Darkmod: Inspiration thread

Here's an excellent Documentary playlist on Medieval Towns, and life therein. Video quality

isn't the best, but as long as it's not fullscreen it's fine. Gives an interesting insight

into life in those times, and at the same time some interesting architecture.

Enjoy

So this is a polish website, just click on the main photo and then keep on clicking arrows on the sides of the screen. And just for the record, that's a flat! In Warsaw! You can buy it for 1.6 million zloty :D divide by 4 and you have roughly the euros.

Corrupt officials and the fat nobleman class gotta live somewhere, in the real world or our world alike.

Edit: They really looks like the interiors of our FMs too.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Concept art from Steven Messing. Saw this on Facebook today.

The middle woman in this pic, the one with the red dress, would be a perfect skin for a middle class woman AI in TDM. We don't

have any women of middle class. We have the lady, the prostitute (wench, rogue all same woman) we really do need a middle class

skin on an AI. Say take the lady AI and skin her as say a guildmasters wife, not as refined as a noble, but well above the peasants

in dress.

Found this interesting clip explaining how old manuscripts where/are made.

Fascinating, often wondered how this was done. Thanks heaps for that. :D

Buildings which are perfect in their own way: a chapel in Nurnberg.

Do we have any moldings like this where the wall changes just before the battlements? This would

make a great prefab building, especially since it has a man there for scale. I started to make it

but am stuck for those moldings.

Yes, we do have all the required textures. I am in fact thinking of incorporating the building into my current mission. Not as a prefab, though; it is too distinct for that.

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. Hum. I usually like DrK's shots, but I am not feeling it here, except maybe the second scene. It looks high-res, but also rather simplistic

Just had a thought--if anyone happens to find good clips of animations (either from games or RL) that would be suitable for TDM, that would be appreciated as inspiration. I'm trying to get back into animating and find I spend a lot of time trying to track down reference clips. I found a great one showing off all the animations in Skyrim, but would love to see others, especially of guards searching or things especially suitable to TDM.

Have you looked at the various KCD videos like this one

?

I don't have time to watch the whole 15 minutes...where are the actual animations?

How so, as I think all but the 3rd one are stunning. In fact the 2nd one looks very T4'esq.

It is boxy and rectangular, unlike previous Rocksbourg screenshots (which I liked). This boxiness, in turn, doesn't play along well with high-res. High-res textures and high-poly objects need more complex architecture and environmental clutter to support them. Here, in fact, high-res resources draw attention to the plainness of the architecture, making for a less stellar effect.

Also, I am not impressed by Thief 4's visuals either. It has expensive production values, but little visual imagination.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
