Well, older engines most certainly run with high framerates on modern hardware.

However, modern systems allow far more details, eye candy, dynamic lights, ai complexity, etc when compared to the older systems.

It's a tradeoff. You pay performance, you get features and eye candy.

I confess that I am not a dromed expert, but I think it is fair to say that modern DR gives much more versatility, options and graphic goodies for the mapper than the older technology.

Well, the current version of Return to the City (which is not a large mission by any means) has 4622 [terrain] brushes, 3682 patches and 2295 entities. That makes for a total of 10599 things in the map, a good 150% of the absolute maximum Dromed allows. NHAT/2: A Night Out of Town has 9241 brushes, 2509 patches and 3778 entities, a total of 15528 (222%). If the same brushes, patches and entities were spread out like in Dromed, they could make a map as large as the ones you mentioned, although of course it would have Dromed-level graphics etc. (which, as Sterlino and others have proved, can be damn nice if they are designed well). But if we are talking something of a giant size and up to better standards of detail - yes, that's going to need better hardware to run.

Also, large maps take time. You mentioned Disorientation; I know it well because I built it. Not counting the delays in between stretches of construction, it was a 11 month project that took a tremendous amount of time to complete. It is a good map because it got months and months and months of polish and testing, and it is roughly as large as Dromed allows. Once people commit the same time and effort into TDM maps (it most likely won't be me), I bet we will be seeing projects of the same scope. After all, even Calendra wasn't built in a day.

Asteroids is better than HL2 because it only cost a quarter to play and it didn't take but a second to load.

And you only needed one fist and a couple of fingers.

And, also? You could eat pizza and have a Coke. And it went PYO! PYO! KRRRRR! PYO! PYO! PYO!

getting back to the title of this thread, has anyone that has a windows 7 based system been able to get past the sewer at the beginning ?? When I cut the wires, bang the pipe to release gas and flip the switch nothing happens.. Yandros suggested it was windows defender or same such blocking the T2 scripts from running - but if that were the case why do other heavily customised T2 missions work just fine..?

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
