Technically sounds pretty good. The noise floor is low enough that even the quiet lines didn't get bad artifacts after noise removal.

To my ear, it sounds like she's too timid to do any shouting. Let her shout her angry lines (My voice actors all say it's quite therapeutic ), and you can babysit the levels.

If you're going to do post in Audacity, I'll cram some advice in some spoiler tags below.

First grab one line. Normalize it to 0 db. For equalization of a female voice, roll off frequencies below 120 hz (this will remove rumble, handling noise, some breath puffs, and some background noise). Do any extra noise reduction that you want.

GoldChocobos vocals have some light compression. (For Audacity's compressor, set the threshold around -7 db, noise floor to about -60 dB, and ratio to 2:1. Set Attack time to 100 ms, and release time to 1000 ms.) Don't worry if this amplifies inhales and exhales: that's all part of the performance. smile.gif

Finally, normalize it again. For shouting lines, I'd recommend -1 dB. For quieter lines, You can make it -6 or quieter (at your own discretion, coz every voice is different).

Hehe, we haven't got far enough in the script yet to reach so many of the angry lines :) But the next batch shall include those.

She was suprised to be called timid

I tested to test some of your advice but I couldn't change all the settings you mention. Perhaps an outdated Audacity version I have...after all I'm not that good at post editing so I would be grateful if someone could do that for me, if I just supply a huge file with all the lines one after another as the previous.

I feel my GF is improving voice acting vise but I want to hear some feedback before continuing. I want the audio to be as crisp as possible but it feels difficult without a studio and real time filters and a sound guy checking signals and levels in real time...

Feedback:

The voiceacting has certainly been upgraded now. Impressive, I'd say. Your closet training techniques seem to make voice acting skills to blossom.;) I've no complaints about audio quality either. You are doing a really nice job.

There were some lines which were said maybe too fast: "I can't see anyone now. Perhapseyhavgone."

I suppose I could do post in Cakewalk/SONAR, myself, too. At least we can get it into the game.

Don't get me wrong: I'm liking these lines so far. :) If ever you get the whole dang thing finished, save it as a (lossless) WAV and hand it off to Spring or me.

Good you like the progress!

Haha, yeah, it's taken some time for several reasons...

I use to export the whole lot into a OGG-file from Audacity. Are you saying WAV is a more lossless approach?

Mp3 and OGG are both lossy compressed audio files. Wav is not compressed at all, that's why the wav audiofile is so huge in size. I think the guys want to have the big lossless files around just in case some volumes or something else needs to be changed later. If they have the source good quality audiofiles to edit, the audio quality will not degrade.

If you provide only OGGs, and the audio files need to be edited later, the quality will drop.

I'm just curious because back in the days, when I first contacted Springheel about recording he wanted the files in ogg.

But it doesn't matter at all for me, if wav is better, I'll send the wav :)

When the time comes I'll make some editing myself first to remove occasional swedish cursing ;)

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
