Fan Mission: The Heart of Lone Salvation by Fidcal, Baddcog & Bikerdude (2010/04/02)

Strange bugs. Spontaneous deaths are known but inexplicable so far. Spontaneously going to somewhere that is not on their route is also inexplicable because he was still supposed to go to the same area. World terrain and even a model that are present in the original but absent from your game are even more strange and inexplicable (at least by me!) The player getting stuck is understandable in some situations and the bigger the mission the more likely it is that some places will be untested.

Wait, I'm curious. If you are talking about the area that houses all the junk piled in front of the door to the two-statues/ hidden-chest side of the garden? As far back as betaUno I was playing along and came through there only to find a dead fellow as well. Don't think he was "lord" anyone, though -- I actually thought he was Sam at first; an intentional part of the mystery...

Is this the area you are talking about? I wonder if all that loose junk is settling about and wiping people out? Sometimes these physics engine react quite violently, no?

Anyway.

That's not necessarily a bad guess. The AI and the player can certainly die from being kicked around by g-forces. I've accidentally killed a builder guard in Tears of Saint Lucia that way when

the big hammer on the scaffolding landed just so on his head

The footsteps are much better now, before the update it sounded like a horse was walking around trying to wake everybody up smile.gif

Actually I think it's fine the way the game is setup for foot steps. It makes logic sense, because back in those days it was peace and quite they had no traffic or dogs etc. When they wore those metal boats they would make enough noise to hear them from quite a distance. Have you ever been in the country at night or day and you can hear your neighbors talking 1 or 2 houses down the road, which are like almost half to a quarter mile away?

Gorgeous, eh?

There oughta be The First Annual TDM FM Awards Ceremony at the end of 2010.

One of the award categories could be "Most Gorgeous Room" (I'd see this one nominated, and I have another one I'm thinking of as well).

I never had a problem with everyone dieing unless I killed them, lol. The only thing I found strange so far I found a mangled corpse, which I thought was funny and odd. I guess one of the guards decided to tie him into a pretzel. LOL It happened to me someone I knocked out.

I'm getting the following error at the end of the hall in the basement, near where the tile floor hall is located. The error occurs just as I begin to hear the approaching footfalls of the guard -- not certain there's a connection, though. It's a game-killer for me. It's only a few seconds after my save spot. Sorry if this has already been pointed out; I don't have the time to go through the entire thread.

Superb level. It's way above and beyond anything I would've expected at this point. I'm impressed.

I also had the "FreeCurrentPVS: Invalid Handle" crash early on when i would try and reload. I backed up to an earlier save and everything was fine. Later on in the level I started having this error again, this time it would just happen during play. I understand that this is a code error though and not a problem with the map, although this was the first time I had ever encountered it.

Another strange thing I noticed was the way unconscious bodies would behave. Later on if I returned to an area on the far end of the map where I had lain a body, I would usually find it moved from where I had placed it, and it would often be contorted in an unnatural position (I just noticed that PranQster posted screen caps of this). Again, I understand this probably has nothing to do with the map, just thought I'd mention it. It does seem that the bigger and more complex the maps get, the more unstable they become.

Really great stuff though, Fidcal and Baddcog. Great design, story, secret areas, objectives, pretty much everything. If this is a glimpse into what a campaign would be like, I'll certainly be looking forward to it.

I'm really disappointed I couldn't load mission even in the low-end PC level. Game crashes and the error message runs too quickly to be copied. Something is missed, maybe a file is not found. After that there's no option to go back to menu except hitting 'esc'.

Pity - but there is a good chance we can get it working.

If you can get back to the menus then try the console (either the key above TAB and left of 1 or ... that key with Ctrl +Alt I think it is. You should see the error message.

Odds are that you just need your TDM updating because Heart needs version 1.01. This sometimes goes wrong. Run tdm_update again and make sure it says it is complete. If you still can't get it to work then try downloading TDM again by copying tdm_update to a spare temporary empty folder and run it there. Then move the file back to the darkmod folder.

You could also try binding a key to condump.

try typing in the console: bind F7 condump error.txt

and press F7 then exit the game, and check the Darkmod dir (and subdirs) for a text file called error.

I always assumed I'd taste like boot leather.

Finally got around to playing this mission, and I can only agree with all the praise - it is indeed a masterpiece. Good story, believable environment, perfect difficulty.

The many keys and readables were no problem at all, I was always fairly certain when a readable was "done", and then I'd just drop it off in my designated reading room...

A "D'oh!" moment:

I had spent about half an hour trying to get Sam Skeleton arranged so that he could be moved that last vertical bit, when I accidentally hit the use key and shouldered him! And then I remembered the warning about needing room to shoulder bodies... Never having met a skeleton before I just assumed that it was different and couldn't be shouldered.

Another fine mess I got myself into:

In the display room I shot a rope arrow into the tree trunk holding the heart, in order to get on top of the security cage (probably an avoid-mantling Thief reflex). Then, when I activated the device, the arrow kept the trunk from moving so the device would never stop and I was trapped in the cage...

Can't wait to see what Farrell will be up to next!

Never thought of that! That's the amazing thing about a virtual world is things can happen in ways that the author cannot anticipate. In fact I can't think of a solution anyway. Maybe a timer on the door then pull out the arrow...

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
