Would more gameplay videos help?

The problem is your desktop is NOT a 3D window, fraps can only record DirectX/OpenGl windows, which is why your XY views are being recorded as they are opengl windows.

There is another program out there that can do what you want I don't remember what it's called though. Try searching for desktop video capture or something like that.

I always assumed I'd taste like boot leather.

yeah i found something on youtube about desktop recording, it was called "camtasia" or something like that. 30 day free trial, but that should suffice for what i want to do.

I tried that program some time ago and it seems to be pretty good, though for some reason it recorded some of Blenders colors inverted but otherwise it was all good.

funny you should mention it komag, i just rewatched your "first 2 rooms" video again today after linking it to our noob campaign forum from shadowdark keep, and noticed the camtasia shortcut on your desktop in the video :)

An NHAT play-through would be cool. Ever want to experience a part of a game but are too lazy to play through it again yourself? Lol I guess that's pretty darn sad...

Seems like most of the play-throughs are for older missions.

There are some videos up on moddercove's Youtube channel (is he a poster on these boards?), and among others, he has videos of Fauchard Street and Mandrasola, so he is following things.

On a similar note, I have let people know of TDM in the new Thief topic on Something Awful, and also recommended A Score to Settle. It is not a high-traffic thread, but if someone tries and likes the mod because of my posts, that's a plus for both them and us. Here is the post for the interested (since the forums are sometimes hidden behind their paywall):

While not "2011 engine" modern, you can get a lot of mileage out of The Dark Mod, which I would recommend to anyone looking for a modern, smooth Thief experience.

What is it?

The Dark Mod is a total conversion that recreates the mechanics of the first two games on the Doom3 engine. You might remember Doom3 as a claustrophobic corridor shooter where you spent a lot of your time trying to find your way with a crappy flashlight. TDM is not that game. Everything but a few assets have been replaced by the mod team. You have your light gem, you have your two lockpicks, your tapdancing shoes, you have broadhead, water, moss, fire, gas, rope and noisemaker arrows; you have mines, flashbombs and most of the other gear. Plus a hooded lantern, and a telescope instead of the mechnical eye.

You can lean from corners and mantle up onto objects - in fact, this system has been

so it feels natural and almost catlike - and you can swing from deployed ropes. Otherwise, it is very faithful to Thief - including swimmable water, of course.

The AI are very much what you would expect: a variety of guards from watch officers to ragged ruffians, nobles, commoners, thieves, servants of the Builder Church (pretty much the Hammerites under a different name); undead and more. Some of their responses and behaviour are not as fluid or varied as Thief yet, but they keep improving over the released versions, and as of 1.06, they can follow you via elevators, throw rocks at you if they can't reach you with a sword, relight important lights, be set to play cards with each other and so on.

The fiction behind the game is very close to Thief's, although it does not use names from Thief canon for reasons of legal safety. Otherwise, you will find your inscrutable electric machinery, religious fanatics, undead-haunted catacombs, haughty aristocrats and slum lords. The factions missing are the Keepers and the Mechanists, who were very IP-specific; instead, inventors fill the role of technologists, and there are necromancers. But actually, since it is a fan-driven mod, the specifics and style are up to the mission builders.

Is there a full game behind it?

No official campaign has been released to date. But as of now, you can select from 45 missions, with more being worked on. These range from small and simple break-ins to elaborate mansion heists and even mini-campaigns (campaign support was only added very recently, so at the moment, you have to play the campaign missions separately). Some missions I would recommend to people who would like to get a taste of the mod (after the training mission) are:

Alberic's Curse: Haunted Builder church, looks great.

The Chalice of Kings: Small, polished mansion mission.

Fiasco at Fauchard Street: A smaller city mission (mine; so sue me!)

No Honor Among Thieves: A three-part campaign featuring infiltration, city exploration and wilderness action.

Isn't Doom3 old and outdated?

It is not the most modern engine out there, but it can handle a lot of polygons and has real-time lighting, which many others don't. On the upside, if you have a decent PC, you can run most missions at a fairly high performance, and the advanced shaders since v1.03 have really improved the looks of it. You can also play TDM on a Linux install and as of v1.06, even MacOSX. Here are a few screenshots:

How to get it?

You will need a copy of Doom3 to play. Then, head over to http://www.thedarkmod.com/ and follow the instructions to get the download app. It will download the package you will need. You may also want to visit the Wiki, which has a FAQ, a beginners' guide, a list of available fan missions and a lot of information for people who'd like to get into editing. If you experience problems, there are people on the forums who can help.

What if I'd like to make my own missions?

TDM uses a thoroughly reworked version of Radiant. I am unfamiliar with the original versions, but it it an effective, versatile toolset that makes it very easy for beginners to start building decent-looking missions (there is a good newbie tutorial here, and I also documented the making of a fairly simple map here). Of course, editing always involves work and dedication, but I have seen people go from zero experience to very nice work within a single year. And unlike a lot of modern engines, you don't need to learn modelling to build custom terrain - a lot can be accomplished with the basic building blocks.

So, again, check it out.

Come the time of peril, did the ground gape, and did the dead rest unquiet 'gainst us. Our bands of iron and hammers of stone prevailed not, and some did doubt the Builder's plan. Melan it's funny you mention that thread at somethingawful, I was looking at my videos on youtube and followed the statistics to that very thread, when I saw your post about TheDarkMod and here you are talking about said post lol, what a weird circle I just went through.

tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
