Alternative theories were propounded stating that the protruding eyes actually depict ancient glass goggles fitted on wooden cylindrical frame with leather mask that were used by ancient bronze smelters at the time. -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanxingdui (ancient inventor goggles?)

It's the little touches like all the strewn crap on the muddy streets, boards sticking out of walls, a set of lose and crumbling bricks, rounded bumpy edges on most things instead of hard right angles, rips in the wallpaper, etc., that pull a level up to realism.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

I live near the complex of a Pschiatric Hospital named Costiujeni in Chisinau.
It has a an impressive array of buildings reminaing from the end of the XIX-'th century and twin water towers built circa 1904. A despaired gasp of failed and much too late attempts at reform inside the falling Russian Empire.

Edited by Anderson

"I really perceive that vanity about which most men merely prate — the vanity of the human or temporal life. I live continually in a reverie of the future. I have no faith in human perfectibility. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active — not more happy — nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago. The result will never vary — and to suppose that it will, is to suppose that the foregone man has lived in vain — that the foregone time is but the rudiment of the future — that the myriads who have perished have not been upon equal footing with ourselves — nor are we with our posterity. I cannot agree to lose sight of man the individual, in man the mass."...

Recently I've gone through my inspiration folder again, which has become quite large over the years. Here are a few picks.

S0ClWkv.jpg

This one is an illustration of a Victorian house that could be considered an illustrated guide on Victorian inner decoration. Some things are sure: Victorian houses were incredibly cluttered and full of heavy furniture.

A Victorian doll house this time. For me the most interesting part is the bottom third showing a well done foyer.

Someone has inadvertently designed a Thief mission here. A large inn that's actually a stronghold of the Thieves' Guild. That sounds like a lot of fun.

A maritime set of inspiration and concepts that I added more recently. It's a fascinating theme to map, which I can only recommend.

Really good stuff Dragofer. The concept of Old Dollhouses for Interior and Exteriors. Here are some others I found:

Very good idea, to expand on the topic of old dollhouses. Who would've thought there's all this untapped potential for finding unusual inspiration in these.

That second last shot is very impressive, it almost looks life size!

It's almost surreal, as if it were a fairytale castle. You'd get a very unique mission if it took cues from this architecture.

I've always been in love with these kinds of boxes.

There's a museum in Chicago for them I know about.

I had a dream once about a towering room with veins of thin tall stairs crisscrossing their way to higher levels, and that one image evokes it a little. I should be building more from my dreams, come to think of it. They have a better aesthetic than I could come up with.

One of my concepts for Darkmod was in fact to make a kind of scene in a box like this the player can look into, with lots of hand made models and some activity going on. But at that point one may as well put the player into the scene.

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. But the seals held strong, and the few did triumph, and the doubters were lain into the foundations of the new sanctum. -- Collected letters of the Smith-in-Exile, Civitas Approved

Nice timing. I just independently posted a screenshot from that movie.

Well I think it was that version. I'm on a phone and can't confirm for sure.

It is a different adaptation. Not flawless, but the visuals are great for both the city streets and the cellars.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).

Well then, it's been about a week since I released my first FM and I must say that I was very pleasantly surprised by its reception. I had expected half as much interest in my short little FM as I received and even less when it came to positive feedback, but I am glad that the aspects of my mission that I put the most heart into were often the most appreciated. It was also delightful to read plenty of honest criticism and helpful feedback, as I've already been given plenty of useful pointers on improving my brushwork, level design, and gameplay difficulty.
I've gotten back into the groove of chipping away at my reading and game list, as well as the endless FM catalogue here, but I may very well try my hand at the 15th anniversary contest should it materialize. That is assuming my eyes are ready for a few more months of Dark Radiant's bright interface while burning the midnight oil, of course!
