Black screen when trying to play Dark Mod?

Ok, I completely nuked everything. I uninstalled doom 3, deleted every file, and re-installed it through steam. Then, I wan tdmupdate.exe to download the dark mod instead of downloading it from another source.

Now, everything seems to be working well, except even though my resolution is set to 1920x1080, it looks like a much lower resolution. It is fullscreen, but it's nowhere close to 1920x1080 because the text is kind of blocky, and so are the textures while playing. It looks like 800x600 stretched to fullscreen or something like that.

Now what's going on

I checked my doomconfig.cfg (in the darkmod folder), and it appears that the settings are saved correctly.. Do I need to make some resolution changes in Doom 3's base folder or something?

i recall having these problems as well. No matter what resolution i ran the game in, it was reduced to 640x480. I found that the fix for this is in the aspect ratio. If you choose the wrong aspect ratio for your monitor then everything screws up.

edit: I found that to verify your actual in-game resolution, just take a screenshot and check what res its at.

Thanks! It seems like it was the aspect ratio that was causing the problem. It was set to 16:10, but I couldn't tell because the resolution was so low! After I changed it, it worked like a charm.

2 things:

1. I noticed that safes don't make a noise when you open/close them (at least in the training mission)

2. Is there any better way to adjust gamma/brightness than the gamma room? I feel like I'm kind of shooting in the dark as far as if I have actually achieved the correct settings or not.. Does anyone have any screenshots of the training level I could compare with mine, or any suggestions on how to better calibrate it?

It says you shouldn't be able to read the middle wall, so I assume the left wall should be like completely dark, right?

Other than that, it's awesome so far. I've just been doing the training level, and I'm picking everything up pretty quick I think. I set the lockpicking on expert and I would recommend this level for just about anyone honestly. I am a complete beginner and I am enjoying expert but it may be because I have a lot of experience playing rhythm games (like guitar hero), and my timing is just pretty good in general. I really like how you have to switch lockpicks every other tumbler.

Oh, and if you mess up while lockpicking, does it reset you to the last tumbler? I couldn't tell if this was happening or not because I didn't really take the time to pay attention. If so, does it do this for both kinds of doors (with and without visual cues)?

Edit: Another thing I noticed is that the next/prev weapon does not work at all. If you have a weapon, you can't select it by hitting "next weapon".. Kind of annoying, because those buttons don't really serve a purpose as they are right now. It looks like this has already been brought up though as I was reading through some threads today.

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
