Darkmod: Inspiration thread

Between now and March I am gonna try and visit as many medieval places as possible! I have asked some friends if they would like to come along, as seeing places is always better with friends.

i live in a Hanseatic League city called "Deventer" in the Netherlands, last weekend i took a nice guided tour in my own 1250 years old home-town.

So the first place I am going to visit is Deventer with Freyk as my guide, and this is the hotel I will be staying at -

About the building:

In the early days, the hotel used to be a hospital (buildyear 1874).
and it is official dutch national heritage site. (we got 544 of them in Deventer  )
For more info, let google-translate (or something else) translate the following page:

http://rijksmonumenten.nl/monument/510760/st-josephgsticht-gildehotel/deventer/

About Deventer:

Deventer citycenter looks a bit like Thief's Audale.

Vampyr is now out, I am not a fan of third-person combat from a developer whose past history is bad teenager drama and a game I can't seem to recall right now, but I sure do like victorian london settings! Unfortunately, 50 dollars is too high of an admission ticket to just gawk at architectural pieces, so I'll just settle for the concept art from the game:

Old buildings with a modern look:

In Deventer they want to preserve old buildings,

but there are people that would like it to make it more modern.

Here is a nice example, and a bad one (i.m.h.o):

Good example:

The inner square of the building of the city townhall.

Plasterd walls and water-object.

Google streetview: Inner square of city hall

(tip: look around. You will also see fingerprints from Deventer citizens)

Bad example:

The painted yellow wall of building, used to be a brown wall, see the front of first floor.

(clothingstore that uses my first name.)

Yes a illuminated street at a neighourhood called "Bergkwartier" (trans. mountain quarters) in Deventer,

is nice in the night (or evening), but not for a thief,..

Funny fact:

The bergkwartier is located on a hill.

In medival times, we called a hill, a mountain.

Because my country is flat (for the most part)

and in those years people have never seen a real mountain before,..

I also lived in Dutch Hanseatic League city, called Oldenzaal.
If you in 1744 are a convicted serial killer, people called you by your nickname Huttenkloas (Translated literally. "Cabin Clous")
and they ask you to take a seat,.... you dont want to do that.
Because as a punischment,
you will be pinned down on a chair for 114 days.
and after that, you get finally out of the chair

and they put on a breaking wheel to break all your bones to your death.

Source: apparently from somewhere in Barcelona.

I love that it looks quite Thiefy despite being a brightly-lit afternoon...

Why bother? you cant see anything, at that location at night..

It is the Gothic Quarter in Barcelona, Spain.

There's a restaurant in Antwerp called Pelgrom which is located in an old brick cellar below ground level. Its atmosphere is fantastic and very Thiefy thanks to the brick, low ceilings and doors, and it being lit mainly by candles.

Here's the official gallery, but there are a lot of pictures available if you search. And here's a nice travel blog post about it with a little more information.

EDIT: if anyone's in the area I highly recommend checking it out, and drinking a Westmalle or a Koninck "Triple D'Anvers" :D

Yes, but that would spoil the fun of our trip,..
You can post pictures, that you take during/after the trip, yourself.
I will post pictures after this, again.

@crabmusket, Nice pictures.
I have been in Antwerp in Belgium, too.
I love the "grote markt" (tranlate lit. "big market"-square) and your trainstation (inside picture)
(hyperlinks are to some google streetviews. just look around using your mouse)
(its also a member of the Hanseatic League,..)

More from Antwerp - I regret not taking more photos on this visit! Though my phone camera is a bit crap.

The old meat market has an intersting square out the front

The Steen, an old castle that is perfectly sized and interestingly shaped

The Plantin-Moretus museum which is all about some of the earliest printing presses:

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).

Well then, it's been about a week since I released my first FM and I must say that I was very pleasantly surprised by its reception. I had expected half as much interest in my short little FM as I received and even less when it came to positive feedback, but I am glad that the aspects of my mission that I put the most heart into were often the most appreciated. It was also delightful to read plenty of honest criticism and helpful feedback, as I've already been given plenty of useful pointers on improving my brushwork, level design, and gameplay difficulty.
I've gotten back into the groove of chipping away at my reading and game list, as well as the endless FM catalogue here, but I may very well try my hand at the 15th anniversary contest should it materialize. That is assuming my eyes are ready for a few more months of Dark Radiant's bright interface while burning the midnight oil, of course!
