Any good SP FPS to recommend?

I have suddenly realised I am missing blasting stuff into bloody chunks with a backpack's worth of futuristic weaponry, and the most recent games from that category I actually own are Half-Life 2 and FEAR. So, could you recommend me some nice, classical, single player FPS games based on my preferences below?

Games I liked:

Original Unreal: large levels, fantasy-meets-technology aspect, music from the best of the modscene

Unreal Tournament and various mods (Operation: Na Pali!)

Half-Life / Half-Life 2: good balance of environments and gameplay gimmicks. HL2 started to become a bit overbearing, though, if that makes sense.

Painkiller: a modern Quake-like game!

Max Payne: bullet time, badass clichés and villains (okay, not really an FPS)

Games I have not been impressed with:

FEAR: generic, repetitive, horror story trite and uninteresting

HALO: played the start at a friend, entirely forgettable

Max Payne 2: embarrasing love story, pity porn, too hard

Doom 3: had its moments, but monster closet design was a bit of a letdown - plus it didn't feel properly doomy

Games I am not looking for: Bulletstorm, anything involving WW2 (incl. modern Wolfenstein-clones), Far Cry (liked it, but not interested in the sequel), Quake 4, Serious Sam

My system specs are:

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.00 GHz

6.00 GB RAM

Windows 7

ATI Radeon HD 4800

[edit] If there are good full Doom3 campaigns out there that are better than the original game, I may be interested in them[/edit]

If you liked Painkiller, you could try the game "Necrovision", which has been developed by the same team. You're going to shoot nazi zombis etc in that game. :) I am not too sure though whether your machine can handle it. Other than that, I guess we should wait for duke nukem forever. :D

I don't know yet about Duke. I liked the first game for the amazing, interactive level design and creative weapons, not the strippers. The previews have shown a lot of the latter and not enough of the former.

Jedi Knight 2? Only first third of the game is FPS only , latter parts are tps/fps but i remember it as a good action-filled game with lots of variety and nice puzzles.

btw: Halo gets better later, i liked it for its great AI, and i guess because of the nice shiny specularmaps:D

If you liked System Shock , you can try Dead Space 1 and 2 , those games are very similiar

not really! I see no connection but being on a spaceship.

DS is ok, but quiet repetitive.

NOLF 1,2

++

two classic games of Monolith before they dumped gameplay for graphics since FEAR

... you have the choice of bullet or sneak your way through these stylish games though sneaking is very hard (ghosting near impossible).

You also might try the last cool Monolith game really worth mentioning: Tron 2.0. I remember it being very unqiue and fun!

Thanks for the suggestions, people!

Shadowhide, I've already played HL, Opposing Force, HL2 and NOLF1-2, so those are out. Dead Space sounds interesting, though.

_Atti_: I am not a Star Wars fan (only liked Empire Strikes Back, and that mostly for the Brackett influences - Han Solo and Lando yes, force mumbo-jumbo no), so I probably wouldn't enjoy any game based on it.

demagogue: Bioshock was immensely disappointing for me. :( How are Dead Space and Mass Effect?

I would recommend Undying.

It uses the old Unreal engine and I don't know how well it aged, but I remember it having a great horror story and very atmospheric level design.

Not a futuristic setting but you still kill things. :)

Did you play Half-Life 2: Episode 1 and 2? If you liked Half-Life 2 you can't go wrong with them; they're a better, more refined version of the game.

Mass Effect reminds me a little of the early Unreals, the reason I mentioned it, planet hopping, futuristic weapons, with more NPCs & story and RPGish. Dead Space is FPS on an infested spaceship; pretty much does what it says on the tin.

You know when I'm looking for a game anymore I watch a "let's play" video of half the 1st level or a random level to see what's going on and how it plays.

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

Then you should try Prey. D3 engine, suits your description exactly, great gravity fun (something different than gravity gun from HL2),pretty good game design.

If you want some Freebee Doom 3 stuff that is arguably better than the monster-closet stuff in the beginning of Doom 3, I recommend:

In Hell

Classic Doom 3

Gatehouse (map)

Insomnia (map pack... oddly the pk4 is spelled insonmia ???)

Escape from Enemy Mountain (currently beta?)

Maybe:

Kings Cemetery (map)

The Ladder (map)

...and if you are looking for some schadenfreude or camp (or booth?):

Are you guys messin' with Melan

I hear the ReWolfenstien mod for HL2 is some hot-shit

...

Just be wary of the Painkiller expansions. Painkiller Overdose was HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE...

I tried the Painkiller Resurrection demo and found it to be decent (I guess it was a mod before it became a commercial expansion?)

I was going to suggest this as well, I LOVE Undying, the music, the driven story. I find myself saying *stuck*......*won't budge* When I can't move something. :P

A couple of others are Alice, quirky fun. Also Vampire Masquerade Bloodlines. Bloodlines is so god damn cool, I played it waay too much. Killer music.

is a pretty cool game. It had great atmosphere and sound effects, with water dripping in pipes, rain hitting windows (and then coming into the room if you break them). I used to play it on a Pentium 100. :)

Also, Return To Castle Wolfenstein still looks fantastic. I guess it is just because of the artwork, but when standing on top of the castle in the first level, it really draws me in. The music is good too, especially the menu theme.

I tried to get into this a while ago but it repeatably crashed on my W7 64-bit system, so I gave up.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
