Duke Nukem Forevat the Fu@#

One of the design decisions I do agree with is having pipe bombs/trip bombs separate from the current weapon. That is one of the major innovations in shooters since Duke3d. In older games, grenades weren't used very much because if you selected them and your opponent had any kind of ranged weapon, you were in big trouble. Think of it the way grenades were used in Team Fortress: They were there to supplement your other weapons, and if you were a wimpy class (like a medic) you could chuck one at a sniper to dispatch him.

Hm.. They should have developed similar attitude towards engine change suggestions as in this forum.

I read somewhere that there were serious management issues. Every time a shiny new thing came out from another game developer, the head honcho would say "oh! wow! we must have that in DNF!" And the long-suffering development team would have to implement it. Over and over again. I can only imagine how badly that must have sucked. :(

Basically his attitude was that DNF absolutely had to be the best game ever, at any cost. Well, it cost all right...

Like any volunteer project, TDM doesn't suffer from management issues because there is no management. Nobody can force anyone to do anything, so things only happen if people want them enough to make them happen themselves. (There is the occasional silly pet project, but in the best case it's a neat if less-than-useful new feature that boosts morale, and in the worst case it's only one team member wasting their time, not an entire development studio. :P )

My games | Public Service Announcement: TDM is not set in the Thief universe. The city in which it takes place is not the City from Thief. The player character is not called Garrett. Any person who contradicts these facts will be subjected to disapproving stares.

Yeah, if Crazy George had some patience, we would have already seen three Duke games: one for the Quake 2 engine, another for Unreal, and now this one. And people would have been eating them up too.

I'd still pay money for the Q2 build if it were ever finished.

actually I hate those fools who ruin such masterpiece. I have waited it more than 10 years and result is nothing. And these guys gonna make it in one year. So, it's gonna suck in different way. You decide who is the funny.

Sometimes, I hate to be proved right. -_-

After 12 years it was total crap. Even Gearbox delayed the release date in 2011. For what? optimizing frame? yeah, fps sucks. Optimizing load times? yeah, load times killing all my spare time. Optimizing graphics? yeah, low poly models and low res textures are all around.

duck nukem forever sucks forever.

End of legend.

If it can be modded, someone will make a mod for this game and restore it to PC centric game-play.

As far as the "racy content", who cares... it's a game where your primary modus operandi is to kill everything that moves. Sure, I can already tell that some of the jokes are lame but I have a hard time feeling "offended" by the actions of a prototypical "action hero cum human killing machine". Yes, he only kills aliens but we all know that those entities are effigies for the mass populace of people who frustrate the hell outta us daily. It's a game designed to indulge primal killing catharsis like any old school shooter should.

Sexual immaturity, misogyny?

Hell, that might be a selling point if I knew it would offend my tyrannical wife  (But it wouldn't, she's even more immature than me, it would probably be seen as redeeming and down-to-earth compared to my nerdy interests. She's more puzzled that I don't spend 90% my idle PC time browsing porn like a "real man" )

Goddammit... if we add the pure schadenfreude, B-Movie kitsch, and morbid curiosity, I might just be the target audience

All that is noise anyway, any decent mod of the game that ever emerges will trim the damn cut-scenes (gags, etc) and let folks shoot their guns.

Please visit TDM's IndieDB site and help promote the mod:

(Yeah, shameless promotion... but traffic is traffic folks...)

Although there is a known bug on the PC that caused the normal maps to be shut off, making everything look like crap...and worse than the console version. Hopefully that will restore the game a bit when it's patched.

I've never been a Duke fan but even I am disappointed that this game has failed to get even a passing grade in most of its reviews, even though I'm not going to get the game, nor was I ever. I'd really like to know what the hell they were doing for so long, writing bad jokes?

The management of 3DRealms were doing what a lot of mod teams do, getting distracted by new shiny tech, and then dumping all their work to switch over to that tech. They did it several times...I wouldn't doubt that there are 3 or 4 unfinished versions of Duke Nuke'em Forever laying around on old HD's somewhere.

I feel bad for Triptych Games, the folks behind actually getting Duke on the shelves. When 3D Realms shut down, these former 3D Realms employees took it upon themselves to finish the game. As Raen pointed out on TTLG, it was finished in his living room. For those who don't know who Raen is, he was responsible for steering T2X across the finish line, and also worked as a level designer on Thief: Deadly Shadows. Gearbox seems to get all the credit for finishing Duke in the press, but it was Triptych who did the grunt work.

I haven't played it yet, but I think a lot of reviewers are being pretty hard on it because of the impossible to meet expectations. It's probably not as bad as the reviews make it out to be.

I had some extra cash to spend, but I couldn't justify buying this. It was already going for $30 on Amazon. I will one day play it though, probably when it hits $9.99 or $4.99. Till then, there's Shadow Warrior..... That game always cracked me up, especially stuff like the dinghy part. It was funnier than Duke IMO.

