes and tight sexy leather outfits~" are okay by me, if I'm going to be watching a vampire flick, but I get your point if you are an aficionado of the sub-genre.

But to join you in complaining about particulars... as for me, what I hate about sci-fi is that it is usually the most unscientific stuff you're likely to find.

It's kind of walks hand-in-hand with the way a lot of backward-"thinking" new-age/drop-out/hedonistic/anarchist muppets seem to have convinced themselves (and others) that they are leftists.

No.

Yer Not.

[/stepping down from soapbox]

PS. Requiem was unenjoyable, pointedly pointless, and just exhaustively overwrought, IMNHO.

PPS. Thanks for the recommend on Let The RightOne In; I'll give it a go if I can find it.

My taste is in general the same as Melan's, lots of credit to that, On Bergman, have you seen Fanny & Alexander? It is great.

I will probably get some shit for saying this, but I like David Lynch films, a real lot. I was completely amazed by Blue Velvet still several months after seeing it, excellent, excellent.

On horror, There's probably a bunch, but the only ones springing to mind at the moment are Cube and Alien, and The Shining. All of them excellent.

EDIT:Well, looks like a mix between Melan and a bunch of the films Woah posted.

wow, it seems most of you are into action, SF and horror movies...

Uh yeah, Requiem for a dream is definitely a damn fine movie. I only watched it twice though because it always creeps me out!

speaking about Darren Aaronofsky, get his older piece called "Pi" (you know, 3,14...) this was his masterpiece.

On horror, There's probably a bunch, but the only ones springing to mind at the moment are Cube and Alien, and The Shining. All of them excellent.

I´ll second The Shining. It´s realy disturbing. Only King´s adaptation worth watching IMHO. (+Alien =no comment)

But speaking of horrors, there are those japanese (and korean) movies, which, after watching it, buried all american horror movies deep into ground.

"Audition". See this if you want to know what i mean.

One of those "B movies celebration" worth watching was "Cigarette Burns" from Masters Of Horror series.

...not a horror fan myself, an old friend of mine allways plays this movies to get me hooked:laugh:

i personally prefer movies like "Pillow Book" by P. Greenaway.

Regarding Sci-Fi movies, i didn´t like Matrix so much, mainly because i´ve read, and liked Neuromancer, on which it´s based. I know it is not the same story, but the plot is weaker and kung-fu scenes are not my cup of tea. And, there is "eXistenZ" by David Cronenberg.:P

last days, i was overwhelmed by movie called "Repo! The genetic opera" not going to describe this to you, but this is the genre i never see before. Steampunk btw, along many more things. Just google it. Ogre of Skinny Puppy and Paris Hilton. Most recommended.

Big thanks to jdude for recommending "Prime". This movie blows my head off and left my brain burned smokin´.

Das Boot:

. :) U-boats are pretty much stealth war machines, so everyone here has a chance of appreciating it.

Festen: If you love tense drama then you owe it to yourself to watch this. Awesome. It's Christian's father's 60th birthday, and an extended family meet to celebrate, but Christian uses the gathering as a platform to challenge him over the recent death of his sister.

Seksmisja: Polish sci-fi about two guys who get frozen for half a decade and find that women have taken over the world. Men have died out and are seen as an inferior evolutionary stepping stone.

Stalker: Tarkovsky's masterpiece. Actually, all of Tarkovsky is worth watching in my opinion.

Ga, Ga, Glory to Heroes: Another amusing Polish sci-fi. A deep space penitentiary gets rid of its inmates by dumping them onto unknown worlds under the pretense of being ambassadors. The main character is greeted as a hero, but then has to commit a crime and be punished by having a huge metal stake plunged up his anus in order to cleanse society of its ills.

Tricks: Brilliant, laid back Polish drama. About a boy trying to get his dad back with his mum by using superstitious 'tricks'.

Titus: Insane cinematic adaptation of Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus. It was one of his earlier works, and was originally derided for being too grisly. Anthony Hopkins is incredible as the part of Titus, a Roman general who becomes the victim of a vicious grudge.

I'll leave it at that for now. I'll list my non obscure favourites:

Alien, Ghostbusters, Total Recall, Dark City, The Truman Show, Fight Club, The Game, Videodrome, The Fly, Invasion of the Bodysnatchers, Dead Man's Shoes, City of God, Wall Street, [trying to stop listing sci-fi now]

I'm going to check out your list :) I loved Das Boot too but I didn't really understand Stalker. I sort of lost interest in it after a while in the movie too. And to be honest, I still don't get what that movie was all about :P

Recently I have been getting more and more tired of steampunk, with the pompous goggles airships and enormous water boilers. It does nothing to me but feel childish and exaggerated. So steampunk cinema is far off from my current route.

Neb, you seem to have a love for the more brutal side of things, am I right? Some good ones listed there, but films about war and heroes don't suit me much, they often feel exaggerated.

I dunno if someone has mentioned it already, but the best B-Movie ever IMO was Peter Jackson's Braindead, which i think is retitled Dead-Alive in the states for some stupid reason. It was hilarious, It's so ridiculously over the top I couldn't stop laughing the whole way through. Its very gory, like i think it holds a record for the most blood used in a film ever, but it's a masterpiece of NZ cinema i think, much like Jackson's later work The Lord of the Rings.

I like some Australian films as well so I'd have to recommend Mad Max 2 (again retitled Road-Warrior in the states  ) and I also liked The Proposition alot too.

