New Thief Characters

I'm sure they'll be hurling flaming skulls or something because it is relatively not too difficult to set up. The mechanism for throwing stuff is already there. In fact I think I've seen this somewhere by chance. It might have been the Alchemist in the SVN install or one of the undead. I'm sure I've seen some flaming balls or something thrown at me while testing. I'd forgotten about that. I think the firewisp (forget the name!) thing did too.

[EDIT] 'elementals' is the name I was trying to remember.

Imp-style fireballs would be freaking scary, since in Doom3, they could sort of curve to follow the player. Also, imagine it with object physics, e.g. a ball of flame blasting a stack of bottles every which way. Hardware-intensive but oh so impressive. B)

Armed priests can already hurl balls of fire, so something similar would probably be set up for mages. Not sure yet.

In an effort to be egalitarian, I've created a female thief version. I'll probably add a bit more armour to her and make a guard version from it as well at some point.

Is it just me, or is that gal rather... flat-chested?

It seems you play computer games too much. ;)

I'd say that for such a skinny street lady that amount of 'equipment' is okay.

That's exactly my point: is it a female body at all? Maybe the perspective is just irritating, but I got the feeling that it's the same Thief body with just a female head. Anyway, I ust want to state that I'm NOT a fan of Lara Croft or other women with a similar ... rack. Hell no, remember that girl from Drakan? *sigh* I still mas... fantasize about her.

that girl from Drakan?

Pretty. But the clothing looks very impractical for battle. And terribly cold for the medieval times.

Well, I am no specialist, but leather armor is supposed to be rigid in order to be able to resist blows. Also one might assume they do not make breast-form leather armor for the ladies. Therefore the lady has chosen improved protection with the cost of comfort. (As opposed to the wench.)

But this brings forth the interesting topics of how computer games portray different genders and what we players are used to: in general majority of games males are always muscular and women are always very buxom. There are no spindling men, nor flat ladies. And we are used to that. That's why I believe the flatness gets your attention.

I compared the men thieves to the female one, and actually the men bodies look more feminine than the female look masculine. This is probably due to the skinnyness.

But to me, the models are great.

You know, Springheel, those female thieves remind me of a blond version of Thief 2's female City Watch Guards.

Yeah, I'll probably make a guard model out of it too. A bit of chainmail texture, some pauldrons, and I think she'd make a decent mercenary. Much more appropriate as a guard than the rogue and her cleavage.

And that would be most welcome! :)

Damn nice work, Springheel!!! I hope you´ll never retire from TDM... ;)

Yes, the player model will be replaced with the fully-equipped version, although I haven't done that yet. I'll then need to make some specialized animations for him (creeping, leaning, etc), so that he'll react properly in mirrors (at least to some degree). More importantly, I'd like the animations available for mappers to make cut-scenes like Above the City. That won't be done for 1.04, however.

Also the PlayerShadow will benefit much, don´t forget the PlayerShadow!!

Hmm... Did you knew that they released a Nude-patch? It was on their official site back then... But it WAS cold, even in Snow-areas she would show her lovely skin. Oh, and the Dragon was completely naked!! But also he would spent warm breath, that must be the reason for her outfit´s...

I too had the 'big-head'-impression, I hope you´re right about the perspective. I can´t wait to see them in game. I´m even more excited about the PlayerShadow/Player-model! Will there be also 'weapon drawn'-animations for the player-model, yeah? :)

We do have some heavier models, but they need adjusting to work with our main skeleton (or they need an entirely new skeleton, and thus an entirely new set of animations). It's not a trivial amount of work.

Can't help my curiosity though, any info on when we might see the mages show up in TDM?

Ok, spent a few days putting together a new mage character, using parts of the builder priest mesh as a base. Comes in two different colours, with the decorative hanging symbols and without. I'm still working on getting the attack behaviour right, but you can look forward to mages being in 1.04.

With women, thieves and mage characters added, I hope we'll see lots of interesting new missions coming up. :)

Coolness, Spring! This is most excellent work and well timed too. The "small" v1.04 update is going to pack quite a punch with all these new AI.

Does the mage have an own vocal set yet? Average Jack and others will work fine for younger mages or mages lower in hierarchy of the Order but experienced mages probably need their very own vocals?

"Which spell was that? He was here just a moment ago..."

"Step forth, knave, lest I turn thee into a frog!" ;)

Also a random idea: could some more experienced mages cast a light spell to assist him when he is looking for the player? Now there's a gameplay feature, which would keep the players on their toes near mages..

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
