You can't just link pictures of Beckford's Folly without mentioning William Beckford himself! :) The man was as crazy and almost as rich as Constantine (although his building projects ended up wrecking his fortune). He was basically designing and building crazy, super-ambitious fan missions before he could do it in Dromed or DarkRadiant. He also wrote Vathek, which is worth reading if you like gothic novels.

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. But the seals held strong, and the few did triumph, and the doubters were lain into the foundations of the new sanctum. -- Collected letters of the Smith-in-Exile, Civitas Approved

But that's the Old Quarter ambient from Thief!

Of course I would love to have it in the mod.

That building violates intellctual property.

"I really perceive that vanity about which most men merely prate — the vanity of the human or temporal life. I live continually in a reverie of the future. I have no faith in human perfectibility. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active — not more happy — nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago. The result will never vary — and to suppose that it will, is to suppose that the foregone man has lived in vain — that the foregone time is but the rudiment of the future — that the myriads who have perished have not been upon equal footing with ourselves — nor are we with our posterity. I cannot agree to lose sight of man the individual, in man the mass."...

- 2 July 1844 letter to James Russell Lowell from Edgar Allan Poe.

No it doesn't violate IP because it's not authored. It's a natural sound in the public domain that the video didn't modify. The video or building makers couldn't claim copyright even if they wanted to, because the basis isn't their's to claim.

Edit. Sorry, I didn't catch that was a joke. I thought we were thinking to take it, which we can. As for the building stealing TDP's ambient, yeah, throw the book at them. :D

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

I am serious about finding a good recording of the building and using it as an ambient. It is really good, Brosius-level work. B)

As for buildings and intellectual property... nowadays you can't distribute photos of the Brussels Atomium or the lit-up Eiffel tower (!) due to IP tomfoolery, so I wouldn't be surprised.

I just had an idea for a mission, but am myself too busy IRL, so I don't even get to work on my own WIP. Anyway, since it is the season, I thought that Santa is actually a pretty nice stealth character. I mean: He avoids being seen. He breaks into homes. The only difference is, that he does not steal anything, but leaves something behind. So I think, it would be an interesting idea for a mission, where you distribute presents among people. You could even make it more challenging by giving a list of children, who were good and bad and somehow the player has to punish the bad ones (or just give them coals instead of sweets, if you want to stay more conservative).

I am not sure, if this idea already came up earlier or if there actually is such a mission, but as I said: I liked the idea for a Christmas mission, but don't have the time myself and thus wanted to share the thought.

Interesting idea.

I've done this myself, but on a small scale, and completely optional on the player's part. (During the beta testing of In the North, Springheel felt so bad for the poor sick guy in the infirmary that he left him a health vial ^_^ . Completely unscripted, but it adds a nice touch to playing the mission. On the other hand, other players clubbed the poor defenseless guy. )

A variation of this is to place incriminating evidence somewhere to alert someone of someone else's bad deeds. It's a "present' in a way. I've used that twice in my missions, and other missions have used it as well.

Two older photos of an abandoned manor house:

An unfortunately neglected Neo-Classical style manor house and the ruins of its staff building and storage rooms. Quite atmospheric photos, aren't they ?

I'm guessing that would look something like this:

So after reading a bit of the Dynamic Daytime thread - http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/17667-dynamic-daytime-cycles/?do=findComment&comment=384934, I thought for kicks I would convert Sir Talbot to a full daytime (morning) setting, enjoy.

It looks really good that way, maybe even better than the original! Is it just a test, or are you planning to update the mission and convert it to a daytime scene?

This is probably one of the fewer TDM maps that can go with a daytime setting, considering the action takes place almost entirely indoor so the lighting shouldn't change the gameplay much. Considering that in the story, the player is trying to impress the guy who's house he's breaking into, doing this during the day would totally make sense considering it's more difficult.

If not, I remember TDM has some beautiful dusk / dawn skyboxes as well. Might be intriguing to see how the mission looks with an angled orange sunlight too :)

Sir Talbot's 2: Kick him when he's Down

Story:

After losing all his fortune due to the double-whammy of blackmail and an angry ex-wife, we now loot all food, wine and furniture.

Gameplay twist:

Guards are no longer paid well so they lazily shamble towards you and only become aggressive if you take their food

from in front of them. Talbot doesn't react at all. He just stairs blankly at his broken life.

Objective:

Find the deed to his manor and evict him.

Please visit TDM's IndieDB site and help promote the mod:

(Yeah, shameless promotion... but traffic is traffic folks...)

LOL, like Gman said better to work on new stuff (I have more than enough projects on my plate).

It was just a an exercise to see what a mission would look like with a daytime setting. That and it proved a point, with reduced light count the DC dropped significantly so the perf outside in the garden was way better.

Cool... that is good to know. And good luck on your next mission then!

By the way, here's an interesting thought to consider: Missions could set the daytime based on difficulty! Night for easy, dusk / dawn for medium, day for hard. This makes sense considering each means a new level of daylight and therefore visibility while outside. Of course, the map must have 3 different skyboxes defined, and know when to use each one.

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
