Darkmod: Inspiration thread

One day, I will really have to take a picture of the house in my neighbourhood that looks like someone's failed Dromed project.

You must. It has been mentioned here in the past and I've been waiting for that for years now. Maybe one day... ;)

This is that day! Behold... the Dromed House!

Let's take a look at what is wrong here!

  • The designer combined high- and low-poly elements in a particularly heinous way. Random lolwut triangles next to random lolwut bevels and semi-circles that don't go together. The detail on the bevels only draw attention to the bare triangles-and-cubes architecture of the rest.
  • Tacked-on elements that try to channel historical architecture (supports, gables), but look out of place since they have no clear function next to a modern basic plan.
  • Badly scaled and positioned windows. Look good on the upper floors (the building's only saving grace), but terrible on the ground floor. Not to mention the lower rooms are not stores but apartments anyone can look inside... or break into. Unpleasant.
  • That thing with the roof corner and the window that cuts through it. Why?
  • Teal. Need I say more?

It doesn't help that I go past this sorry example of post-modernism every single morning on my way to work. It also doesn't help that the Dromed House is located in the middle of the historical city centre, next to some fairly nice streets. At least when I get to work, I can see one of the old city gates from my office:

(Note the wall that begs to be mantled... the storage shed is full of junk, but the gardener's cottage in the back should yield some information before tackling the house.)

...and another house, built into a corner bastion slightly down the street, with enclosed garden:

8/10, would taff.

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. But the seals held strong, and the few did triumph, and the doubters were lain into the foundations of the new sanctum. -- Collected letters of the Smith-in-Exile, Civitas Approved

They did have to install a No Mantling Sign after all. I wonder how many Taffers mantled that wall before they decided to put up a sign.

Wow I like this. I wonder how creepy it would be visiting this in the night, while somebody sat to the ghost statues before waiting for me come close enough to shock the hell out of my shivering body, haha! :D

This might as well be a screenshot from a Thief game:

We should make an european TDM beer feast one day :D

Yes, a very good idea. We could all meet in Germany.

You made the correct decision :D

But I also love british ale pretty much.

Epic stuff! The Dromed house did not disappoint! Why the f*** is there a window intersecting the roof?!?!

It isn't easy to spot from the photo's angle, but the window doesn't just intersect the roof. Some of the roof has actually been replaced with glass tiles so the window isn't in the dark... but I don't think it can actually be fully opened. A true square circle of planning.

Finally got my PC back from the shop after my SSD got corrupted a week ago and damaged my motherboard. Scary stuff, but thank goodness it happened right after two months of FM development instead of wiping all my work before I could release it. New SSD, repaired Motherboard and BIOS, and we're ready to start working on my second FM with some added version control in the cloud just to be safe!

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.
