Problems with The Dark Mod 1.04

Looks like somebody added hardware eating components in TDM 1.04. :(

I've tested some of the old missions. They're running slowly or crash.

The main menu looks blurry, too. Display resolutions were TDM 1.04 @ 640x480 and TDM 1.04 @ 1280x720.

It's running smoothly with TDM 1.03 @ 1024x768.

System Configuration:

AMD Athlon X2 2.8 GHz Dual-Core, 2 GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 3200, 22" (1920 x 1080), Win XP Pro with SP3.

Any ideas how to solve this problem ?

Watch out, that it doesn't munch too much, or your memory vanishes :D

Just kidding:

Looks like either image downsizing is on, or some other parameter is missing.

Does the FAQ help?

...unloading OpenGL DLL

Going to take the actions of restarting, unloading map manually (how do I do that?), redownloading.

Consistent crashing after loading "The Thieves" and then each time opening TDM 1.04:

ERROR: Error: file script/tdm_location_settings.script, line 234: too few parameters for function 'getLightInPVS'

You need to get an updated version of this mission, you should be able to download this from inside TDM (after you edited currentfm.txt!). Otherwise grab it from the website, and replace the PK4 in Doom3/thieves/ with the new version.

If you sometimes get poor FPS when starting a mission, try quicksaving and then quickloading again. This has been an issue for quite a wile now, and I still see it happen on occasion in 1.04. This is on a system that should be able to tear through any Doom 3 mod. (Phenom x6 1075t, 8 GB DDR3 and OC'd GTX460 1 GB)

Don't know if it's 1.04 related, but beta-testing TKM for Tels here's what I encountered:

And a classic collision-with-bed problem, after blackjacking the poor nobleman :D

Post Processing is disabled.

I've only updated from TDM 1.03 to TDM 1.04 and tested the aspect ratios 4:3, 16:9 and 16:10 but it doesn't help.

Make sure image_downsize, image_downsizebump and image_downsizespecular are all set to 0 by checking them in the console. Also make sure you don't have image compression and normal compression enabled in the menu.

After making those changes, you'll need to restart the game...in some cases maybe even reset your resolution to give it a kick in the pants.

Settings in DoomConfig.cfg are:

seta image_downSizeLimit "512"

seta image_ignoreHighQuality "0"

seta image_downSizeBumpLimit "512"

seta image_downSizeSpecularLimit "128"

seta image_downSizeBump "0"

I saw you posted you can play the map in v1.03 but not v1.04. I *think* we changed some textures in v1.04, so maybe one of them did grow a bit and that is now enough to force your system to run out of memory?

Problems I've encountered in 1.04:

AI walking around and around in tight circles, usually near a door.

Sudden, drastic drop in framerate while underwater, and I have a pretty high-end system. (intel 4-core i7 950, 6 GB RAM, ATI radeon HD 5870 1 GB, win 7 pro 64, running at 1920x1200.)

Water-splash effect looks bizarre in some situations, such as dragging a ragdoll around in shallow water - the entire surface of the water turns white, I guess because the splash effect is being triggered over and over again continuously.

Water-splash sound plays 3-4 times in rapid succession when I jump into deep water.

Guards with lanterns drop the lanterns when KO-ed, and then there is no way to pick up or even move the lantern - it becomes a new, permanent light source. I noticed this in Knighton Manor.

BJ-ing is easier than in the previous version, but still fiddly and frustrating.

The end-mission music stutters, that is, it starts playing, restarts after less than 1 second, then cuts out without finishing.

Menu screen items aren't visible at first, and fade in gradually after a few moments. I know this is on purpose, but whatever tiny amount it contributes to the thiefy atmosphere is far overwhelmed by how annoying it is to have to wait a few extra moments every single time you want to use the menu.

Blackjacking has been revamped for our next release...1.05. We discovered a couple of small issues with Blackjacking system that were causing the fiddly and frustrating reports from a lot of users. The same rules apply...we haven't made the ko zones bigger or anything, but the system behind the blackjack itself is much more reliable now.

You don't have to wait, you can make the menu items appear by running the cursor over the area...but we can look into shortening the delay.

there seems to be a problem with fog lights and post processing, although it doesn't happen all the time, basically the fog flickers at the current frame rate, turning off post processing, then turning it back on seems to fix the flicker.

What was the reason for fading them in? After 14 months of playing and working with TDM, it continues to bother me that the menu items aren't immediately available and I have to wriggle the cursor around to make them appear faster. When I'm starting TDM umpteen times a day, it gets annoying.

Yes, this is a feature that looks very good if you start the game for the first time (or first time a day), but it gets annoying if you restart TDM multiple times to test something out.

The intention was only to have it fade in the first time the game loads, not every time the main menu comes up.

The ideal is the original plan IMO. It's a nice fade as it is now for when you first start the game, but we don't need a fade when you go to the menu after that. So it's a matter of making that condition robust.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Finally got my PC back from the shop after my SSD got corrupted a week ago and damaged my motherboard. Scary stuff, but thank goodness it happened right after two months of FM development instead of wiping all my work before I could release it. New SSD, repaired Motherboard and BIOS, and we're ready to start working on my second FM with some added version control in the cloud just to be safe!

I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.
