Darkmod: Inspiration thread

You may pay attention at the lighting of some pictures, maybe a talented mission builder feels motivated to create something like an indoor garden with those lighting spots and

high contrasts.

Some pictures are big and detailed, do not miss detailed inspiration.

From non-fiction to TV drama:

It sounds as though there might be something relevant in here:

http://www.bldgblog.com/2016/10/a-burglars-guide-to-tv/

“A Burglar’s Guide to the City” follows a team of modern-day Robin Hoods, led by a brilliant architect with a troubled past, that uses their unique skills to gain access to any stronghold in order to steal from rich criminals and give to those that have been wronged by a corrupt system. The potential series is based on Geoff Manaugh’s non-fiction book.

Hm, I think I will watch the show (or at least the pilot, when it airs). I liked Leverage very much and if this is similar, it will hopefully be fun to watch. I also wanted to read the book, but I am behind on my reading. I still have "The Wheel of Time" to finish and after that, I want to the "The Physician". But maybe I will squeeze it in between the two...

This would be a great place to build upon and make a cool house out of, if we had the carved textures.

I guess normal maps wont cut it for this type of detail...

They probably would with a few new shaders or tweaks to the renderer. Depends on whether any devs willing to do add such around. We are still waiting on Ambient Occlusion and other visual improvements.

"I really perceive that vanity about which most men merely prate — the vanity of the human or temporal life. I live continually in a reverie of the future. I have no faith in human perfectibility. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active — not more happy — nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago. The result will never vary — and to suppose that it will, is to suppose that the foregone man has lived in vain — that the foregone time is but the rudiment of the future — that the myriads who have perished have not been upon equal footing with ourselves — nor are we with our posterity. I cannot agree to lose sight of man the individual, in man the mass."...

Red Hanging Show Globe2 [Public domain], by Natalie kupferberg (Own work), from Wikimedia Commons

They were used to signify apothecaries' shops, though according to the Wikipedia article the really fancy ones are from 19th Century American pharmacies.

Myth #6 from this article has some relevance to thievery:

Another myth from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries does not even involve apothecaries at all. This tale claimed that "charlatans," or criminals that moved often, used carboys to show their cohorts where they could be found. For example, they would send direction to their new location by writing "six candles burning in a coloured lanthorn of orange, white, and blue" or "three lanthorns with candles burning in them upon a balcony". While people may have used the show globes as an easily recognizable landmark for directions, these vessels are strongly associated with the pharmacy profession despite the occasional myth suggesting alternate origins.

I just saw a video about history of the "Highland Gate" in Gdańsk (it's in polish). It was built in 1588. At 1:08 a 3d animation starts, showing how the gate first looked. Napoleon thought of taking it with him to Paris. In 1895 the dike and moat were removed. The gate survived WW2.

Another possibility for decals: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-37817785

The "witches' marks" were often carved near entrances to buildings, including the house where Shakespeare was born and the Tower of London. The symbols were thought to offer protection when belief in witchcraft and the supernatural was widespread.

...

The symbols, also known as apotropaic marks, can be found on medieval houses, churches and other buildings, most commonly from around 1550 to 1750. They took many forms, but the most common type was the "Daisy Wheel", which looked like a flower drawn with a compass in a single endless line that was supposed to confuse and entrap evil spirits.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
