This is very thiefy:

Crumbling building surrounding a gloomy courtyard. Rooftops. Thick, climbable pipes. Windows you can peer through to spy on people. A tucked away terrace high above, leading into someplace interesting.

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. But the seals held strong, and the few did triumph, and the doubters were lain into the foundations of the new sanctum. -- Collected letters of the Smith-in-Exile, Civitas Approved

Whoever lives there, needs to repair that poor facade. At least on the terrace. :P

I live near the complex of a Pschiatric Hospital named Costiujeni in Chisinau.

It has a an impressive array of buildings reminaing from the end of the XIX-'th century and twin water towers built circa 1904. A despaired gasp of failed and much too late attempts at reform inside the falling Russian Empire.

Quite an interesting semi-industrial design. :) I especially like the two water towers.

AFAIK they are made of concrete.

Unfortunately in poor shape due to lack of financing for the purpose of reconstructing them appropriately. Very fortunate to have been built before the post-Soviet archiecture that was a distasteful catastrophe.

A lot of the pictures on my end seem to have been broken for some reason.

There should be more working pictures here:

"I really perceive that vanity about which most men merely prate — the vanity of the human or temporal life. I live continually in a reverie of the future. I have no faith in human perfectibility. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active — not more happy — nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago. The result will never vary — and to suppose that it will, is to suppose that the foregone man has lived in vain — that the foregone time is but the rudiment of the future — that the myriads who have perished have not been upon equal footing with ourselves — nor are we with our posterity. I cannot agree to lose sight of man the individual, in man the mass."...

DarkRadiant Inspiration :P

I'm glad to see Hammer - and by extention our own DR - wins over in the areas where creativity needs to be freest: quick iteration on layouts. There's some areas where DR even outperforms Hammer in UX.

This is more for modeling and texture nerds like me, but you can find a lot of inspiration in these guys' environments The Order 1886:

It's a shame this game was such a flop, as this the highest level you can imagine in terms of models, textures and materials. Absolute world class.

I actually have these guys' GDC presentation on the material and environment rendering in The Order, but the whole thing is too image-heavy (over 300 MBs).

Keep in mind that this is commercial game content. If any is converted for use in TDM, we need permission. The techniques, of course, can be used though The Order has a PBR workflow so some stuff would need to be fudged ( unless some hero arrives to fix all our assets to be PBR compliant...)

Please visit TDM's IndieDB site and help promote the mod:

(Yeah, shameless promotion... but traffic is traffic folks...)

My bad, didn't see that 7zip used PPMd method, which is a it obscure. Updated the link with standard Deflate method zip.

I was impressed by the art in this game from the first trailers through all the gameplay screenshots that came out, even more than Dishonored at the time.

I don't even need (or particularly want) to play it. Just surfing the videos and screenshots are enough.

Goes without saying I dream about building with assets at that level.

Kind of a shame that IP restricts in this way. It's not like the assets themselves are doing anything to stop people buying the game by being in another (non-commercial) game. I guess maybe in some really abstract theory? But law is law. I can only hope that altruistic artists create a set of assets that extensive, that high quality, still low poly, open source, and after all that free. Kind of looks like a pipe dream when you see all the requirements lined up like that.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

I'm also pretty sensitive when it comes to copyright, but I don't understand the problem here. It's not like you can copyright perpendicular gothic ;) You don't have access to any assets, so all you can do is eyeball those objects and try to make something like it.

I could spend 2 months making one of those assets poorly. But 200+ of them, all that high quality & low poly? Even a team of committed people couldn't do that in a year short of professionals with a 5 or 6 digit budget. I mean, I don't think individual pieces here and there by me that don't necessarily fit together can compete.

Incidently, I do want to say, all that said, I'm extremely happy about the fantastic asset dump that's coming in 2.05, and Spingheel in particular is a heroic figure for me for actually getting us as close to utopia as any single person could under our circumstances. And even that seriously wore him down. But I can't appreciate him enough for his superhuman work for us. I don't want to give the wrong impression in what I said above about how happy & proud I am of our modelers, bless them all. We really are lucky to have what we have. Yes it'd be cool to always have more, but I don't want to overstate the case. I'm very happy with what we have already too.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Well, I plan to use mostly my models in textures in my first mission, made from the ground up, without any photos as a base ;) Of course not at that level of quality and polish as here, there were teams of people working on that. Then again, I have all the phases and passes loosely planned throughout the year, and the map will be quite small. I should have time for something visually decent.

Don't need a huge budget or teams of people to make low poly HQ models, just a great workflow and technique. Once upon a time i was that good in 3dsMax, and just now starting to get there in blender. It helps to study 3d models from other games and figure out some of the tricks by reverse engineering, not to use the original models, but study how they are put together, and how easy it is to trick the eye into seeing higher detail.

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