It, uh, certainly has

.

After the bad reviews started rolling out, I watched the first 40 minutes of a Youtube playthrough, then snippets after that, and it was mostly really bad, not at all like D3D.

the only problem with the game is that its like 2 games stuck together, the first half in certain area's feels like a mixture of professional game and amateur game making, all the way up to the alien queen, then after that it feels like an amateur made it. It also gives stupid tips like exploring the game zone could bring rewards, when actually going off the linear path and the game will reward you with an instant death. There's also a sense of weird game play that get repeated a lot, to pad the game out, go one way through a level, then get shrunken/enlarged and go back through the same level. Plus you can't save, the game decides when to save for you, and in some cases the gap between when it saves is so big that you get fed up with constantly doing the same thing over and over again due to instant death due to a game bug, and not a fault of you getting killed via a gun shot. eg the kitchen in the burger place. and the gear jumping in the dam. and trying to workout how you end the alien queens life.

Plus it really looks and feels like a console port, even though it was originally done for pc only, making it for the xbox is probably why you only get two weapons, and no saves, and the graphics look really shit. like for las vegas the background picture for the skybox is of such a low resolution and out of focus that it looks really crap.

When I played the demo the first thing that came to mind was that the two weapon restriction as well as the regenerating life were quick and cheesy ways to balance the game's difficulty. It would be interesting to know how much influence Gearbox had on this game's development and how much was actually finished when it was picked up by them.

@New Horizon:

I definitely know there's two from old pics; I bet you are right though. It's sad to see when that happens, it reminds me of an old Half-Life 1 mod that look incredible, then the last minute they decided to switch to the Source engine, spent a load of time porting assets then gave up: Anyone remember Nightwatch?

As far as I am concerned, I liked a lot what I saw in the first 30 min of a youtube playthrough - there were a lot of little nice ideas, that sounded like fun - a lot of interaction with the environment. A few things were a bit gross, but actually I though that was the funny point about them. Driving a toy car seems awesome. And cCome on, cigarette packs called Faggs? I guess none of the reviewers are british, and I guess they all have lost their entire sense of humor - oh wait, they are game reviewers, of course they lost their humor long ago..

Well the game really feels like it's a literal "blast from the past". If a game that had similar gameplay and story would've been released back in 2001 or what was it, when it was actually new and cool and not every single FPS had been made. It would've been a potentially awesome game.

But applying those same early-2000 FPS ideas today doesn't really translate with the general public...

And believe me I think DNF is a sad excuse of a game, especially thinking back at that time when they said it was officially over, and someone leaked the storyline and all that. And when we see the game 2-3 years later IT'S THE SAME GODDAMN STORYLINE!

(Or at least the beginning of it.)

I thought that a leak like that would kinda force someone to rewrite at least a little, as to not make it so "old" before it's even released, but whatever.

That's when I face-palmed for real, I thought they could not possibly go with that shitty story after all, but dammit they went and did exactly that!

DNF couldn't even shake a stick at D3D even if it tried. D3D was fun. And it was hilarious to use the editor-tool and make levels for it. (Early mapper background, haha :D).

Do let us know if you hear any music as epic and awesome as this song "Mellow Chello" from the PS version of DN3D. This is actually a remix being made by the guy who originally made the tune.

I can't decide which version I love more, but both are on my MP3 player. I used to just sit on that level and listen to that song over again. Edited by lost_soul

I installed the demo today and gave it a try because it is currently ten bucks on Steam. It was sort of ho-hum. The game runs great on my machine, but I feel as though I am stuck on a path that I cannot vary from to explore at all. I thought the waterfall looked kind of cool on the second level, so I decided to jump in. Bet you can guess what happened there! :) It just killed me. If there's a hallway with lots of doors, the only one that will open is the one you're supposed to use. It really does feel like a step back from DN3D in every way except graphics. This includes the UI.

While on the second level, I thought I could start a new game and explore the first level again to see if I missed anything in terms of interactivity. It told me I would lose my progress if I did that. Even Wolfenstein 3D is more advanced here.

I dunno, I kind of want to buy it to see what happens, but I feel I would have more *fun* playing some Thief FMs where it isn't just an interactive movie.

I did buy it and even set up an XP install in order to play it (my first windows install since 2002). I played it through, once, then formatted the hard drive the XP install and steam was on... turning it back into a backup storage drive. That's about how much I enjoyed Duke Forever.

Also George Broussard (spelling?) admitted that they (3DRealms) had spent way, way too much of their dev time playing WoW instead of working on DNF.

Finally got my PC back from the shop after my SSD got corrupted a week ago and damaged my motherboard. Scary stuff, but thank goodness it happened right after two months of FM development instead of wiping all my work before I could release it. New SSD, repaired Motherboard and BIOS, and we're ready to start working on my second FM with some added version control in the cloud just to be safe!

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.
