Contest Survey

Well for example a lot of the wip's already have had images posted.

That's a good point. I think you're right with the rule to start from scratch.

The statement that Thief FM contests never had prizes is mistaken (example) and I think that, depending on the generosity of a few people, having a prize pool would be a nice motivational idea. I actually wouldn't mind donating a bit for a FM contest if there were to be many newcomers. What wouldn't be fun is a contest where only the few very active mappers produce a mission and everyone forgets it after a while. I'm afraid that the mapping community might be quite reduced at the moment, and it's still doubtful to me whether people would be interested in making their first map.

Also, is Aprilsister an alt of aidakeeley? I certainly detect the same kind of unnerving irrelevance.

EDIT: By the way, I'm the one who voted for use of ambient sounds, though that was almost a tie with seasons. None of the currently released missions for TDM have convinced me sound-wise. I'm pretty sure that a strong highlight on aural experience would force mappers to spend a lot of time tweaking their rooms to perfection to the benefit of all experience modalities. I'm a sucker for multimodal immersion.

I'd say there is a "rush" to get the basis defined so that people could then have something to sign on to...

Aye. All this discussion and voting is useless if we have too few participants in the end. That is why i see it important to get to the "mappers enroll" phase relatively quickly.

As it appears that the survey is not accumulating any more votes, I will declare "Seasons" the winning theme.

I am working on the final details for this contest and will post them as soon as possible in a new thread...

Please visit TDM's IndieDB site and help promote the mod:

(Yeah, shameless promotion... but traffic is traffic folks...)

Just a quick idea for a future contest. biggrin.gif

Not sure if this has been suggested already. Take the training mission map as a base and turn it into a proper FM. You could add anything you want to it, or remove whatever seems un-necessary. Obvious downside is that you might get tired of seeing similar architecture in each entry, and it might also be a bit jarring to go from one mission where you expect door x to lead to y and the next mission door x leads to z.

Heh, the more I write the less of a good idea this seems, but I still think it would be interesting from a mappers pov, though if there were interest in a contest like this it would probably be best to wait until TDM is more established. It would be best if early contests were aimed at bringing about as much variety in visuals and gameplay as possible.

And for a contest furtherer into the future, "Mini Games", like some of the recent T2 FMs like Snowball Fight or the zombie one or something that involves clever use of the physics system a la Swing. Such a contest should probably be postponed until there are a greater number of traditional stealth maps (same reason to not do a "total crap" contest :P).

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