Das Boot: Yes, yes, and yes. U-boats are pretty much stealth war machines, so everyone here has a chance of appreciating it.

I second this movie; easily one of if not the best war movies ever made IMO.

I think it's one that you have to feel to understand. There are other films for me that I didn't get for the same reason.

I'm not really into the brutality, but if it comes with satire and dramatic depth then I'm interested. One thing that I'm actually always interested in finding though, is a great love story, but they're often either tacked onto something else or sold to women.

The only war film listed there is Das Boot, and to me it was far from heroic. I'm not convinced that the horror of being hunted by destroyers and bombarded with depth charges is really so exaggerated. Most of the elation that the characters feel is fleeting.

Here's a movie that I just like to watch (or parts of it, at least) now and then for laughs. I can't recommend it in its entirety, but there are some clips from it that are just priceless.

Night of the Lepus

I'm not going to summarize its plot, as one's unfamiliarity with it makes the following clip I uploaded of the movie all the more hilarious:

Lets revive this thread...

I watched a new movie out on dvd last night called Branded, though I don't think it's a movie I'll want to see again it was an amazing take on corporate branding of everything in our lives. I am so sick and tired of capitalism and corporate takeover of everything... But I live in the US, maybe outside the US it hasn't because as bad. Anyway, this movie really is brilliant imo.

Currently watching Stingray Sam, a space musical from 2009 on hulu. Cracking me up, Super cheesy horrible photoshop pics during a voice over explaining the goings on. I can't believe Les Claypool isn't in the credits, I can see Primus fans liking it. It has quite a bit of 'anti-commercialism' in it too ironically.

One planets economy was based on building rockets, then production was moved to a cheaper planet (because people were desperate for work) so the first planet became crime ridden at which time the old factories were turned into prisons and the former workers were now prison slave labor making rockets again...

Imagine a space cowboy lounge singer straight out of Monty Pythons Holy Grail.

I mentioned in the Thiefy movie thread The Sargasso Manuscript that I just watched.

https://www.youtube....h?v=NLpPjSQptco

It was fun. I like this kind of movie. It's plot is very twisty in time & also something of a puzzle if you really try to follow it.

I have movies that I keep on my HD, which I might not call "best ever" (maybe for some, depends on my mood), but more like, best for ritually rewatching a lot of times, or for watching with a friend that's never seen it before -- in short, movies good to keep saved on a HD (and it can evolve over time, and depends on things like how much HD space I'm ok taking up).

So right now it's: Casablanca, Clue, EuroTrip, Fandango, Match Point, Once Upon A Time in the West, Primer, Shaun of the Dead, Source Code, Spirited Away, Syriana, The Big Lebowski, The History Boys, The Hunt for Red October, The Princess Bride, The Prestige, Thirteen Days, & Moliere.

There are other movies like: 2001, Blade Runner, Mulholland Drive, Star Wars & Raiders of course, Fifth Element, Die Hard, etc, that I really like & appreciate as great movies, but I don't need to keep them saved to watch incessantly.

Edit: For Tarkovsky, my favorite is Solaris.

On the topic of old Soviet movies, another one I like is called Aelita: Queen of Mars (the red planet, of course; also on YouTube: https://www.youtube....h?v=qL6hG1erfFo), a silent movie set right during the new economic program, about a bored engineer that has a tumultuous domestic life & builds a rocket & travels to Mars. The trip to Mars itself is visually great, but there's also something very alien about Soviet life in that era too that I find their old movies such a curiosity.

Speaking of silent movies, I also just watched The Artist this last week. It's also a lot of fun. Really plays with movie history & that period.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Glad this thread got a bump; I'll just list the movies I've got on DVD: -

Saving Private Ryan

The Incredibles

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
(the first big-budget 'kung-fu' film I ever saw & still my favourite)

Children of Men

Apocalypto
(after horribly overdoing the slo-mo in Braveheart & Passion, Mel finally gets it right)

An American Werewolf in London

The Godfather 1-3
(but only watch the first two)

Die Hard 1-4
(dislike #2, but the others are good to great fun)

Twelve Monkeys

The Host
(Korean monster movie; the monster appears in full view, broad daylight about 15 minutes into the film and is
brilliant
)

This is Spinal Tap

The Pianist
(superb, and IMHO gives an insight into why Polanski grew up so strange)

Unforgiven
(an amazing story - nearly every action has consequences further down the line)(usually not that great)

Also have a few techno-thrillers (Hunt for Red October, Clear & Present Danger, Under Siege) but believe it or not, they're mainly for my 80-yr-old mum (in fact, she's the reason I bought the Die Hard quadrilogy - she loves 'em) :P

More recently, really enjoyed Source Code, and Thor was entertainingly mindless (while the Avengers film I ended up finding just irritatingly mindless).

Just watched Hell Raiser and wooow what a good splatter movie!! No virtual 3d stuff - only nice and realistic body paints, body fluids and other grimy stuff hehe :D

If someone knows more videos with a good plot and a nice amount of splatter (blood scene at least every 10 minutes!), well then let me know please! I need more! MORE! MOOOAAAR !!!

If you like the movie I can recommend you the band "Aborted" who combine very awesome musics with these very awesome two movies ;)

Two movies that I will never grow tired of, and I know this since I must've seen either one of them at least 40 times... It's gotten to the point where I can recite pretty much ever line after the other... :T

The Shawshank Redemption

and

The pirates of silicon valley

If you haven't seen one of them, or both. Do. They are both very, very good.
