Startpack

Posting an own thread as this is most likely is a problem with the startpack.

I've gone through the starpack tutorial ( http://modetwo.net/d...e#Purchase_Shop ) in order to create a purchaseable map for my mission.

I downloaded the startmap.pk4 to figure out how things are done. The packet contains a file called map_of.gui.

Is the file \guis\map_of.gui really supposed to be an empty file? I need to know the contents of this file to get the shop-purchaseable map to show it's contents when it is used.

Sorry Sotha - that is an error. I can't imagine how that became empty. This is what should be in the file. I'll fix the upload....

windowDef Desktop

{

rect 0,0,640,480

nocursor 1

windowDef background_map

{

rect 64,48, 512, 384

background "guis/assets/game_maps/map_of"

visible 1

}

// Required include for inventory map

#include "guis/readables/inventory_map.guicode"

}

The startmap is great! But it really needs an update :)

Apart from the empty guy, there is an armed noble who crashes the map. Also, the map should really show how to set up the location settings :)

Oh and I think "briefing.xd" must be renamed to "mission_briefing.xd" but I am not sure if this is already mentioned on the Wiki page. Which, by the way, could use some shortening to the essentials, I found it hard to follow these long-winded sentences (sorry :) If you want I can take care of the wiki page.

Otherwise I manged to turn it into my own little mission, which is just great! Thanx! :wub:

Yeah I know - it's one of many jobs to do. I would tend to rip out all the AI now because DR can show heads and maybe one day show voices so it's hardly worth trying to keep up with them. I redid the last startmap three times because of AI changes - added a spider room - removed the spider room - now spiders are working again. It's a headache. I had to redo every single AI at one time when they changed.

The xd file name doesn't matter technically - unless there is some non-techy reason I don't know about. Only the xdata header name itself is critical. For instance I include my briefing xdata within say one file: heart. xd with all the readables.

If you want to re-work the wiki article then one suggestion might be to split it up into several pages so it is more digestible with a summarising 'hub' page with the essentials. Most features are optional anyway so simply saying something like... if you want a game map go here... if you want a shop go here. I agree when I last updated it that it was daunting even to me!

      i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
      tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

      Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

      Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

      I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
      Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

      Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
