A campaign almost certainly requires one person making the big decisions. Trying to create even a single mission by committee is frustrating and time-consuming.

 

Well anything done by committee is incredibly frustrating it's just the nature of the beast.

I always assumed I'd taste like boot leather.

Well, maybe it works with lush restrictions and determinations. Each mapper can do what he wants, and only needs to stick to some concrete allowences. The whole thing is finetuned in the end, when every map is done. I don't think that there hast to be a strict script for each map.

The most realistic chance of making a campaign is a modest compromise.

 

A contest.

Each contestant produces a mission of their choice.

Must have the same character as everyone else.

Must agree it can be modified to suit the campaign, eg, story etc.

Someone with enough time manages it and works it all together.

 

We still need campaigns enabling in Dark Mod. Currently they would either be all separate FMs you play in order like NOHAT or they all link together but the only briefing and difficulty choice is at the start. The only stats are for the final level which leads to mission complete. Each level has its own title loader possibly with some briefing info.

 

[EDIT] Or of course, a cut scene like in SATC.

A contest is also a good idea if you ask me. At least, you've got a time delay in wich everyone must have done his map. Then the final work and linking could be done. But I am not sure, if there would come out some missions that are very similiar to another and thats why the variety could suffer.

 

Siyah, did you already open up a thread on your progress? Couldn't find something?

      Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

      I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
      Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

      Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

      Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
