Rope Swing

LEGION

Recommended Posts

I played the Training Mission tonight and until the rope swing it was really cool! Very beautiful and better Thief-feeling than the first two Thief´s itself! (because of the perfect mantling and the Shadow-system, the lockpicking, the models, ... awesome!!)

But the rope-swing really frustrated me! It´s definitely not working!! Couldn´t get to the other canal side, and I tried nearly 100 times, okay, it were 25 times. I´m always slipping downside and the swing is very unstable and unpredictable! :(

Some tips to get over there? I don´t wanna use 'noclip'!! (not now)

Only press the swing button when it feels right, when your furthest back from your target. When you finally jump from the rope, look at the right direction, if you need mantling when getting there, dont let the jump button go while in the air.

Its a bit hard but you can also add momentum by swinging not only in your target direction but to opposite side as well. Push, turn,push,turn,push.. it work, you can even jump from rope to rope.

Find a nice wooden ceiling and practice. Maybe it just frustrates you that you'll fall in the water and has to climb all the way out to try again and that takes your attention from how it works.

Don't use any move controls except to position low on the rope. Face forward. Just tap the attack control in the middle or on the back swing to get a moderate swing going.

Note that you jump further than you think so don't try to get a massive swing that looks like it will carry you across when you let go. Instead, get a moderate swing then at the end use jump + forward and you kind of jump from that point. And yeah, keep holding jump to grasp what you are jumping to if needed.

Also, the amount of swing you get depends on how high (or low) on the rope you are. If you're lower down on the rope you get a better swing, but too low and you won't be able to make the jump since the other side of the canal is quite high up. You'll just have to judge it as well as learn when to press the attack button from practice.

If you want to do both a back-swing and a forward swing, you don't have to swing around with your mouse, you can either look forward and tap back when you press attack to swing backwards (but this has the disadvantage that you move slightly down the rope during the time you pressed back), or you can face sideways to the direciton you want to swing and hold the left and right buttons while pressing attack to swing side to side, then turn back forwards and jump when you're ready.

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
